Bill Simmons will leave ESPN

BIll SImmons to leave ESPN, according to ESPN president John Skipper. "We weren't going to get to the terms," said Skipper.
i know the hate for BS is strong here but it's interesting regardless.
I used to enjoy his writing during his early days at ESPN, felt like he got too full of himself over the past few years.
I just hope he doesn't try to join TNT and mess with EJ/Kenny/Charles. Last thing we need is him in addition to shaq.
Wouldn't be surprised to see him wind up at Bleacher Report or Gawker though.

I remember when I use to await every post . The guy got me into the wire and I loved his writing during the red sox great comeback agai st the yankees.
I just hope that the Grantland podcasts continue along with the BS Report. It would suck if some people leave with him and some don't.
he is one of the reasons that got me back in to the NBA, he seems genuinely excited for basketball and i think he's charming in a way. i do enjoy parts of his writing and love his Pods with Lowe. Lowe is obviously more knowledgeable but their dynamic makes him shine.
By reilo Go To PostThat's pretty big. What's gonna happen to Grantland?ESPN-owned. Nothing will happen. Grantland stands on its own without Simmons.
Plus Jalen and Jacoby take care of the podcast anyway.
I hear he's buying SLAENT.
I'm excited anyway. Simmons is a whistleblower, I hope he stands on his own, that's what his fans want anyway, not for him to go from ESPN to Fox.
Also, I truly doubt he leaves on his own.
I know I will not give any credit to Jalen any time he says he keeps it "100" if he stays with these corporate fucks.

Lots of internet trolls are focusing the little bit they pitch in on whether or not Simmons is likeable.
That's not the issue at all.
The reason why this happens is because ESPN is selling products. Simmons meant to entertain while speaking his mind, writing truthful op-eds. You can't shit on Goodell if you want him to get you billions of dollars.
Simmons is a fan with a loud microphone. He wanted to stay a fan, no matter how high up the ladder he got. I truly appreciate that. I hope he starts his own thing with his people. His publisher is following him already.

I don't think Zach Lowe or the Grantland crew will follow him. I think he will have to find new talent if be builds another site.
Sounds like they didn't even negotiate anything and they just didn't want to bring him back.
Someone on GAF posted a link to a deadspin article about the launch of Whitlock's website. Makes you wonder how bad Simmons could possibly be if they are willing to deal with the craziness that they outline there.

Bill Simmons getting *****_'d. Jason Whitlock getting a bigger platform to be a clown.
What kind of world is this?

Agreed. Simmons tried to maintain his journalistic integrity while working for a corporation. Meanwhile, Jason Whitlock is about to become Skip Bayless 2.0.

Balls deep.
I didn't know "testicular fortitude" was coined in the WWF. I thought that was an old saying that I just picked up. LOL!!!

Last night's Grantland Basketball show had smaller audience than its lead-in (SC) and lead-out (repeat of Shaq & Dale doc)
lol
By pilonv1 Go To PostlolI don't really like any of Grantland's video coverage. Its always awkward and forced. I'd rather just listen to regular podcast rather than have Jalen yell his catch phrases over clips.

Grantland was ESPN caving in, and giving Simmons what he wanted. He created that team, most/all of the staff were recruited BY Simmons and leaving jobs because of the freedom he promised, and to be able to write how they wanted.
I don't see ESPN keeping Grantland at all, and I don't see many of the staff staying there either. They were there for Simmons, not for ESPN.
Because that crew likes the ESPN paycheck and don't seek to poke the bear. If, for instance, Lowe becomes the head of Grantland then this a career move for him.
Some writers might stay some writers might go. The amount of either depends on if Simmons lands on his feet and hits the ground running

If, for instance, Lowe becomes the head of Grantland then this a career move for him.I don't see Grantland standing on its own for very long though. ESPN were loathe to give it to Simmons. They much prefer to keep it "on brand" and with in the espn.com sites.
And yeah, ESPN is a big company where they would have guaranteed income. I can only imagine it won't be hard for Simmons to get a few investors to back him on a new site though. Particularly are he won't have to send all his video footage to ESPN now. It can basically all reside within his site.
Not a good sign that he didn't release a BS Report or Bill Don't Lie today.
I need my playoff podcasts :(

Really missing his NBA podcasts. Seems like he's not allowed to post on anything until september or his contract is bought out.

Yeah. I had just started listening to his podcasts this season and they were all really good along with the basketball hour. Shame to lose all those shows now. loved listening to them. Does this mean Jalen and Jacoby is over too? :(
