Southgates tactics and subs have been baffling. Starting with two defensive minded midfielders automatically means you're starving your forwards of quick, incisive passes. Neither Rice or Philips are comfortable enough in the ball to build attacks from deep.
Then deciding to just sub out your forwards rather than actually tackling the problem of having two non creative central midfielders on the pitch just means you have the same problem of no creativity, but with different players.
Then there's leaving Sterling on when he's contributed fuck all the entire game. And subbing off your best player in Kane, whose been starved of good passes all game due to the aforementioned double pivot, for a player who is far better as a wide forward than as a central striker. And still giving your sub striker the same problem of having no service.
