If you are familiar with what a debit card is (as opposed to a credit card), it is the paper version of that.

e: when you write a check, there is a carbon copy right behind it so that you have a copy. This is useful when balancing the checkbook as it gives you a record of purchases. There is also a page in the back of the book that looks like a spreadsheet and is used to keep track of all purchases and deposits so that everything is in one spot, making it easier to spot check. That has to be done manually and is prone to error since you basically have to duplicate the information in the carbon copy.
