I think you are somewhat right. I started watching Chelsea when Grønkjær was there, I loved him. So it was some years before Roman. But even then, I didnt really care about how success came later on, as I have no real ties to Chelsea other than liking a player.
Copenhagen though... I absolutely hate the guy who now owns the majority of the club now, even if he is giving us more than possible before, to compete with other Danish clubs with sugar daddies. I spent my formative years living close to the stadium, and feel a way stronger connection to the club than any foreign team I follow loosely. Copenhagen doing badly ruins my week. Chelsea doing badly annoys me just the 90 min I am watching them.
As the spokesperson of all other football fans i'd like to let the fans of the fake oil clubs know that nobody is jealous or envious of their clubs nor is it sour grapes. If anything, it’s almost the opposite: they’re annoyed (or even repulsed) that the success was purchased, not ‘earned’ - a sentiment that goes well beyond football. Everyone loves to moralize about getting money out of football (even as they probably desire more money to be competitive in football as it currently is).
That you think they’re envious of the money itself, though, is telling: it’s almost like, because your club’s success arrived as a direct result of monetary injections, you can’t imagine people who’d want a different route to success. But I’d be willing to bet far more people are envious of institutions like Bayern Munich than they are of Chelsea and Man City - at least among people who have some more defined connection to their club than having seen running shirts with famous names on the back tossing a metal dish in the air.

My point is it isn't necessarily the money they are envious of but having a good owner who genuinely seems to like the club and wants it to succeed. Abramovich is deeply involved at all levels of the club (for better or for worse...) and in the age of disinterested billionaires using football clubs as vehicles of profit, I think his approach is genuinely refreshing.
