By blackace Go To PostActually… the bombings of Tokyo are horrific and get overshadowed by the atomic bombs but were easily as bad if not worst.Ah, yes. "Strategic bombing". The atomic bombs really stole its thunder.
The histography is quite interesting. It wasn't until the '60s that the bombings of German cities started to get attention. See Slaughterhouse Five for example. Vonnegut was driven to tell his story because the destruction of Dresden (and all the other cities) was not known. In the postwar years it was a mix of Allied propaganda, they were the baddies so who cares, and it couldn't compare with the scale of destruction of the Holocaust. There was no space for sympathy for the axis powers, the aggressors. It was no one other than David Irving (the famous Holocaust denialist) who first published a book on the allied bombing campaigns. His casualty figures have since than been adjusted.
Japan is even more distant. Eurocentrism prevails and people just don't have a clue. I bet most won't even be able to name that other city besides Hiroshima. I remember quite clearly asking my history teacher when I was about 13 or 14 "why didn't they nuke Tokyo?"
Because they had already burnt it to the ground in the largest firebombing in history.
All for naught, strategic bombings didn't work.
And the most fun thing about history is that the allies would up the bombing campaigns even further in Korea. More bombs were dropped on Korea than in the entire Pacific Theatre in WW2. Destroying every medium to large city. Hydroelectric dams were targeted, causing mass floods. The US Air Force eventually ran out of targets, it was that bad.
All for naught.
Then the Vietnam War rolls around. Cambodia
Laos.
All for naught. Henry Kissinger you piece of shit.
the bombing of Tokyo is probably still the single most destructive single air attack in human history
Germany defending its home turf in particular feels like a Blindspot for me because so much US History summarizes the European war. "D-Day is when US saved the continent and not too long after Hitler killed himself LUL"
I didn't even learn about Italy campaign until last year really. Soft underbelly btw

Greece is even more fun to read about. It's when Churchill and the like determined that the Greek are actually white as opposed to the brown Muslims surrounding it. A real bulwark of Western civilization. Orientalism 👍🏻

I’m reading a book about Korea and the South Korean dictator in the 60s and 70s Park Chung Hee was assassinated at the presidential compound by his security chief and the head of the Korean CIA. Dude just iced him and some others after some disagreement at dinner. Still unknown if it was a coup attempt or guy was just annoyed and did it in a random act of passion, or some other motive.
I knew prior to reading that he was assassinated but reading about how it happened is wild. Spy movie stuff

I am very curious how involved the CIA was in this

It’s basically a survey course in the form of a book so it moves relatively quickly. Well recommended though. I’m not particularly knowledgeable on the two Koreas so this is a great introduction for me.

No concrete evidence that the CIA were involved, but they didn’t want Park to develop nukes.
I believe in the theory that Park was just collateral damage. Was a crime of passion against Cha, the head bodyguard/advisor, at that moment after arguments at dinner, but Cha was living on borrowed time anyway.
Park was a cunt, just like his daughter who ended up in prison as president after being bribed by Samsung in the mid 2010s.
Don't really know much about the history of the region, but interesting video at least in terms of logistics and what's being built around Taiwan
