So Dy and I have been kicking around an idea for a history thread just to discuss, share and learn new historical facts and whatever for a few years now. There was a recent post in Poli that I felt would make the perfect kick off post for a thread, so going to drop in here and see where the thread goes!
I got Japan in this debate and will list my reasons in a minute, do we have any other candidates to challenge the throne?

Good thread
Tough question in that tweet though, all 3 are very good shouts but I think I might lean towards japan...maybe.

Hey guys if you are interested if history podcasts I highly recommend Hardcore History by Dan Carlin and Revolutions by Mike Duncan. I would have went into a History major if there was any money in it. Was my highest IGCSE with a grade of A* in HS and I didn't even study for it photographic memory helped.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostThe nerd in me wants to question the "post colonial" part of certain nominees.I mean post colonial is an open question in general
By blackace Go To PostI mean post colonial is an open question in generalExactly, how it typically works these days is that the western powers (USA/EU) exert economic pressure via trade or financial sanctions and also define how the world should be. If you go against this you are hit with economic mechanisms that limit your country's ability to create economic activity. Some of the member here even spout the same cultural superiority shit without realising what they are doing.
I hope this thread has a king a fruitful future. I wish I cared more about history when I was young.
Probably better than classic colonization where they just jackbooted into your country, rounded anybody with a hint of resistance and tortured, raped, and kill men, women and children.
Couple of semesters back we critiqued a notorious article by an academic named Bruce Gilley who wrote a defense of colonialism and it was so bad the journal had to retract it and apologize. It’s an absolutely absurd read: https://www.nas.org/academic-questions/31/2/the_case_for_colonialism
By cashman Go To PostWhere do you guys think Dirk's 2011 playoffs ranks all time among post season runs in all sports?Probably not as high as you hoped for.

But to be real it is for a purely theoretical standpoint. Unfortunately life doesn't work that way because though everyone is supposed to born equal people don't start from the same level.
If this feels a bit off topic, stay with me here...
The amount of times I had to explain to people just because I am blond and blue eyed doesn't mean I would have been okay walking about in Nazi Germany because I am of Slavic descent is too many to count.
I bring that up because I feel like the intricacies and complexities of WWII and what predated it has been dumbed the fuck down and people have this very simplistic view of what actually went down.
Which leads me to another pet peeve: no, America today is not like Weimar Republic Germany.

Before world war 2 there was something called world war 1
Feel like it's talked about and taught at schools less but maybe that's just me

By FootbalIFan Go To PostBefore world war 2 there was something called world war 1That's easy. WWI is easily one of the unsexiest wars in recorded history. II had everything, an Axis of evil *wink, wink Russia is an ally*, huge military advancements in technology and tactics, iconic leaders that took center stage.
Feel like it's talked about and taught at schools less but maybe that's just me
I mean shoot, a legit tactic in WWI was having a lad rush forward and dive on razor-wire so his mates could climb over via his now mangled body. Hard to gussy that up. Then shortly after you got stuff like the blitzkrieg and proper air forces being born? No contest 😂
WW1 was super consequential in terms of long term impact. It was basically the end of old world Europe with the collapse of German, Hapsburg, Russian and Ottoman empires. Russian collapse led to the Russian revolution and communism finally taking over a state, and the Ottoman collapse led to the carving of the middle east which has created lasting problems to this day.

you can't even sell a WWI naval battle tbh
and odd times when mustard gas and yank w/ shotgun are both war crimes too

Yeah definitely and US domination post WW2 does play into perception as well. They really should be viewed as one big war that transitioned the world from one era to the other, but WWI will always be more interesting to me because it's not as black and white and was a bigger "fork in the road."

There's a podcast I follow which highlights a lot of conquerors and plenty of the horror they got up to.

My most recent history read was on the first Opium war. A very large amount of people died basically because there were almost no bilinguists, though it was still a fairly small war overall. Literally like a single brit battleship was enough to defeat the entire Chinese military.
I guess the colonial powers felt they didn't get to kill enough Chinese people, since 20 years later the second war was pretty much them deciding they wanted to fuck the country up.

I actually find WWI more interesting than WWII, but mostly the whole lead up and general angst and domino affect of monarchies crashing down around it. So many problems we still have even today stem from the fall of the Ottoman Empire but people busy talking about Nazis or Stalin.
By Perfect Blue Go To Post^ Shoutout to the Sykes-Picot Agreement for fucking up the Middle EastPreach. Also mans selling each other out to get there
Wars are kinda depressing and will naturally be the default of the thread lol
I did always find food history interesting, most of the popular dishes across the world were at one
time peasant / slave food.
Sushi is a prime example of this... Along with brisket , ribs, (butchers used to give away both) and lobsters.
Now them shits cost big money 😭

Going to share a couple videos on lesser known subjects of Indian history
The first is the Chola Dynasty of Southern India and their pseudo colonialization of the south east asia
The second is on Malik Ambar an African slave, who rose to become a defacto ruler of a Sultanate

I would like to know more about African history too, sorely lacking on that knowledge besides stuff here and there in modern times.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostI would like to know more about African history too, sorely lacking on that knowledge besides stuff here and there in modern times.Same, the history of that continent is sorely lacking and it is the cradle of life with the most diverse wildlife and human genetic diversity. I hate to blame Euros all the time but they really destroyed the history of the continent and supplanted it with theirs.

I hate to blame Euros all the time but they really destroyed the history of the continent and supplanted it with theirs. That's a good point. It doesn't help at all that the Eurocentrism of academia, academic writing, and even popular history, frame the history of Africa entirely around European conquest and colonization and its always written by Europeans or Americans.
Honestly found the most accessible way to engage with the continent is through its literature. Older writers like Chinua Achebe, Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, and then more modern ones like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I've gotten more insight into Africa from their works than any Eurocentric African history course at school.
Had a professor from Ethiopia who was awesome, though. Ethiopia wasn't colonized by Europe and the old Ethiopian empires were wild.
