Los Angeles (CNN) – The next "Star Wars" cast will include originals Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher reprising their 1977 roles.
"Star Wars: Episode VII" will pick up three decades after the "Return of the Jedi" episode's story with the same actors who played Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia, according to Disney, which bought Lucasfilm and its Star Wars film franchise two years ago.
Peter Meyhew will be in Chewbacca's Wookiee suit for a fifth film, while Anthony Daniels and Kenny Baker return as robots C-3PO and R2-D2 respectively, the Disney announcement said.
"We are so excited to finally share the cast of 'Star Wars: Episode VII,' " director J.J. Abrams said. "It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud."
New actors to the "Star Wars" franchise include John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow, the announcement said.
Composer John Williams, who has written scores for all six "Star Wars" films, will also create the music for the newest. The movie is scheduled to open around the world on December 18, 2015.

extended universeyall see how mad wookiepedia is about the culling of the EU lmao
so mad
EU?
being relegated to full noncanon, is its own setting under some "Legends" banner
the dudes that wrote thousands and thousands of words on this stuff are so mad
current wookiepedia quote of the day: "People who alter or destroy works of art and our cultural heritage for profit or as an exercise of power are barbarians [...]."
―George Lucas in 1988[src]

some guy going ham on disney:
I grew up in the Star Wars EU. I spent 20+ years immersed in it, knowing the how and why to everything that made up Star Wars. It was mine. SW knowledge was my (admittedly lame) super power. And now it's gone. I don't know anything more than anybody else who has seen the movies and it feels like… I don't know. Feels like I imagine a Jedi Master would feel if his connection to the Force just disappeared one day.
It makes me regret the absurd amount of time I spent living in a universe that wasn't my own. I used it as an escape and I shouldn't have. Up until today, I still did. And I shouldn't. I'm 27 years old and I know more about the history of Coruscant than the history of Earth. Or I did, anyway. It's time.
I will see the new movies, passively. When I have time. Maybe I will like them. Maybe my kids will. I always imagined I would be heartbroken if my kids didn't like Star Wars, but right now, in this moment… It just doesn't seem important in the least.
This used to be my universe.
Now it's Disney's "legend".
I can't help but think of all the useful things I could have been reading, could have been passionate about as a child, teen, and adult.
Is it time wasted? Is there a lesson to learn in all of this?
It doesn't matter. I think I'm done here. Those of you hanging on for the next chapter, enjoy the ride. I'm sure it will be great.
The Force will be with you… Always*.
*unless Disney decides it isn't
lmao so bitter

I love Rian Johnson's work and Looper was fantastic.never seen looper.
i'll need to see this movie now.
Looper has some of the best first 30 mins in a movie. Brothers Bloom is a fantastic film. In fact if you haven't seen Brothers Bloom or Brick check those out. This is the best news to come out of Star Wars. Well that and the set pics that will leak soon that are going to have people pissed.
just saw Looper.
pretty damn good movie. not blade runner great but better than any scifi flick in recent memory.
i understand now why they chose Rian Johnson, his directing, framing and cutting (if applicable) are very solid and he knows how to convey a scene very well. pace and tempo are traditionally good too. there's nothing avant garde about the way he directs, but that's a good thing. he takes a page from 70's and 80's pacing and framing without being too aggressive about adding his own fingerprints to it. Maybe that's why they chose this guy. he'll faithfully reproduce that 70's/80s scifi film that the original star wars fans demand.

By viakadoupdated the OP with the trailer.I had the new trailer on an endless loop for like 2 hours this morning. I'm so excited.
Film stock never looked so good.
By creepingfearVikado, that "international trailer" is fan made bro. lollmao. are you serious?
wow, that flew over my head
big ole derp on my part.
Looks good.
Fanboys gonna bitch about the weird lightsaber for some reason and ultimately be disappointed when the movie turns out to be exactly what we expect from JJ abrams: a fun two hours of splosions, some stuff about the force, decent acting, good action set pieces, and a compelling story that makes no sense.
The JJ hate will cause the fanboys to look inside themselves and realize that they were self loathing manchildren all along and that the star wars mythology has always kind of sucked.

I like the practical effects and the aesthetic.
But that lightsaber is dumb as fuck. Was it Michael Bay's idea?

That's exactly what Star Wars is about and the type of movie going experience it popularized. It won't stop the man children though.
I liked JJ's Star Trek.
That lightsaber is still stupid as hell. I think they stole the design from the margins of some second grader's math noteboook.

My real question is, why the need to re-write it though?
I mean. there was a TON of super good story and stuff there already.
The first time I watched the trailer, I didn't really love it.
Then I watched it 10 more times and I'm finally hyped. Really excited.

Good, Lucas is a terrible filmmaker and storyteller.
George Lucas says Disney 'didn't want to do' his version of 'Star Wars: Episode VII'
More than two years after he sold his empire (and his rebels!) to Disney, George Lucas is enjoying his retirement from making Star Wars movies—not to mention his retirement from people getting angry at him for making Star Wars movies.http://www.cinemablend.com/new/How-George-Lucas-Star-Wars-7-Ideas-Were-Used-By-Disney-69271.html

So when CinemaBlend reporter Nick Romano asked Lucas about his contribution to the upcoming Star Wars: Episode VII—The Force Awakens, the filmmaker genially responded that Disney basically ignored Lucas’ ideas for the new trilogy. Lucas explains that he had sold his ideas for Episode VII to Disney, but “they came up to the decision that they didn’t really want to do those. So they made up their own.”
It’s not really clear if Lucas had a specific story in place for Episode VII, or just vaguely-defined notions like “Han and Leia’s children have lightsabers” or “this time it’s personal” or “Death Stars???” or “Z-wing.” Episode VII Kremlinologists will recall that Lucas had some interaction with Michael Arndt, the screenwriter who was writing Episode VII until he wasn’t writing Episode VII. Of course, Star Wars scholars will also recall that Lucas spent a couple decades variously claiming that he was definitely making a sequel trilogy and definitely not making a sequel trilogy.
So it’s all as clear as a summer day on Mimban, which is a swamp planet covered in clouds. You can see Lucas’s full statements in a video at CinemaBlend.

Stolen from that other forum. 26.99 is the girl's speeder.
I guess that confirms what I have heard all along about the girl being the main lead in the film while the two guys are her road dogs. Although Boyega's arc is really important to the direction of the story.

Recently, a source confirmed with Jason Ward over at Making Star Wars that Rae (Rey) is indeed Han and Leia’s daughter and that they too have a son, Kylo Ren, who’s said to be the main villain in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.”
