By Laboured Go To PostYeah David Chase has said as much.
Yeah he danced around it without like fully committing to it forever. But this was just a few weeks ago
Good podcast btw
That’s all conjecture n8, regarding what happens or not. And the message and themes don’t really seem to be about the world being fucked and you not being able to get what you want, it’s really about nature, the whole scorpion and the turtle thing.
Regarding breaking bad, the character going on a misguided redemption quest, only to let himself be corrupted to the core, losing sight of what matters and falling prey to twisted ideas of what it means to be successful in life? Of course there had to be some sort of redemption, however small it was, although different to what the character originally expected and also because the character isn’t introduced like a criminal, homicidal, sociopathic piece of trash that manipulates everybody to get what he wants. Tony never changed.
In sopranos the ending protects the character, and the part of the audience that still wants to see him succeed, something it didn’t do for basically any other character in the series. It’s also an ending that didn’t need 6 seasons to explore.
edit: But fair enough, this is a gut reaction so I'll let it sink and see if I change my mind.

Life keeps going, crrusher. Television has you conditioned to expect a neat and tidy bow for characters.
The editing to Don't Stop Believing is fantastic. Still to this day I feel a tinge of sadness and loss (for the show) any time it comes up.
I love an open ending, but one that commits to it. This feels like eat cake have cake. But I’ll come back to it in a week, I’m keeping an open mind.
Show don’t tell? As opposed to don’t show and tell in interviews? Doesn’t even corner potential writers coming in for another season, not that it would’ve been a good idea to do it but it would’ve been really easy wouldn’t it? You might’ve hated it but it wouldn’t have broken any rule, so easy it would’ve been to write it. The cynic would think somebody at HBO bartered for it. It’s a great season finale…
it commits to the ending it wants to tell, people still talking about it 15 yaers after it aired should tell you everything as to how effective it was
sopranos (like mad men for me) is a show that the ending tells you it was about the journey all along.
Only thing that would had made the ending better was if Tony would have made the announcement of how you go seasons earlier
putting this in tags just to be safe:
if tony dies, it's expected.
if tony lives, they're playing it safe.
ending the series by cutting to black in the middle of a scene makes it perfect for me.
wish i could've seen it without having the ending spoiled for me years in advance.
anyway, where to find some halal gabagool, lads.

That actually would’ve fixed everything for me.
By JesalR Go To PostI’m watching Sopranos for the first time, so I’d appreciate some spoiler tags
Enjoy nephew. How far are you into it?
This Soprano ending (which is indeed pretty much perfect) discussion reminds me of a buddy of mine who similarly can't stand not knowing / ambiguity / things left to one's imagination when it comes to shows and films.
He was a HUGE Lost fan. As the seasons went on and it became obvious the writers were more or less making stuff up as the show dragged on, I kept telling him not to expect answers, because there was no way they'd go around explaining all the random mystical bullshit that happened across 6 seasons. He held out hope until the very last episode and of course ...
To this day he goes into a state of near-rage every time somebody mentions the show.

Absolutely, cry me a river levels. A man and his family, happy in the moment. This is the image that is trapped forever. Fade to black, it can all end in a moment, yes. This isn’t romantic? Just because it’s tragic? Poor fellow bu u had to live knowing it was all going away, I was here to see a sociopathic cunt and his sociopathic cunt wife get exposed. I had no pitty for them, I have known charming trash like Tone, it’s lost on me. Tragedy is not seeing him dipping his new hole in tomatoe sauce. Gabagool motherfucker.
But hey it could’ve still have been a perfect ending if like blackace mentioned, it had been foretold by the man himself. Would’ve been brilliant really.

I only saw the last season of it but I watched it w/ 2 diehard fans Freshman year as it aired and it just seemed like the show disrespected their fans time in the end. OTOH there's no possible way to explain all that random ass shit in the show anyway lol

Soprano's shit (sorry Daz)
The point of that whole season (And even some seasons past) was all these made guys either die in a hit or end up in prison, Chase just didn't give us Tony's

The Wire's ending though. crushingly perfect. dookie T_T
I also think Breaking Bad and Mr. Robot's endings are perfect.
Edit: Cheers has a fucking fantastic ending scene as well.

Six Feet Under ending was great even though my wife showed it to me before I finished the show lol. Still hits.
Wish Battlestar Galactica had ended at that earlier point.
Utopia ending worked despite being premature.

TV endings typically fuck it up or run the show for a season or two too long and miss the boat on a good ending
Mr Robot

Why is that different than it being foretold by Bobby and explicitly referred to after his death?
By n8 dogg Go To PostWhy is that different than it being foretold by Bobby and explicitly referred to after his death?Because we knew it was the last season, if he has that conversation with Chris or whoever in s3 or 4, it would have been brilliant foreshadowing. I like the ending, but if they set it up earlier it would have been perfect imo.
