I think among the best is fair.
But there is one, of course. The king
but more seriously i think detective pikachu and super mario were better, although not great either.
By FortuneFaded Go To PostWhat are better video game adaptations than the last of us?I think it's more the implication that that's a high standard of TV, not just that it happens to be one of the better adaptions of a video game property.
By Willkiller Go To PostI think it's more the implication that that's a high standard of TV, not just that it happens to be one of the better adaptions of a video game property. It's high standard by every possible attempt at an objective review. High critics scores, high audience scores, high ratings, nominated/won lots of awards. They are all subjective but collectively a lot less subjective than the opinion of one bitter northerner. Is Sopranos not high standard because I didn't like it?

I fully believe it was so highly praised because it was an adaption of a game because I really didn't think it was particularly good outside of the 3rd episode which I thought was fantastic. I think it was a pretty decent TV show, but I think the really high praise is unwarranted.
All my personal opinion of course, be pretty boring though to have to type IMO in literally every post when I think the implication is pretty clear
Ramsay’s performance and Episode 3 pushed TLOU well beyond average imo. The plotting of the games isn’t what makes it great, but it has good characters and sensational gameplay. Taking that gameplay away meant they needed actors to do a lot of the heavy lifting, which Ramsay really does (Pascal is fine, but then Joel is less interesting by design).
I think if they’d stuck the landing better I’d feel more positive overall. Seven or eight good episodes and then a weak, abrupt ending.

Well, you see, It's based on a video game and by default can not be of a standard that discerning and sophisticated gentlemen of Slaent's screen-enjoyers prescribe.

I was very excited for the Fallout TV show based on the very first trailer Amazon released. It's my entry point to the "Fallout" series which is cool, all things considered.
TLoU was decent enough. Said it a few times now though: story of the first game really just isn't very interesting. If Part 2 wasn't a thing, there'd be no way it ever got picked up for TV imo.
I don't get this. Game adaptations have been very correctly mocked for being shit since forever. If it was mid people would have absolutely called it out as that and moved on. It is not just fans of the game who like it.
Series does genuinely have one of the great TV episodes of all time too. I honestly believe that. Nothing that comes after it is very good though.

Well yeah, but this is a clear cut above all of that stuff. It's HBO, stars the main man of the moment Pedro Pascal and has a serious budget behind it. I think the fact it's actually decent to good I think surprised a lot of people outside of fans of the video game and its reputation is somewhat inflated as a result. You said yourself, it was decent enough...and I agree.
But looking at the reception you'd think it belongs up there with the best of the best, it was nominated for 24 Emmys alone. But I can't think of a single outstanding element that they maintain across the entire season. Episode 3 is so far above the rest of it, if they maintained that level of quality for even another few episodes then fair enough...but they don't, a single other episode doesn't even come close.
I also think there's a segment of videogame fans that hold the adaptation to a higher standard than the videogame itself because they have themselves convinced that the videogame is a masterpiece.
This isn't unique to videogames adaptations, this happens to book adaptations as well. Terminally online videogame nerds just happen to be the most vocal about it.

I liked the episodes with David. And Left Behind was good too.
Pascal beating Culkin and Odenkirk out for the SAG was fucking insane though. Thank god order was restored at the Emmys.

Even now with TV series giving a lot more time, I can only imagine how different something like Foundation is in the TV show. A game adaptation shouldn't have that issue

X-Men 97 is way better than I expected it to be.
Too bad they fired the writer so next season probably won’t be anywhere near as good

Madelyne Pryor went from being Jean Grey to working for the UN as a different person who didn't exist 3 weeks ago 😂
I will say episode 5 was dope tho

Going to start Fallout. First episode is 75 minutes. The blurb on Amazon said that the show is based on one of the greatest video game series of all time. Now that it is a much more disputable.

One episode in to Fallout. Walton rocks. Ella Purnell is ENGLISH?!?!!. The actor for Maximus is giving me Johnathan Majors vibes, which is me being totally unfair to the actor, but that's where I'm at right now. Amazon spent the money and you see it on screen.
In episode 2 of Fallout I swear that there's a scene where Walton Goggins mimics a walk similar to that of Raylen Givens in Justified.
By reilo Go To PostAgree with BA though the pacing is like whatever the opposite of an anime arc isIt is weird, the Mojo episode, while super fun, felt like filler that we didn't need if they weren't going to bring back Longshot or Dazzler and did the Inferno arc (like one of the longest arcs in comic history) in an episode. Pushing the powerless Storm, and Nathan Summer arcs at neck break speeds. Kind feels like you could have tossed all of the shit and just started over over if you feel the need to speed push it.The show is super entertaining, but from a person who knows the source material, it feels oddly disjointed.

By RAThasReturned Go To PostX-Men '97 has to be the best thing Marvel has ever produced…got Disney+.
Episode 5 alone is better than anything with the MCU’s name on it
Can't say I was expecting this.

To me the worst thing about it seems to be that they have specifically designed episodes to have fade outs for ad breaks (lol).

By Laboured Go To PostTo me the worst thing about it seems to be that they have specifically designed episodes to have fade outs for ad breaks (lol). You could say the same thing about Shogun which I watch on the Hulu vertical of Disney+. There are no commercials for the built in ad-breaks of the show and each episode sans the pilot has been 60 minutes straight through.
I would think that Shogun is still airing on cable version of Hulu with commercial breaks, but with most of these shows we still have to consider licensing opportunities to other countries that may air them over the air with commercials that could be 1 minute or 4 minutes etc.
Twisted Metal had fade outs and I'm sure that Peacock would and could easily put that on one of their sister cables networks with commercials.
