Was his great tragedy being Logan Roy’s son? Would it have been better if he had been able to forge his own path?Spoilers ahead: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/30/arts/television/succession-jeremy-strong-kendall-roy.html
In a way, that’s all of the Roys’ tragedies, that they were born into this. Jesse and I created this memory of a moment where my father said, “It will be you one day, you’ll have the job that I have.” It is like a death sentence to give a 7-year-old that promise. It puts Kendall on this trajectory, never with a sense of having earned it himself.
These characters have all the trappings of power, but nothing in their lives or upbringing installed in them any sense of personal power. If anything, their father and mother took that away from them and left them feeling powerless, which explains this need for Kendall to overcompensate and try too hard and overshoot the mark. He needs this to happen for his life to be OK, or to make any sense. And I found it just unbearably excruciating, the way that it then goes. He’s lost his moral compass. He’s lost his integrity. He’s lost everything. My seven years of working on this have been the slow inexorable death of Kendall Roy.
I missed the HBO lists from earlier, but it really saddens me that Carnivale didn't appear in any. One of the best shows I've ever watched, even if essentially nothing happened in season 1.

How important was it for the waiter to come back up in the final episode, at perhaps the most pivotal moment of Kendall’s life?
It is the catalyst event for Kendall’s disquiet, and the way that the character is haunted. It’s always there; it’s always lurking beneath the surface. That moment in Season 3 in Italy, where Kendall shares that burden with his siblings, and they — within the parameters of their expressions of love — accept it with forgiveness and tolerance and compassion. That was such a meaningful moment in those three characters lives. To then be in denial of that, and everything that trust and sharing represented, is such a fundamental betrayal — particularly to Roman, who is perhaps wavering slightly in that moment. That’s what breaks the dam for him.
What was it like directing Sarah Snook during Shiv’s moment of realization that she can’t have it be Kendall? And why can’t she?
One of the things I love most about “Succession” is that what seems in the moment shocking and surprising is screamingly inevitable if you step back and perhaps watch the show a second time. That’s the case with Logan and Tom’s interaction at the end of Season 3, or Kendall’s press conference at the end of Season 2. As soon as I watch it a second time or consider it more — how the heck could Shiv ever really vote for her brother? You can track all four seasons, of course, but you can also track her through just this episode. Once Shiv learns about Matsson’s betrayal, she pivots incredibly quickly by necessity. It’s a survival mechanism. At that point, “What’s my least worst option?” Bam! There’s my new alliance with my siblings. And there’s an elation that comes with that, walking away from the responsibility of ambition.
But of course, that’s an illusion. Once they get back to New York, and the closer it comes to that moment where she has to raise her hand, Sarah knows instinctively to feel those layers — shedding those defenses, those delusions. When they’re in Logan’s office, she sees how Stewy and Kendall are a couple of cronies together, and she sees how sidelined she could be by that relationship. When Kendall puts his feet up on Logan’s desk, there’s that visceral appalled reaction we see from Sarah. As she walks down the hallway into the boardroom, in the moment we might interpret it as determination and focus. But on a second view, we might see it as doubt. As Kendall struts around the board meeting as if he owns the place, we cut to Shiv to see the erosion of that lie she is telling herself. By the time she actually has to raise her hand, it’s as impossible as it is for Roman in Season 1.

Also I discovered it's pronounced My-lodd and not My-load like I had it in my head but either way #MyLawd
Im sorry Kendal confided in them because he nearly commited suicide over it and they were fine with it. Not like it's been some kind if leech that's been sucking away at Shiv and Romans ever so moral hearts. This was a completely shitty move weaponise what has been the most vulnerable moment between them. So fuck yeah deny it if your going to weaponise it, like fuck is nothing off limits (I'm saying that a BIT tongue in cheek). If shiv had taken that stance the night before Id be so much more empathetic (for all the reasons stated) but that was the ultimate betrayal imo.

All of them are shitheads for various reasons but Shiv constantly anointing herself as smart and referencing what her dad would do irked me the most. Plus her treatment of Tom goes without saying. Roman had no redeeming human qualities, and Kendall was stuck between wanting to be a try-hard do-gooder and taking the reigns. Shiv just kept claiming she was a good person when she wasn't.
There's not much if any empathy for any of them given their run to the emotional bottom.

Been playing rank the acting performances or performances you enjoyed the most. There are so many good caricatures of city types man
1. Tom - fucking grew into his role so fucking well, I don't think hes a complex character but think he had a complex role to play and executed to a fucking t. some of the best one liners in the show
2. Logan - just felt his presence everytime he was on the screen, amazing at how he didn't even need to say much at times.
3. Gregg - this guy was pure comedy gold. His ascension and character arc was too good man.
4. Shiv - well played man, even with my dislike of her thought she was excellent.
Probably need to think who rounds out 5

Flight of the Conchords and Curb both up there too.
I think it’s Tom, too. I think Kendall is the flashy role because of the emotional depths he has to go to, and because Strong is so committed to the role. Some of the other characters are more one-note - Logan, Greg and Roman are painted in broader strokes (although Culkin is S4 MVP and does an incredible job of fleshing him out).
I honestly think what Macfadyen does with Tom is very, very special. It’s all performance, whereas there’s enough genuine similarities between Kendall and Strong’s intensity, Logan and Cox’s presence, etc. But every single line reading, every reaction to other actors, every exhalation that Macfadyen does is so interesting. It’s one of my favourite performances of all time.

Not sure quite how to encapsulate it all but Barry is a very dark comedy about a hitman who is always trying to find some meaning / redemption in his life and yet somehow constantly ends up killing increasing numbers of people.
It is just so well made / shot / acted / written / everything.
