Look Galadriel! Look Hobbits!" moments. Calling it now. You don't spend that much money and not go full spectacle over substance, especially with the textbook nature of the source material
I mean the first episode of Hot D does the exact same thing (history book, "Look Winter is Coming") but at least the new characters were kind of interesting if a retread

Only potential downfall of the show is that it's a pretty difficult screenplay given that the books they are based on are more of a historical record than a standard narrative. It's no wonder they tried to get back in good with George in order to deliver a decent script.
