Had a teacher like this once in a math class. Final was worth most of the of the grade and if you passed the final, you could pass the class with a D+. I got an 80, after failing the midterm pretty badly.
I got an F. Reason? My attendance was poor (I was a working student at the time, and attendance was not weighed in grading based on his syllabus). Failing that course prevented me from getting my diploma, even though I was over the 120 credit mark. My work life took off, and I was never able to go back to school. Even that class itself was a mistake my college made because they previously signed me up for another class that they said fulfilled my math requirement. Which was not true.
Btw: I saw a statement from this York U and they claimed to have taken action against their prof.

Couldn't you have brought the issue to higher ups? We take the syllabus seriously and we aren't allowed to change midway through the course, unless it is to the benefit of a student's score.
