By Perfect Blue Go To Post1. I think the model could absolutely be applied to individual cities where the people actually live. Logistically it would be easier too because no major city in the west has Singapore’s population density and so we have a lot more land to work with. This could potentially open up different kinds of housing like duplexes, low-rise walk ups etc. rather than just the high rise buildings of Singapore’s HDBs or to a lesser extent, the Hong Kong public housing projects that began in the 50’s (which also happened in an extremely low-tax, surplus budget environment so it is possible to do all this on a relatively shoe string budget).I certainly agree that greater localism could produce good housing outcomes for cities, but one issue here is that there simply isn't that kind of governmental infrastructure in the West. The US does have some examples of cities that basically went it alone, but most will butt up against state or federal government, and outside of America most governments are much more centralized, which means you would first have to overcome all these barriers to local government before you could even address local housing. This does also affect your point 2. In addition, even with the issue staring them in the face, governments can't seem to recognize the benefit of cheap and efficient housing, so I don't hold much hope personally.
2. I don’t think this is the right place to get into the weeds of the PAP, the myth of LKY, and the pros and/or cons of performance legitimacy politics and competitive authoritarian regimes. I’ll just say they recognized early on the importance of housing large amounts of people and did that cheaply and efficiently. To think we can’t do the same is just silly to me.
3. Plenty of HDBs are gorgeous looking. Just take a quick Google search. I also don’t really care about the aesthetics as much but I guess this would tie into my first point of there being a wider option of housing where we have more space to build. A place to live is a place to live.
I did do a fresh google for Singapore HDBs and was not impressed, but I do accept that Singapore faces extreme limits on what they can build. However, I'll again point to other government building projects around the world, the vast majority of which don't exactly inspire.
By reilo Go To PostThe free market isn't willing to take this on, so who else would do it??????????????????????????? Why do you think Section 8 even exists? As I have noted, I don't have any opposition to government housing and would welcome more council houses in the UK. But I'm not at all confident in the quality of government housing and would be vehemently opposed to high levels of government control of house building.

By Perfect Blue Go To PostMy favourite parking lots are the free ones that subsidize suburban car culture around a train station. Park and ride is horrendous. You see so many of them here in the Toronto area and they’re all used to funnel suburbanites downtown during the week days with the trains not even operating on the weekends. When I used to live in Long Island, the train was 1.5 miles away from where I lived. Suburbanites don't really understand the whole concept of public transportation.
Look at this shit. And this is one of the smaller ones! 💀
By reilo Go To PostShe went to France?I’m saying lmao was news to me too.
By reilo Go To PostShe went to France?even politco noted how french outlets didn't even bother covering her. even before the omelette du fromage cringe session
im always baffled at how completely unprepared she is when speaking on any current event too. came dangerously close to putting her foot in everyone's mouth regarding the russia tension
It's maddening. Her qualification questions were already large before she was picked but she's looking Quayle-tier not even a full year in
the white house is in a awkward spot because they keep giving her layups but she consistently blows them. immigration, education, etc - but with biden being down bad himself, there's not a lot of potential successful opportunities to be shared.
its a huge difference to trump/pence because often times Pence was the buffer for Trump. every other week it seemed like pence was doing damage control or securing votes in congress.

btw, the xi-biden meeting should be fukkery for the ages.
that's the problem with all this stuff. you can't run on trump is the antichrist then start looking for excuses when people ask you to be better. even hillary managed a "we're not heartlessly deporting everyone, we're doing everything we can to reunite people with their families - wherever they may be" and moved the hell on
don't put on the new day immigration policy tour then go to guatemala and tell them to fuck off lol. then a few months later stories leak about paying large sums to separated economic refugees? that is how you take a manageable problem set and make it aggressively worse.
in a few years it won't even be divisive anymore lmao

By Frustrated_me Go To PostFor real though, is there anything worse than Suburbanites?Only place here that those with lower income levels can afford a place of their own for a family. So I would say it depends on the situation. The suburbanites here are the born natives with generational families while the those who live in expensive apartments/condos are expats because they are either UHNW or work in the financial services industry which is dominated by expats.

With gentrification younger generations are coming in and pushing older poorer generations out of their homes into the suburb and away from economic prospect centers.

With gentrification younger generations are coming in and pushing older poorer generations out of their homes into the suburb and away from economic prospect centers.Yea I imagine it would be different given the cultural and ecological differences. People here prefer to live more inland away from the shoreline because of hurricanes and better rock foundation. So now all of the nice shoreline is dominated by million dollar developments and hotels which are notoriously hostile to people walking along the beach even though by law the beach isn't owned by anyone. Funnily enough because they built too close to the shoreline and cut down all of the trees and mangroves - which held the shoreline together - are now experiencing crazy beach erosion.
However as more foreign investment floods the market the price of land and construction costs has made affording a place (2br apt) which just 5 years ago was 250k(300USD) is now 420k(504USD) which is unaffordable to a majority of the population. This has in turn driven the native population further away from the economic centres making it a fucking hassle to get to. Traffic living out there is 2hr roundtrip every day and our island isn't even that big at 196 sqkm (76 sq mi).
It's sad because those same patterns are extremely familiar across the globe it seems like.
Supply problem though. Nah, developers and local governments are pricing people out because they are chasing profits.

The worst part is that it has a establishing effect on the entire society. What do those in power think is going to happen when people are finally fed up? It's not a good outcome.

By reilo Go To PostIt's sad because those same patterns are extremely familiar across the globe it seems like. The Cayman Islands, which I believe is Lunatic's home country, is really more of a demand problem, given that they have completely unrestricted foreign ownership. The islands build at a decent rate, adding around 1 new dwelling for every 2 new people over the past 20 years, but supply is going to be overwhelmed if demand is coming from worldwide. I suppose this is the government pricing people out due to their policies, but I'm not sure it's profit chasing given they have hardly any property taxes in the country, or much of any tax for that matter. It seems like the gov of the Cayman islands needs to make a decision on what a sustainable population and tourism level is for the population.

It was an unexpectedly raucous event. About 100 people packed a hearing in Manhattan’s West Village in the summer, eager to vent about an issue dividing neighborhoods across New York City.
The matter at hand: outdoor dining.
As city officials presented a plan to make it permanent, residents waved matching signs with slogans like “Outdoor Dining Is Home Invasion.” They loudly booed an official who called outdoor dining a huge success. When another official said New York’s sidewalks have become some of the best dining options in the world, the audience screamed, “Rats!”
“We’re just absolutely going out of our minds,” one resident said, to a roaring applause, “with the emotional distress of every kind of quality-of-life issue you can imagine.”
In New York, the program has turned into a contentious battle over who should have ownership of streets and sidewalks. A group of residents sued the city last month, detailing 108 pages of complaints about outdoor dining. Neighbors have confronted restaurant owners and flooded 311 with calls.https://www.nytimes.com/2021/11/16/nyregion/outdoor-dining-near-me-nyc.html
NIMBYism has come for outdoor dining in New fucking York
Something is rotten with Americans, man 😂 They want to take ownership of public streets now because they live in the neighborhood.
By reilo Go To PostLunatic if you wanna slap him up all the admins are looking the other way for your next postI'm on vacation today dawg I saw it and just said nah not worth my last day off😂
Yes. There's a woman in the article complaining she saw a rat in NYC for the first time in 15 years, which like, you live in NYC and you went 15 years without seeing a rat? That's a hell of a winning streak and probably nothing to do with outdoor dining.
Glad I took the time to write out my thoughts this morning then
also reilo I'm not even sure why you keep making snarky posts when the only point that we actually seem to disagree on is whether house building should be done as a public utility or provided by private house builders

If you live in Manhattan/Harlem I’m not sure why you need a car anyway. There’s a bus or train on every corner. You could save money on car payments/insurance/gas

Do you not see how incredibly insulting that is when people are trying to discuss how housing becoming unaffordable affects poor people?

And I responded to you when you brought up supply problems. I don't see that anything of what I posted - as you say, common knowledge and quick googled stats - countered any of lunatics personal reflections and experience on the ground. I certainly didn't intend to insult anyone and I apologize if lunatic felt that it was targeted.
