Deviant.
My uncle knew guys that sold illegal cable boxes. He had one in all the rooms. My cousin and I would play N64 games and then watch a few mins of Spice or Playboy. Then switch to HBO and watch Ninja Turtles 2. Good shit. 90s were the best

Don’t think it’s a bad idea; Latin very important and useful for vocabulary awareness, development and acquisition, and it’s also potentially an avenue to explore the origins of Western culture (as well as colonialism and Western imperialism) if done right.
The issue is finding and retaining Latin teachers, the fact that this is still going to be selective, the fact that it’s being used as a key initiative when Williamson has a plethora of more important things to be focusing on that he seems fuck all interested in.

What are the benefits of studying a dead language over learning a different Romance language with let's say 200-500 million speakers?
Studying antiquity is cool and all but if your takeaway is that it gives you insight in European history, culture, and politics, then maybe modern history would be more relevant?

Well, students in this country already have to learn a compulsory Romance until they’re 16. I can’t imagine this is at the expense of that; what it will be is at the expense of arts.

Well from Williamson’s perspective it’s probably to introduce more rigour, some Western Classicist education, to reestablish some elitism in British education - and all those reasons aren’t very good ones.
I don’t think compulsory Latin teaching is a bad thing whatsoever provided it is done well and scaffolds and facilitates vocabulary acquisition across other subjects.
The bad thing is if it’s done poorly by unqualified teachers without curriculum synchronisation and comes at the expense of arts subjects. Which this will most likely be.
I was taught Latin and at the end of the day there are more important classes which would garner the same result and more. Improve upon the existing History, Literature, Romance languages, and Art classes and they'd provide a much broader and useful level of education.
But Latin does sound posh.

I agree on all of these - I think the primary reason for teaching Latin would be etymology and word consciousness, but there’s a way of integrating that into other subjects provided you have the time to do so.
Here you take two semesters of Greek and Latin Etymologies in high school. Teaching straight up Latin seems a bit much.

In one of my english classes in HS the teacher taught greek and latin roots specifically. Made Vocab parts of the SATs that much easier.
