That’s not exactly what I’m saying. And to be clear this isn’t some stealth commentary against representation in comic book films.
The question is more about if there’s any acceptable way in which you could criticise how it might have impacted the film, given that the studio is trying to do something positive

By DY_nasty Go To Postinstead of new takes on characters, make new characters is generally the answerE-fucking-xactly! Studios just being lazy as fuck. There is a ton of untouched lore in our biggest continent Africa.
By DY_nasty Go To Postinstead of new takes on characters, make new characters is generally the answerToday's audience doesn't want new characters. Disney doesn't generally, either.
like how hard was it to make john wick a thing? lol
its not that hard. people just lose it for marvel from every perspective

I’m trying to imagine how you would review the film if, let’s say, the fight scenes weren’t as action heavy as you wanted. Would it be acceptable criticise the film on that basis? I genuinely don’t know the right answer.
Maybe there isn’t one. I’m leaning towards it being acceptable to hold that opinion as long as you don’t attribute the lack of action to the character’s disability. But even then it doesn’t really feel right to have expectations beyond what might be possible for the character in this instance.

By data Go To Posthow much do you think the pitch for John Wick involved the word, 'Neo' thoughdoes it matter? can't run with bad neo idea for a spin off - make your own. marvel's been ripping ideas and mashing characters together for decades too. i promise this isn't a wheel being reinvented
By DY_nasty Go To Postlike how hard was it to make john wick a thing? lolJohn Wick is niche af
By reilo Go To PostJohn Wick is niche afthe money aint so like.....
edit: lol john wick 3 pulled 300+ mil and it was mid as fuck
This is so awkward. Every time the winner makes the speech, they cycle through all the nominees listening to the speech.
This is less about films I think and more situations where, as good as your intentions might be, it’s hard to see what can be considered acceptable
By Zabojnik Go To PostMarvel could potentially end racism.
david cage already did that, sorry

Don't get me wrong, John Wick is a huge success story but it's that way because it's a low-budget affair. These big studios don't fuck with news IPs because why spend time doing that when you can just attempt to reboot Terminator again?
By reilo Go To PostSo did Knives OutYea I get that but after all the platitudes about diversity it's pathetic that all they want to do is just change the race of the hero.

By Lunatic Go To PostYea I get that but after all the platitudes about diversity it's pathetic that all they want to do is just change the race of the hero.Think a lot more needs to be done WRT diversity in who actually makes these films. Something like Soul about a black Jazz musician was still created by a bunch of white nerds, even the music was made by Trent Reznor, who is white af.
Then you got that Raya and the Last Dragon movie that's supposed to be about "Southeast Asian representation" but the entire voice cast is just Asian Americans who don't even come from Southeast Asia. And the premise is just dumb as hell "The film is set in a fantasy land called Kumandra, inspired by Southeast Asian cultures of Laos, Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines." How tf do you even manage to put all these wildly different cultures in one and make a coherent kind of thing? You'd never see Disney try and mix all of Western Europe into one film. Man, fuck Disney.

That's just how visual development works. You throw a ton of shit into a pot and make something out of it.

you'd never see Disney try and mix all of Western Europe into one film.I mean, in terms of setting, Tangled, Frozen, etc would fit that description.
By sy Go To PostI mean, in terms of setting, Tangled, Frozen, etc would fit that description.Frozen is essentially Norway and Tangled is... Germany, I think? They aren't all of Europe attempting to be shoehorned into a film with a visually cohesive design and culture. They take inspiration and design elements from one country. They could have picked one Southeast Asian country for Raya instead of thinking eight different countries with very different cultures and splicing them together counts as "representation".

Tangled is Germany/France
Frozen, Raya, and anything else that leans fantasy is always gonna be a melting pot of inspiration.
PB just dismissing my danish representation in a movie, where they even stole the whole story from a danish author. wow

Late to the Superman stuff but there are two black Supermen. Val-Zod and Calvin Ellis.
They could easily make either of them the hero of their own story the same way Sony did with Miles.
Also, I want racist to lose their shit when they introduce Val-Zod and the movie hints that he is in a relationship with Supergirl

Might be interesting if he hams it up ala Paddington 2. I'm a big DnD fan but I justst can't see the film being any good. Its core mechanics don't translate to the screen. Get Matt Mercer to narrate or something.
