By n8 dogg Go To PostI think BvS and Justice League barely broke even lolJustice League definitely lost money, around 60 to 50M$ is what it's been rumored. BvS made more than 100M$ in profit in the end, not amazing, but not terrible.
By reilo Go To PostI don't think like that. I don't give a shit. I'm totally down for a Zack Snyder Justice League cut because why the hell not? It just sometimes feels like there's a contingent of MCU fanboys that don't want this to exist – because what happens if it's actually good? *gasp*
Try to see it in the context of that last page, where there's a tweet with picture of Jared Leto as a comic book character dressed as Jesus Christ
By Bungie Go To PostTry to see it in the context of that last page, where there's a tweet with picture of Jared Leto as a comic book character dressed as Jesus ChristMaybe we're all just being trolled? Who cares. I think we all take cinema a bit too seriously at times especially when it comes to these high-budget action movies. I have my line (Dubai tower scene in Fast 7, bridge jumping scene to save Letty in Fast 6, the entirety of Fast 8, Martha scene in BvS, etc) where the movie just becomes too campy to enjoy it, but I'd rather someone just go balls-out than pretend they are making something serious and "Oscar-worthy". We need dumb sci-fi action movies like these, not everything needs to be Arrival.
At least nobody is pretending Snyder's work is high-art like the Russo's MCU movies.
Uh, there are more people pretending Snyder's work is high art than any of the Marvel movies by about a factor of 1000. WTF are you on about.
By inky Go To PostUh, there are more people pretending Snyder's work is high art than any of the Marvel movies by about a factor of 1000. WTF are you on about.Absolutely not. By Xpike Go To Postpeople are just hoping snyder will suddenly make the justice league good, which spoilers, it probably won'tGood? Unlikely but at least it will be more consistent. The Justice League we got is a fucking mess, the Vanity Fair article has a good section about Whedon's reshoots.
Whedon rewrote and reshot about three quarters of Justice League, from what Snyder can gather. When fans ask him about details of the movie that bears his name, he usually has no idea what they are talking about. Worst of all, for Warner Bros., Whedon didn’t exactly save the movie. “When we got to see what Joss actually did, it was stupefying,” says a studio executive, who requested anonymity. “The robber on the rooftop—so goofy and awful. The Russian family—so useless and pointless. Everyone knew it. It was so awkward because nobody wanted to admit what a piece of shit it was.”
(…)
After their private screening of the Whedon cut, Nolan and Deborah Snyder emerged into the light with a shared mission. “They came and they just said, ‘You can never see that movie,’” Zack Snyder says during lunch at his Pasadena office, a modernist series of cubes jutting from a hillside that overlooks the Rose Bowl.
“Because I knew it would break his heart,” his wife adds.
I really recommend the Vanity Fair article, it's probably the most detailed article that exists on the Snyder Cut and it touches on why this has been such a personal project for Snyder to finish this after his daughter's suicide.

The point was more that questioning why HBO would put money behind this doesn't mean you have skin in a comic book vs comic book game.
To the rest of what you said, I really don't think what streaming services need is more superhero content of any kind. I feel like I've seen every variant of these stories now, and that's without seeing half of them.

By reilo Go To PostLOL no wayI can do this too. People talk about Zack Snyder like he's Terrence Malik. No one talks about Marvel movies like that.

Maybe not the numbers you would be using if you were doing revenue forecasts.

We already know WW1984 did great for HBO Max and that was a bad movie by all accounts. People are gonna jump on to watch this for free.

The free bit aside, I would question whether this is going to drive new business vs retention
And isn't HBO Max only in the the US?
For every random tweet about the winter soldier there are a million Zack Snyder is kino takes as well.

But the hardest part about getting people to join a gym membership is to get their ass to the gym. Once they are there and are paying that monthly fee, you got them.

You guys are crazy and speaking out of both corners of your mouth. On the one hand, Russos et.al. are rent-a-directors that nobody knows (true), on the other hand, apparently people talk about them like they are Kubrick. Meanwhile:

Europe is 2H 2021 apparently
I'm not trying to disagree with everything you say, but we're at the point where these companies are asking people to consider signing up for multiple gym memberships at once. That first hurdle is huge and they don't offer any sort of trial from what I can tell. If Wonder Woman didn't draw you in, is a recut of an old film going to make the difference?
There's obviously a contingent of very loyal nerds online that will defend Snyder to death but the idea that Snyder is beloved by the general public AND majority of nerds in the way that MCU directors are is absurd.
I don't think you guys truly notice the difference in the reverence and scale between the two.

"The release of 'Wonder Woman 1984' helped drive our domestic HBO Max and HBO subscribers to more than 41 million, a full two years faster than our initial forecast,” says AT&T CEO John Stankey.COVID + same-day release of movies like WW1984 has them two years ahead of schedule in their subscriber goal
The final few weeks of 2020 proved invaluable for WarnerMedia's HBO Max. The streaming service, buoyed by an eight-months-in-the-making distribution deal with Roku and the Christmas Day release of Wonder Woman 1984, ended the year with 17.17 million activated users, twice as many as at the start of the fourth quarter, AT&T disclosed Wednesday.
When Martin was talking about living in a bubble, surely this is anyone who thinks the general public know who the Russo brothers are.
By reilo Go To PostI still laugh thinking WB allowed Whedon to get away with thisThey wanted him to do re-do the magic that he did on the Avengers movie and he gave them exactly that.
By Bungie Go To PostWhen Martin was talking about living in a bubble, surely this is anyone who thinks the general public know who the Russo brothers are.Netflix just gave them a $200mil budget to do a Bond-esque spy thriller starring Ana de Armas, Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans and they are producing a live-action Hercules for Disney.

I didn't say general public loves Snyder. I said more people militantly believe him and his movies are "high art" compared to the commentary around any single Marvel movie.
Which is true. Obviously fanboys will always seek validation for the thing they like.

By Bungie Go To PostMost people don't know them full stop. You seriously overestimate the general publicThat's not true at all -- maybe it's shifting now because of how Disney operates their productions nowadays but generally it's not true.
Christopher Nolan is a huge counterpoint to your argument.

For these big budget comic book films it's especially true
By inky Go To PostI know you are being cute, but people like them just made The Snyder Cut possible. That doesn't mean there's more of them -- just louder. And AT&T is just clearly smart to tap into the free marketing they got out of it.

While there are probably scores more Marvel fanboys out there due to the movies overall mass appeal, out of both groups, there are more who believe Zack Snyder is a high art auteur vs anyone who believes any no-name marvel director you can think of is. The fact that one contingent of overall fanboys is larger doesn't preclude this from being true. Most of them, on either camp, think of these movies as just popcorn blockbusters.
There are simply not more fanboys thinking that Russo's are high art filmmakers than Znyder ones, because like you always point out, no one even knows who Russos are. This whole shit goes back even to the Nolan days.
