I think I was 6 or 7 and walking home from the park when a shitty beige datsun drove by and two guys yelled "NIIIGGGGGEER!!!"
When I told my father, I got the talk.
Looking back on it, how much hate in heart do you need to see a literal baby walking down the street and furiously work that window crank so you can yell at them? š

By Old King Rob Go To PostI'm not black but I got stopped by the cops walking around the block to my friends house when I was like 8 because I was wearing red shirt and sweatpants. I grew up in a white ass neighborhood and I remember them asking me if I was in a gang and I didn't even know wtf a gang was at that point. I just wanted to play Goldeneye and swim in the pool with my friends.I didn't know you banged Piru

this happened to me freshman year of college and the dude was hanging so far out the window to yell it at me he damn near fell out the truck while the driver was pushing 60
Only time i've heard that called to me directly was in the Uno days of xbox live with the web cam. due was a legit neo nazi but luckily my buddy told me to put on some interracial porn and the guy got so pissed he left.

My sister and I got to go to a really expensive jewish summer camp cause my mom had a part-time job there, so we got to go since there was nobody to watch us. We were the only non white / non Jewish kids there, so you can imagine how that went. I still remember the "joke" to this day that this kid was telling, it was about a kid seeing a black man for the first time, saying "Mommy look, there's a monkey" and then the mom corrects him and says that's an ape. I didn't like it, told my father, and he told me I had permission to hit the kid the next time I saw him as long as nobody was looking. So I basically ended up bullying that kid for the rest of the summer.
On a positive note I was by far the best athlete at the camp though, always picked first for dodgeball, basketball, etc lol and I fucking sucked at basketball cause I didn't even really start playing till I was 10-11.

I think I may have been 6 or so when someone screamed "Paki" at me out of the window of a bus. Definitely didn't fully get what it meant, but it stuck with me enough that I guess I knew it was some shit?

Another one I can remember in 8th grade a math teacher got so fed up with us she started going one by one through our class and telling people to go over to the left side of the room or the right side and stand together. When she was finished she said āthe people on this side of the room are going somewhere in life. The people on that side of the room arenāt going anywhere if they keep up how they areā
Well the 2nd group was all black and Hispanic kids and the 1st was mostly the white kids with a few minorities mixed in. I was in the 2nd group because this was when I was a classroom nuisance for fun because Iād already learned everything she was teaching, years before at home.
Next day a ton of parents were up at the school early to get at her and she was told to go home and ācool offā the rest of the week.

My high school was 'fun' in that sense - mostly whites and neo-nazis stopping by with their cars to hand out leaflets to join their respectable organisation.
All good fun.

I want to add to the discussion and not detract/interrupt it, so if anyone tells me to delete my post for any or no reason, I will; no questions asked and no feelings hurt.

I know that I was racist in high school and most of college, even if I couldn't admit that to myself at the time. Mostly offensive jokes and language. Hell, I probably still am racist at times, but am always working on recognizing that behavior/thinking and correcting it earlier and quicker. It's something I try to be conscious of any time I am interacting with someone or doing something that could affect others.
Reading forums where minorities were more vocal about their experiences and seeing tech fail to account for bias over and over and over again really hammered home how this is going to be a lifetime process that I will never perfect.

i grew up in a pretty rough white working-class area, but there were a few black kids around so i didn't feel too out of place (i'm pakistani but i guess it felt close enough lol). my parents had a corner shop in the area (which comes with its own fucked up stories as you can imagine), but one funny memory i have is when i'd be in the shop, one of the local drunk women would come in and be super nice to me. then when i was out with my friends (who were mostly black) she'd be super angry while walking by and aggressively shouting the n-word, paki, etc at us lol.

Had the "Chinese, look at me" and slanted-eye thing in 2nd grade.
Punched the kid, he backed off, and never happened again.
Didn't even get in trouble at school either.
Southern California btw.
Also, still get the "where are you from" question at times.

Anyone have tattoos here? I got mine less than 2 weeks ago and I noticed one part the ink is very light and I can see red marks under the ink, scared that the ink didnāt stick and I may need to go back in to get it filled in and reworked.
I know everyone's different and it may seem like a dumb question.
But if you have a tattoo, why did you get one?
Is it just about self expression? Or is there more to it?

Definitely experienced racism, when I moved back to the UK my parents decided that eltham were Stephen Lawrence was murdered would be a good spot to live. Things like people driving by saying coooooooon in harmony with the sound of their moped engine. I've always been interested in them and liked them. Like I made all my characters in Tony Hawk have tattoos. I knew it was only a matter of time, I just waited til I felt like I had a decent appreciation of tattoos and art before I jumped in.

I quickly became friends with several artists at my shop. Started following artists on instagram and understanding all the different styles and how tattooing worked. I don't have many 'meaning' tattoos, it's more just like I like this artwork and its cool to have my friends incredible art on me. If my hands were less shaky and I had sy's talent, I'm sure that'd be my career. It pays well, but my girlfriend owns her own shop, and I've learned from dating her all the downsides. You never really go truly off the clock, there's so much to manage outside of tattooing and there's no benefits. Plus, once your back goes, you're basically done.
I just think shit's fucking cool though
spoke out in the past but being kinda sheltered coming from alaska i didn't really think racism was a thing despite my dad always ready to blow a gasket over anything perceived. we were leaving a kmart one day after buying a ton of stuff for our new house. my dad walked out the door first while i was pushing the cart right behind him.
security quietly stops me and pull me to the side with all of our purchases. dad didn't notice at all and kept walking to the parking lot. spent the next 10 minutes getting a finger in my chest, hassled, and threatened til my dad came back. dad handles it while im too angry to even think straight and when we finally get to the car he just says with zero sympathy "told ya so". i think that day is when i started to bottle in a lot of unhealthy shit in lol
a week into 4th grade i'll never forget my teacher putting me on the spot saying i was reading too fast. didn't fully understand how fucked up that was until much, much later in life
also got in a fight a few years later. guy was bullying me and the only way i knew i could beat his ass without getting jumped by all of his friends was to catch him on the bus. of course i told teachers and they either did nothing or validated what he said because obviously i must've been cheating in every class. so i said fuck it and did just that. first offense at this school and they were threatening to send me straight to juvy and secondary school lmao
literally earlier that same week a white kid brought a gun to school and another white guy started a fire in the stairwell. a black asst principle stepped in and kept me from getting railroaded. he eventually ended up as a dean at winston salem state uni - no telling how many kids he saved.

I told the story before, but they installed removable rims at the park in the white part of town cause we started playing there, then eventually just took the backboards down altogether. My neighborhood was over policed, always had cops around and it's not like I grew up in the South BX or anything, but where I lived was all black and almost everyone that was black in the town lived there. Cops would complain about us always being outside and doing nothing while actively taking away things that would keep us busy. They'd stop us if we were going to the other side of town that had parks, just trying to keep us in our small neighborhood so they could keep tabs on us.
These dickheads were so concerned with us, yet a bank not even half a mile from their station was robbed in broad day. This is in New York by the way, Westchester county which is right outside NYC. It's really segregated, almost every town/city has a clear black/hispanic and white sections. A lot of people swear NY is some melting pot and it's not, everybody just lives with their own for the most part.

Yeah NY has a lot of diversity but everyone is pretty much into their own communities.

One of my earliest memories of my father was him pulling a dude literally through the window of his car because he drove full speed at us and stopping mere feet from us instead of slowing to a stop... that was when I knew pops was built different.
The one time racism really happen to me in my circle was when we were playing football and a kid from a different neighborhood got bold and call me a half-breed because I was busting their ass.. we had to box but it really fucked with me that he was so specific about his insult.

Yea, my folks had a lot to learn, about a lot of things, but my mother always stepped in, when she could. She was the type that was ready to throw hands with white kids that were bugging, during integration, in her school years. But I have seen how the mixed kids get shat on here. My first job in a JHS there was a mixed black girl and from my first day kids were giving her shit, asking her if I was her father and all that. The teachers never stuck up for her and when she finally snapped and slapped a kid up, the teachers were like she doesn't understand how to be Japanese ā¹ļø

that's the classic though, can't defend yourself against them because they suddenly become the victim and fuck you. I've had the year head screaming at me for putting a lad through a bin for calling me a paki, with the "I DoN'T cArE wHaT hE CaLLeD yOu!" chat and being told to shut up when trying to explain it to her. I barely got into fights because I was a bit of a coward until people laid hands on me.
My younger brother was more pro-active about dealing with the shyte, though. he laid out a lad so bad, he didn't come back to school for a week. I had to get involved when his mates got the bottle to step in. Had one of them in a one armed headlock and was just smashing his face in with lefts. Dude went limp and the rest backed off.
Couple of teachers watching the whole thing happen, too. Welsh guy and a Sikh teacher. They knew and let it carry on lol. My bro had to go into a meeting with the Welsh guy, who had a load of witness reports about the fight. Dude was reading them off and then binning them, laughing at the bullshit being made up about the fight. "Between you and me, we know these lads are trash." Legend. Bro's math's teacher apparently watched the whole thing from his classroom and gave my bro 2 weeks with no homework as a reward.
It's remarkable the sheltered life I - and assume all whites - led and still lead. Respect to everyone here for sharing their stories.
We had anti-racism training at the start of the year at school and there's still one mid-40s white teacher in tears because she was poor and she has never been handed anything and she's married to a Mauritian so how dare someone say she has white privilege lol

I think being raised around minorities is probably the best way to have perspective of their struggles and actually empathize. If you don't, it's something that hardly ever will cross your mind. You can do it later in life, but it's not the same. You're very impressionable as a kid, if the people who you live around or spend most of your time with are dealing with bullshit and in pain because of it, you'll be a lot angrier about it than as a grown up.
That's just how I see things anyway.

Lucky enough to have grown up in South London and gone to school with loads of Black and Asian kids so of course my experience of that is normalised, but youthful naĆÆvetĆ© just led to me never recognising racism existed because, well, I had Black friends and I wasn't racist to them.
Met up with a mate I hadn't seen in nine years or something a few months back; he'd done time in prison for selling drugs, is out and has a few kids now. But he was just talking about the experience of handing in CVs to the supermarkets and shops that we all did, but not standing a chance or getting calls because of his name so he turned to dealing because it was a reliable income. I never had to face that choice, because I got call backs for jobs and it likely had at least something to do with my white-coded name.
