If I wanted to live purely on dividends -- not having to sell a single share of stock -- then it would take about 6 million invested, assuming a 2% annualized dividend yield, which is about the average over the S&P 500. Figuring that stock values would appreciate (and, further, far outpace inflation), and that qualified dividends are taxed at a lesser rate than normal income, I could probably start at a lower point and then eventually market value would again surpass the point where I didn't need to sell a single share. And in all reality, the starting point could be lesser still, since a sizable chuck of my income wouldn't be going into a 401k and other investments.
Once you start having to sell, that's when the hourglass begins.

Point is when you have that much sitting around you rarely touch it and live off dividends, property, loans etc. Your bank will love you and give you super low rates.
