By DY_nasty Go To PostYou don’t want that smoke. Not many people are making the 100K-200K like this video says. That takes a long time and you’ll blow your knees or back before then. Like this video mentions young people simply see tech or white collar jobs as the better way. My girlfriend’s sisters boyfriend is pathetically lacking with working with his hands. I wonder how a grown man gets by like that in life and I realize he’s a mommas boy all the way so I guess upbringing?
shiiiiit maybe this is the way
The trades can be viscous, white collar workers complain about drama at the work place, now imagine that while on your knees in the summer heat and loud enough noises that require you wear earplugs so you don’t damage your ears. We definitely need trades people, but people need to realize this isn’t dumb work where you hit a nail with a hammer all day. It requires exceptional hand and eye coordination, you’re not in a comfy office replying to emails all day. I didn’t even mention the toxic work environment....
there is nothing i hate more at work than replying to dumbass emails all day. like i'd honestly rather be shot at than deal with some crusty old ass cunt down the hallway that loves to speak in platitudes and 'per my last response's with a fake smile at 100
i genuinely miss actually working. and i can say with absolute certainty, there's less to be dramatic about when you're actively engaged in stuff
plus you don't go into absurd debt do half of this stuff either....

I've barely written any code to begin the year because it's been all planning and meetings and false-starts. There are days I legit miss being heads down until 7pm just by myself knocking out code without anyone pinging me on Zoom. I used to not go into the office just to avoid people so I can get work done but now that everyone is remote that line is gone lol.
Instead I am far more burnt out by 4:30pm because Zoom fatigue is real.
Worse yet, even if I have an hour between my 4-5 scheduled meetings for the day, that leaves no time to do "the work" -- because context switching like that is more exhausting to me than anything.

If interested I would seek out apprenticeships/union roles. Those people make bank and have a solid future. Just don’t go apply for MR. Rooter and expect sunshine and rainbows. 😂

There should be legislation to address this and sponsor apprenticeships for trades, or something like that.

"just get a law/accounting/cybersecurity/etc degree" then get blindsided. its a lot easier to be a journeyman technician than an intern at a large business. way easier
think the trade environment gets dismissed way too quick in general... but more than anything i miss the peace of actually doing work.

By DY_nasty Go To Postyes. we sit down and reinvent wheels at various intervals within our 90 day calendarBack in May we discussed doing this big feature for the mobile app, did all the scoping, planning, technical overview, etc. It got paused because we weren't "ready".
its mind-numbing.
Then we switched gears in the summer to redo the .com which sits on a platform we don't control and abhor that doesn't sit on-top of our own API/infrastructure, so long-term it's important to replace that so we can build out features, redo the experience, consolidate the customer database, etc. We did the scoping, planning, technical overview, etc. and even hired another engineer to take on that project full time. It got paused to go back to that aforementioned feature.
We went back into UX for said feature, then decided we wanted to have an outside agency do that, so it got paused until that was done. So we switched gears to another feature -- which hey, we actually accomplished by EOY (eventhough we discussed for this to be done in Spring when the pandemic hit!).
We hit roadblocks, and realize it's best to redo .com because it will help to implement our big feature better after all, so now we are in February pushing to March and neither project got started.
"this meeting is not about the upcoming schedule or anything like that :) - its about the organization. i want to ask an open question to everyone.... why do we teach?"
why the fuck did you hire me? "its really about the big picture.... i try to imagine myself as blah blah blah buzzword blah blah pieces of the puzzle"

I know that long-term for my career if I want to make the huge salary I would probably need to become an Engineering Manager, but I consider myself someone that "makes" things so that'll be a huge adjustment.
Emails are the worst because I’ll always be triple doubting myself if the email is perfect especially if it goes to outside the organization. Mad anxiety from submitting papers in school too.

Emails are tedious, but you don't have to sweat it. Just keep it short and professional, or better yet, use a template if the work allows. If you write in full sentences and with no typos, you are likely ahead of 99% of contacts out there.
Everyone in the department will be cool with you if you're not sending emails they don't need to read because you feel compelled to CC the whole office every fucking time, on every fucking email like either a dipshit or an asshole.
I noticed I was sending the same types of emails often so I just mad up fill-in-the-blank form emails for every situation that came up
Saved me hella time over the years.
