By Daz Go To PostPogba can do everything Bruno can and arguably more - the difference is Bruno is consistent and his secret ingredient is that he leaves it all on the pitch.
Players with technical ability are a dime a dozen.
You'd think players whose performances don't measure up to their technical ability were a huge rarity, the way people talk about Pogba. It happens, and everyone should have accepted it years ago.
Nobody is still waiting for Qaresma to fulfil his potential.

Probably not his and someone asked him to take a pic with it.
I have always felt people have just assumed Pogba is big and black, so should be a player like Vieira or Makelele. He is an attacking midfielder and when he helps out at the back he makes mistakes like you see from a lot of other attacking midfielders. The defensive side of his game is non great.
I am always said when United signed him that he was a luxury player. Someone you sign when you already have the backbone of the team. I haven’t watched a lot of United in 2020, but in previous years it was criminal how deep he was playing.

I agree that he is mischaracterised, and to an extent he has been let down by the club who did not surround him with requisite quality, but this is not an isolated incident. Someone with his talent should not down tools every time something bad happens. There is a reason he is not playing ahead of Bruno in his favoured position. There is a reason why he sits on the bench while McTominay and Fred play instead. And it’s because they put a shift in. He’s constantly jogging about, he cannot handle a high press, he gets roped into individual battles instead of playing the system. If he can only play one way and do one particular thing, then he has no claim to the entitlement he and his agent show.
Maybe he shouldn’t be playing a double pivot, but there’s plenty of examples of players who are playing shit but look like they’re bothered and don’t bitch to the press every five seconds. It’s irrelevant whether he’s an attacking midfielder or not. He doesn’t press like Bruno, he doesn’t create chance after chance like Bruno, he doesn’t have the iron will like Bruno. You’re right, he’s luxury. But you only have to look at someone like Ndombele or Papu Gomez to see how you can be what is nominally a ‘luxury player’ and still participate all the time, and that’s by not playing like you’re luxury and instead playing like you’re quality.

Tired of that bullshit also. While pulling an idea from Oliver Stone’s classic Any Given Sunday might seem to make sense, a quarterback turned into a wide receiver just because he’s black and fast, this isn’t what’s happening to Pogba at all.
He has been given plenty of chances to play with more defensive free duties, and it’s the same result. Unless the expectation here is that Pogba deserves some sort of special treatment and doesn’t need to create chances, press, run or score and has free reign to stop the game just so he can do some shitty drible in midfield and make the game all about him and not about the team.
This is Manchester United, ain’t no way this big headed boy is bigger than the club. I’ve had enough of his ass and if he wasn’t such a brand he would’ve already been shipped off to Everton.

Pogba is not suited to the double pivot. He shouldn't be playing there. When he was at Juve he played high up the pitch on the left side of the midfield. He would track back and but a shift in, but it wasn't expected that he was going to be bombing up and down the pitch. He was able to carry the ball well and his interplay with Alex Sandro was fantastic that created so much space for the forwards to operate. I still feel United signed him without watching any of his Juve performances.
I do agree his current form from what i have seen is awful, and he clearly wants out. I just feel United signed him and never figured out a way to use him to the best of his ability. And he had a great season two years ago, but still seemed to be criticised all the time. Then gets injured, then gets corona, and now he just can't be bothered. I like the Gomez comparison, but Gomez is playing on a well coached team, and in his natural position. It is easier to buy in to doing extra work in those circumstances.
When Totti was a trequartista, he would jog and put in minimal shifts defensively. Just like Pogba. But I don't think he ever got criticised for it. People just seem to have had unrealistic expectations for Pogba, whcih his game was never about. Pogba is a lot closer to what Totti was than playing in the pivot.
i really like Pogba. I think on his day he makes any 11 in the world. Just time for a change. Was foolish of him to go back to United, and foolish of United to try sign him. Hopefully, he can rediscover his form at a different club. Would love him at Arsenal to link up with Saka on the left side.

By Willkiller Go To PostI think the club should have spent another 100-200M on the midfield to #unlock Pogba personally
Or they could have just played him in his natural role.
So when Pogba is seen playing on the left with Matic or Mctom staying behind, he’s not being given his Juventus role?
You gotta be kidding. Also look at where he plays in the national team....
These excuses are baloney.

I don't think having to fill slightly different roles at different times excuses the obvious lack of commitment and effort he's shown at various times during his second stint. His attitude is shit, that much is clear, and that has constantly bled into his performances.
It's excuse after excuse after excuse from people that, somehow, still respect him as a player...
Pogba's current form is excarbated by Covid, and/or his recent injuries. You could see how sluggish he was compared to before.
Also don't think the problem is him being played in a double pivot, or deeper. The issue is even when he's fit, he kept making mistakes you rarely see with midfielders in the EPL. He has been brash, reckless, and let us down especially in important games.
I also dont mind seeing him go for other reasons. He's 28, and this club is nowhere near winning the league or the CL. A footballers life as a pro is short, especially in top clubs, and if he wants to get some medals, moving is the best way to do it.

Here’s a fact, if Pogba was a rat face like Bruno with no swag and Instagram followers, nobody would go to bat for him.
And he’s 28, like flutter says. He suffers from little prince syndrome like Neymar does, no matter how old he gets people still look at him as a young kid.

Pretty clear that Pogba's been wanting away since at least 2018. Mourinho knew it and tried to force him out. That might have worked had he not already lost the dressing room.
I still think that in terms of technical ability he's the most gifted footballer in the squad. Put him into a team where he's interested and he'll be brilliant.

I think my biggest disappointment with him - not so much the football, but his larger than life personality that is projected in SM never translated to the pitch.
I've played with players who did that - on the pitch and when they come on - you can feel it. You raise your game.

pogba isn't a world class/elite player, but he certainly is a fantastic talent who is still 27 and has his best years ahead of him (unless, of course, being stuck at this level at united for so long has made him a lesser player).
i think sometimes people underestimate how difficult it is to play in a team that just doesn't play well at all.
he's not a tireless worker like bruno; for a player like that it's easier to look good in a team like united. pogba relies on other things.
not saying that pogba is without fault, but i do believe he'd benefit immensely from being in a good team.

I will go to bat for Pogba because i saw him get better and better every season at Juve, and then consistently be the best United player for three years(from what I saw) on absolutely dog shit teams. Then Jose comes along and picks fights with him and Pogba gets made out to be the bad guy, when he never really seemed to do anything wrong from what I saw. All this talk of him being rash, etc, comes in areas of the game that are not his strength. Tackling and defence awareness are not what he should be judged on. Yeah, he could be more consistent with putting in a shift, but when he does, he gets thrown under the bus for making a mistake. Much better to have been just like Ozil and put no shift in. Then at least they are only gonna kill you about one thing.
Yes, Pogba has been in more advanced roles with less defensive duties, and he has done well, but then the next time i have seen him, he is in another role. No chance to build chemiostry with the other players in that role.
I only ever thought his attitude was shit after Jose started picking fights with him. then he got injured and his performances suffered.
Again, I am not a United fan, so I don't watch as much games as the fans here, but I will always just feel that Pogba continues to get done dirty.

You very well know I defended Pogba a lot early on, but it's not only 'a mistake'. Multiple ones, across his time at United.
Some of them that's fairly inexcusable for any midfielder playing at the top level, let alone getting 300k per week.

Then you have been completely blinded by his time at Juventus, which was four years ago
I agree with a lot of what Shanks and Bud were saying. In lots of ways, we have let Pogba down by surrounding him with shit. And yes you’re right, he was probably our best player for a year or two and didn’t get enough credit for it. He will do better when he is at a club with better players and a better tactical plan
But the bare minimum he can do is not have his agent pop off like a fucking cunt every five minutes about how he wants to leave. It shows absolutely no respect for the fans, his teammates or his coach. I look at a player like KdB who can do literally everything that Pogba can, and I think ‘well why doesn’t Pogba put in the defensive shift he does? Why can’t Pogba motivate himself to do anything other than look for the Hollywood pass and stick his elbows out as wide as he can to look like he can roll challenges?’
It’s not a question of ability or incapability, because I think you absolutely can coach a player like Pogba to contribute defensively. It’s that he can’t be fucked and thinks the team should revolve around him when he shows no respect to that very same team.

You have been mismanaged at the top level for a long time now, no one would argue that. So in the sense of "United over the four years haven't got to the level Pogba would have wanted", then sure.
But he has consistantly throughout his second stint not even offered the bare minimum you can ask from any player, effort. He absolutely has showed flashes of the brilliance we all know he's capable, a few hot streaks but that's what they have always been. At no point has he dragged the United team through the rough patches, his poor performances have typically come at the exact same time. Coincidence?
If you took someone who knew nothing about football, let's call him....Oli. Explained the rules, player values etc etc and then showed him a season of United and told him there was a WC winning player on the pitch who cost 90 million, he wouldn't have picked out Pogba.

I think we have let him down to the extent that I imagine a lot of the conversation when we signed him would have revolved around building a title winning side. Then we signed Fred, Lindelof and Lee Grant.
Gini Wijnaldum was seen as a pretty rough signing by most, he helped drive his team towards a CL and PL
I think the global feelings on Fabinho were weaker than they were on Fred.
A title winning side isn't built just on names, that's most keenly shown by the fact Pogba was the biggest transfer in the league and rarely if ever boosted United's chances at a title

I guess my overaching point on that angle is that, if you as a player have consistantly been performing well below the standard you can perform at, you cannot make the claim to be let down regardless of what you were 'promised'.
If United promised Rashford in the last couple of years that they were going to build a title winning side, he could make a claim to be let down, because he puts the work in and has performed at or above the level expected of him.
Pogba has been given every chance at Man United & he's had long runs in multiple different positions to try & get the best out of him but the majority of the time he's just been inconsistent.
He failed as a 10 because he never could create enough, he drifts in & out of the game as an 8 & he's a liability as a dm because he loses the ball far too often, doesn't track runs & jogs around like it's a game down the local park.
Pogba very rarely if ever dictates games he's just a player who has the odd moment of brilliance then becomes anonymous for large parts of the match & when the team is struggling he's almost never the one to pull the team up & lead them to recovery.
As the years have gone by he's also become more injury prone & when you combine all of the above it's just not good enough for somebody who's supposed to be a world class elite player.
The notion that the problem is United 'are just shit' has been blown apart by Bruno Fernandes seamlessly coming along & becoming arguably the best player in the league in the space of just a few months.
P.s. Pogba is still better than Wijnaldum.
