Honestly the use of the pitchside monitor has just exposed how weak and incompetent many of the referees are and how they would rather double down on a wrong decision than be seen to disagree with another referee. They have to break this mindset of the on-pitch referee just confirming someone else's decision, the VAR is just another assistant to the referee, he is not the ref.
I've only seen one instance of a ref refusing to change their decision this season and it was the completely wrong decision (Brighton goal vs us at WHL) but at least he had the balls to make his own decision. I think the referees find it especially hard to dissent when a more prominent referee like Michael Oliver is the VAR.
