i hope it melts in year 2 so sony has to send me a new one that's not the size of the empire state building just like MS did back in the day.
Now I’m convinced there will be 3rd party outside panels, not necessarily to change the looks but to increase thermal performance. At the very least 3d printed projects.
Take the panels off and tape some dust filters over the intakes
Not going to look any worse let’s be honest
Not going to look any worse let’s be honest
I think one of the main problems is that with the PS5’s designed airflow, where the fan intake and output are on the large flat sides of the console, they need those panels to be able to place the console horizontally, as the panels are used to channel the airflow intake and output from and to the rear of the console, allowing it to be placed both ways without obstruction.
Problem is, that channelling has a cost in efficiency so that’s the trade-off. Basically it could have been designed way more efficiently (and without any silly panels) if they could mandate vertical placement, which is not gonna fly (especially at that size).
TL;DR - we vertical placers are suffering due to plebs.
In all fairness, adding angles to an airflow will always have a cost in its efficiency, so the big difference here is that by removing those panels, because it is possible to do so, we can at least see the difference when you just have a big ole fan sucking and blowing through the chassis in a straight line. So it’s hard to fully blame Sony as the same kind of scrutiny just can’t be done in other systems, in the end what will matter is overall performance.

-Series X slightly more stable 60fps when RT is enabled vs PS5
-PS5 more stable in 120fps mode.

I cannot believe we've actually allowed them to make 120 fps a thing
By Laboured Go To PostXSX better on RT mode.think they confirmed VRR is coming
PS5 better in 120 mode but both drop in places and PS5 doesn't have VRR.

Man, to hell with DF
At least they confirm what we've all known for months the series S is a side-grade mid gen console.

I was going to buy the Series S but they fucked up not giving it the One X's 360 enhancements and all that stuff.
By jts Go To PostNow I’m convinced there will be 3rd party outside panels, not necessarily to change the looks but to increase thermal performance. At the very least 3d printed projects.Honestly the panels aren’t a problem. The difference between on and off is small enough that I don’t think it’s worthwhile to spend more money or time on custom panels (unless it’s for an aesthetic change).
The main issue is just that GDDR6 hotspot. Personally I’d just run with it as is, if it dies, it dies. Get it replaced if it happens within the warranty period.
If it is such a big issue, then it’ll be a widespread problem and the warranty period will likely be extended by Sony and they’ll likely make a small revision to include adequate heatsinks for all GDDR6 chips.
I think the Series S is such a bad option and console. You pay the same for games and gamepass and get way worse performance out of them. It’s 100$/€ less than the PS5 DE but you also get nearly half of the usable storage space, so if you (very reasonably) take that into account, even if that’s only worth like 50$/€ it still reduces significantly the price gap, for a still huge gap in performance to real next-gen.
Maybe the price tag will be impulse purchase appealing to casuals in America (because casuals in Europe only see PS and maybe a bit of portable Nintendo, and Japan is not even funny anymore to discuss) but that’s about it and it impacts game development no matter how you slice it.
It is cute and small I give it that. Make a Series X slim like that in 2/3 years and we’ll talk.

the ps5 still having to the "copying" shit with patches is ridiculous. Takes longer to copy than download, especially since the wifi speeds aren't AoL status anymore.
suck my ass, ff
I play csgo on my 240hz.
and there is even 300hz monitors out there, for the truly enlightened gamer.

Judging Series S by comparing the graphics to Series X and PS5 is kind of missing the point
It’s a decent option for anyone that can’t or doesn’t want to spend big on a games console

You going to pay the difference for them?

I just did that thing where if you send a message to yourself with "www.google.com" it opens a browser on ps5

They also said game sizes might be smaller on the Series S, so it was noted that there might be some differences. And you wouldn’t have a version of each game for the Series S if the only difference was going to be resolution.
Ultimately they don’t have control over what developers choose to do. The architecture is the same, but in their words it’s up to developers to decide what the differences between the Series X and Series S versions are.

Remember when hardware had to be perfect on launch because they was no such thing as updates?
Playstation2 was perfect.
It released exactly 20 years ago in Europe.

these things are so complex, capable and have to be made with razor thin margins/sold at losses i can't really fault these companies for not delivering "perfect" products anymore.
Apparently the Series S is perfect as an emulation box?

Those bottom GDDR6 hitting 94C could either be;
a) Sony made an engineering mistake
b) Defective console
c) The thermal paste putty used was compromised when Tech Jesus opened up the metal casing.
Either 3 is possible at the moment, especially c), given the little we know about the putty.
