By Flutter Go To Postat this stage I wonder if it's a PS5 problem. Not the first time PS5 footage capture has issues. The Dirt team also mentioned that IGN butchered the PQ on the Series X video
Like, if they weren't such a big outlet, if I were a dev I'd just fucking refuse to let them distribute self-captured footage.

The DMC5 ray tracing mode has some sort of global illumination? The difference in nero's model is massive. Reminds me of metro

Pls stop. This is as ridiculous as DF's attempt with Control.
Trying to position the character in a light source so the lighting on the face looks as off as possible is the 2020 version of 2006's looking through a sniper scope at a wall right in front of you and saying "the textures need to look more crisp. Omg! PS2 style textures".
how dare digital foundry, a channel dedicated to graphics and the tech behind it, ridicule none ray traced faces like this? sounds like they are in the deep sony pockets again
I saw the vector animation in David Lee's video but I haven't seen a real-life version of this yet, which is super clever:

ray traced shadows and GI helps. You can go ahead and look at comparison footage where soft shadows helps the face looks less shit.

You realize the character is literally in the same position in your screenshot?

C'mon now. Selling it like the face looks like THAT without raytracing is bullshiting. It looks like THAT in less than 1% of gameplay situation. Why are people falling for this nonsense? Of course - raytracing increases fidelity and realistic lighting - but this poor attempt of making stuff look worse than it is is plain and simple not reflecting the fact. Go watch several comparisons flutter. It never looks as bad as in those screenshots.

Showcasing that RT can help instances where during gameplay characters can look like gremlins is a plus that I'm not quite sure why you're angry about. I dont even know why I need to explain that this isn't a conspiracy, when an overall improvement on characters appearances is good for everyone.

It's also totally fair to show a scene where RT doesn't really help fidelity at all and costs you half your frames.

The point of the comparison isn't that some models look like shit all the time, it's just that outside of Cust scenes, most character models don't hold up well at all, which is a hell of a lot more than 1% of the time.
Hell look at Uncharted 4, anytime Drake is in direct sunlight his face falls apart due to the lack of SSS and contact shadows.
When in favorable low light
ND were able to improve that in Last of Us 2 by having SSS enabled all the time on Ellie + having screen space shadows just for her eyelashes.

that's exactly the point.
First: it's a worst case scenario for a game character you are looking at the back of the head most of the time. Most of those extreme close ups are done by standing in front of wall and manipulating the camera just into the right spot to show the face and not have the camera go "through" the character or make him transparent.
I guess we just have to agree to disagree on that matter. I played Control without raytracing and it never looked as hideous as that screenshot above. I also played Uncharted 4 and that's #notmydrake
Second: visual impact Vs performance impact - I'm all for new rendering techniques and pushing the envelope - but some stuff just doesn't justify itself or is too early for the state of the tech available.
There is no headroom to do 4k, raytracing, 60fps and better visuals (textures, animation, effects, physics etc) on consoles apparently. Furthermore - just because a technique is old it doesn't mean it's bad. Using well performing approximations is always needed in each and every game to get other more deserving effects done.
how can you even achieve that angle in Control lmaoooo

The point is that it helps improve in edge cases. I dont think it's going to vastly improve how 3D models in games look during gameplay, I doubt Sy did too.
It's weird as hell that this needs to be said.

Just because I was curious. I haven't played it without RT on.
That other shot is edge case, but still valid. Granted, you're not getting an angle like that, outside of photo-mode, unless you're spinning the camera around to try and find it. That and it still won't look as such, unless you're directly under a light source that's overhead, like a spotlight. It still exists under certain circumstances and you can still see the improvement.

By Flutter Go To PostPeople shamed me for complaining about not playing rocket league on ps4 pro anymore cause it took too long to load a map or join a game compared to my pc.
Cold boot without skipping logos + logging online
Loading in general

If you're balls deep in photo mode and obsessed with good character models like I am you bet I'm noticing the shitty face lighting on most games. Especially in games like Uncharted and Control when everything looks so good.
You have to fiddle with the camera and lighting even more to get a good looking on game shot for most titles.
I can count on one hand the amount of console games where in game character faces look really good most of the time.

the thing that's trash is the in-family cross platform stuff--multiplayer may not see the loading it should because of waiting on current gen loads
By Dark PhaZe Go To Postthe thing that's trash is the in-family cross platform stuff–multiplayer may not see the loading it should because of waiting on current gen loadsYep like me talking about rocket league above
I end up loaded into a map instantly but have to wait 10-15 seconds for console players to load in so it makes no difference that I loaded in quickly unless the rest of the server is pc players
Hopefully there's no cross gen gameplay, and it just stays with next gen consoles and pcs in whatever games choose to do cross platform
By Dark PhaZe Go To Postphotomode shots are disingenuous when trying to show off these effects
To an extent, sure, but what you see in Control is what you get: photo-mode or nah.
The only photo mode I know of that spruces images is Grand Turismo and Driveclub. Everything else is exactly as is.
