Woodward and the Glazer's thought Dortmund were bluffing and were caught with their pants down. The Spanish club can only be one of two and I reckon it's Chelsea or Liverpool for the other English club.
United gambled in this transfer window that clubs would be willing to give bargains away due to the prevailing financial uncertainty. That hasn't really panned out that way at all. We only got a good deal on VDB because Ajax had promised him a transfer, Telles was in the final year of his contract and Cavani is going to cost a bomb in wages and signing on fee. Then we spent £10m on an 18 year old Uruguayan and potentially £30m on an Ivorian who has only played 24 minutes of senior football.
So we kept hedging, expecting prices to go down. They never did and we were left without signing our main target and paying a fortune for an over the hill striker and two unproven youth prospects.

Fair play to Wooders and Judge. I said the other day that I simply didn't believe they had this level of incompetence in them because it would be a much higher level of incompetence than even they had shown before. And I have to say I was 100% wrong.
I honestly thought when they started saying everything was a negotiating tactic and were playing the long game etc. that this was from actual dependable information they had received and not complete guesswork on their part. Staggering stuff even by their standards.

If one of the wings needs replacing at that point and Sancho wanted to join, we'd spend the money. With Van Dijk and Alisson they've shown that they're willing to pay silly money for players that are seen as sure bets in positions that we need.
