By reilo Go To PostI'm bad doing whiteboard sessions / tests myself. I think they're bunk. It's really catered to a classroom style experience because it was popularized by a bunch of Standford and Harvard nerds that wanted to hire people like them. And since none of them held a real job before they made it big as founders of a startup (Facebook, Google), they actually don't know what it's like to interview for a job.Yeah, you're pretty bang on.
I don't know a good way of truly assessing someone over the space of a few hours, but these tests always benefit a homogenous group
Well, I'm getting into seniority into my area and I am getting a lot of requests from recruiters on LinkedIn, I mean it's crazy right now.
I've been at my current company for 4 years and they are the cheapest ever. But I like the job and the colleagues. Still, should be a little more selfish and move if something nice comes up.
Or I could start my own company, but that feels risky as hell.

You can always go back and work for someone else again. Just take all the necessary precautions to avoid personal debt.

Job markets like today's don't come around all that often. At the very least try and parlay it in to something meaningful at your current job.
By Batong Go To PostGot that new position then, Jesal?Yep. I start in June. Taking May off to do a little relaxing before hand
Yeah, you guys are right. But how to find the courage... We're having the yearly wage negotiation meeting this week, so I'll see how that one goes.

Started a new job 3 weeks ago, second job in the industry (software dev). Going really well, was a very significant salary bump and it's certainly a place that will help be continue to progress technically as a dev after hitting a technical ceiling in my previous job. Feels fvery fucking good to have really taken my time in waiting for the right role to come around and to have nailed it. I was on furlough for an entire year in 2020/2021 so there was a lot of pressure to move jobs then, but the roles just....weren't right.
Took my time and it paid off. What a time.

By Batong Go To PostMashallah Will. Five days in the office or all from home or a mixture?
All at home. That's the one downside tbh I much prefer a mix. Company is in Manchester though and I'm in Newcastle so isn't really an option, going over to a mate's house once a week to work though. The 3 of us are devs so it's nice to get on with work but also have a bit of human interaction, been working very nicely the first couple of weeks
Nice one, sounds like you got some of the social bit covered, my next position I'll definitely look for a 2/3 day split on either side as I can't continue to working from all the time - it drains me.

Yeah, one day a week is good but I do wish it was more. My girlfriend is also WFH so I do get to see her too, but for the most part I'm just working in my office alone. There are so many perks to WFH but I really do miss a good office environment...
If my work building wasn't ugly as sin and located in butt fuck nowhere, sure, I would go once-twice a week. It would be nice to get out of the house and see people more often.
I miss working downtown sometimes, it was so vivid - keeps you sharp being with that many people in one part of town. The energy is awesome, stil is TBH. People that bet on suburbs over cities, smh.
But then again, I've turned my home office into something really nice. I get to go to the gym whenever I want, work when I want, zoom when I want, etc. The fliexibility/productivity cannot be beat.

Interesting.. I prefer a mix but I want flexible mix of wfh and office. Like some weeks I'll be in office four days others once a week.
Not sure I can be that flexible with growing but definitely feel hybrid is the way forward

By reilo Go To PostNothing worse about hiring than finding a good candidate and being told by HR to try to undercut their salary requirements only to waste 3 days of back and forth and land on the salary they wanted anyway.I always ask for 10k more than what I wanted anyway.
By Daz Go To PostI always ask for 10k more than what I wanted anyway.+10K starting
+10K the second year
+10K the third year
And so on, don't settle expectations only for the first year, make sure the new company understands your willingness to leave if they don't take good care of you. The signing contract has to be bullet proof in terms of salary expectations for every year.

By Frustrated_me Go To Post+10K startingIt's funny how that works. Here in Sweden you can most of the time only raise your wages substantially if you change jobs. Otherwise it's something like 1000-2000 dollars raise per year, which is below the inflation grade.

EDIT: Just got a company wide email from the CEO and itโs worse than I thought. Everybody will get 1.8-2.1% raise no matter how we performed last year. My hourly was raised with 8% for one customer and 40% for another and inflation is at 4% now, so you can understand how small of a raise this is. Everybody will get 100-600 dollars bonus, depending on how we performed last year and we will get one extra vacation day next year.
They gotta be kidding with this shit.

Handed in my notice at work for the end of April, getting a month or so of time off before I start the new job is a godsend
Iโd like you guys thoughts on this
So Iโve found out that out of all the folks on our team I make the most. My assistant gets like 1% commissions like I did when I was in the role. I get 4% commissions in my role now. Our product people donโt get any sort of commission or division sales bonus.
So when weโre out traveling to events or having work outings do I eat the bill? It all gets reimbursed anyway but Iโm just wondering about the office politics aspect of it. Iโm trying to keep the eagerness to help, way up. In general there seems to be a lot of jealousy of the sales reps from different teams but they seem to fw me hard.

I would yeah. And I mean if you're reimbursed then that's just free credit with your team lol
(wait for someone smarter to reply)

If it's getting reimbursed then definitely, either gets taken on my the most senior person or the person with the company card/who regularly submits expesnses
Yeah. If nothing else, your higher pay allows you to soak the cash outlay until the reimbursement comes in better than anyone else.

Sweden and Canada are alike in some ways, very high taxes (especially the province I'm in) but with a wide range of public social benefits which the whole population has access to (i.e., universal healthcare and higher education). Our salaries in Canada are also depressed, we're paid less than our counterparts in the USA, but we have access to social programs which the Americans don't.
Regarding fixed raises, for big corporate, that's probably just how it is until you end up in the executive suite, and then it's champagne flowing from the water fountains.
Some smaller companies might grant that sort of flexibility to negotiate raises, others will still of course be hell no.
Switching jobs still remains the best way to get ahead if that's your objective overall.

Had a student e-mail me today that they are worried they won't be able to pass the course after not doing well on the latest exam. I looked up their progress. They haven't been going to class, doing the homework or attending office hours. I wrote in the reply "To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why you would expect to be passing."
The kicker is that their current major is Education.

Depends where you're interviewing I guess? Can't say I typically notice anyone's hair when I'm interviewing them, except the couple of times I've had people coming in looking like genuine slobs.
That said, some places have a higher opinion of themselves and the standards of who should be allowed to work there, regardless of talent

If you will be taking a customer facing position, absolutely look as sharp as you can. Otherwise, whatever.
