Go somewhere where the business actually care about tech, places like systematica, cube and gsa I think are amazing and treat staff well. Do not go to millennium no matter how much they want to pay you. A HFT will want a pound of flesh where shops operating in the more mid frequency range will still be intense but less so.
Some really good discretionary shops out there as well like rokos that engineers seem to really love. Stay away from millennium

By JesalR Go To PostSoftware Engineer, either algos or appsAbsolute lad, good stuff man. Hedge funds/private equity is like end game career aspirations.

Hedge funds were something I was never really interested in, but if they’re gonna let me shortcut to retirement, I figure I may as well hear them out

Started the new year with a new job. I have been selling audio gear on the shop floor for around 6,5 years. My parttime job got a bit out of hand and became my fulltime one when I moved to our biggest store. Over there I ran the shop together with the manager as assistant due to unforeseen circumstances. Have really enjoyed doing that for the past year. In that company my next step would have been managing my own shop. After that there's only one more step up and there are only two positions available for that job. I.e. my chances of developing my career at that company were a bit slim and would take a lot of patience.
So because of the above I started looking around. First application was a direct hit, got hired at Urban Arrow. A company in electric cargo bikes. A really exciting and young company recently acquired by a huge company that also dabbles in stuff like automotive and solving mobility issues in general. Their core DNA still remains, but there's some decent money backing the company now to enable growth. My own background is traffic engineering so that's part of the reason this job really speaks to me. I'll be doing inside sales for our Dutch dealers and I got some great impressions of the company after my first week. Can definitely see myself working here a long time. And due to the process of growing the company there's plenty of opportunity for me to grow my career with the company in due time.

Get in Linius, sounds like a perfect position for ya!
I'm squeezing my final days at my current contract (got extended in the end) then i am taking the summer months off - travelling, yoga, running.
Then I'll have a re think where I wanna go. Not in the yoga only future at the moment but definitely not focused for an IT career when I'm in my mid 40s.
Guess I'm lucky in that sense and definitely appreciative that I can take the summer off without affecting me too much financially 🙏.

Happy to see the Ws 👍
Been thinking on the offer some more and I'm glad I gave myself a week to think things over. I'll probably end up taking it if I don't get a positive response from the first spot that I've been waiting on by Tuesday.
I also got offered a senior instructor position at the place I quit last Thanksgiving 💀 its nice to be wanted I guess.
I really want to do something new though. I have no intention of pushing this career path further than I already have because of the commitments it would require.

Congrats breh
Welcome back ! Always nice to have options glad you settled on something you think you’ll enjoy. A year is a hell of a long time to be able to rest up and decide what you want to do.

thnx m8
but fr i took way less money than i'd normally demand in my field for the opportunity to even occasionally work from home and get into an environment where work/life balance means more than "just don't die". i've probably pulled out of more jobs in the past year than i ever saw myself doing too. everything from recruiters lying to themselves so they could lie to me, to mask off on the way to the door, plus long term priorities changing thanks to covid making me come for air.
By Smokey Go To PostCongrats breha year is long enough to forget how to get ready to go to work. i am LOST right now. might need my grandma to walk me to the door like my first day of school i am down horrific rn

Only about to be doing a six months of hiatus myself but two months will be for travelling so yeah, a year sounds too much to me.

thanks m8s

Solidarity for board artists trying to get a better agreement today. AMPTP, as usual, doesn't give a shit until the PR is bad enough.
Some corporations now expect board artists to design characters and props, construct layouts, write dialogue, animate inbetweens, and a lot more tasks that used to be spread across multiple positions. Animation was one of the industries that didn't miss a beat when things shut down, and the suits are shamelessly ignoring that while bragging about profits soaring. Production workers and writers also trying to get equal compensation for working just as hard as, if not harder than, live action positions. Colorists paid less to this day for the sole reason that the position was mostly female when it originated. Lots going on. If you guys want to help, spreading the hashtags does a lot.

Had my yearly review and ended up getting a 10k raise! First time I have gotten a significant raise since working construction during high school summers.

Customer Support: "A customer keeps writing in complaining they cannot complete an order. They are VERY angry and demand you fix this."
Me: "Can I see screenshots?"
*one screenshot later*
Me: "They need to add a payment method in order to place the order."

I love my job 🙃

This may sound surprising coming from me but hiring people is fucking hard and time consuming. I've never really appreciated the time saving aspect my job provides, I feel exhausted, screening CV's for four positions that I want to start all by first week of April (one offer accepted so three positions left). A good situation to be in ofc but tiresome non the less.

By DY_nasty Go To Postif hiring at that level is hard you're probably doing it rightNigel been through it, like really been through the whole the black experience and still thinks he isn't worthy of his achievement. It's a sign of a good person.

Hiring is the worst part of my job.
Might suck that it takes a while, but seems like you are taking your time and hopefully will get the right people. Then you can relax after it all.

Nothing worse about hiring than finding a good candidate and being told by HR to try to undercut their salary requirements only to waste 3 days of back and forth and land on the salary they wanted anyway.

Thanks guys, its really appreciated actually
Feel like I'm a million miles a way and think it all come crashing down at any second but we are certainly heading in the right direction.
Hiring has showed me that I am alot more particular about my wants than I realised.

I've always hated everything I've done on the hiring side.
I hate interviews, because the number of people who pass those tests and aren't worth, or inversely don't do well but you believe in more, is astounding.

It why some HR are my mortal enemy. It's insanity

What's your interview style or do you have set questions you have to ask?

By Kidjr Go To PostWhat's your interview style or do you have set questions you have to ask?Typically we're running them through a few set tests, so that at the end you have to really argue that the test isn't always that valuable. I've seen too many very good people have a bad hour to really believe in them

I'm bad doing whiteboard sessions / tests myself. I think they're bunk. It's really catered to a classroom style experience because it was popularized by a bunch of Standford and Harvard nerds that wanted to hire people like them. And since none of them held a real job before they made it big as founders of a startup (Facebook, Google), they actually don't know what it's like to interview for a job.
