Since a lot of us live in apartments or houses and we all need help decorating or arranging our spaces, I figured this would be a good thread to make. Especially since we all are stuck at home for a lot of the time now. Or just use it to discuss fancy looking buildings, home renovations, urban planning, cities, etc. it's all related one way or another.

Books I'll recommend:
Literally anything by Frank D.K. Ching but especially Interior Design Illustrated and Architecture: Form, Space, and Order.
Junichiro Tanizaki - In Praise of Shadows (1900's essay about Japanese aesthetics, great for inspiration)
William J.R. Curtis - Modern Architecture Since 1900 (influential and a massive survey on everything... since 1900. Frequently assigned in university courses)
Gaston Bachelard - The Poetics of Space
Jane Jacobs - The Death and Life of Great American Cities

I'm not in the market for an Eames but when it comes to my back and feet there's a high upper limit now. Just can't sleep on crap, sit in crap or walk on crap.
By Yurtlicious Go To Postif your chair is more expensive than your tv setup you're doing it wrongFuck it Yurt, let's got full Nordic with expensive lounge chairs and get a Finnish one from the maestro Aalto
By Yurtlicious Go To Postif your chair is more expensive than your tv setup you're doing it wrongYou underestimate the price of reilo’s TV setup
Lmao for our first apartment we bought the classic Poäng
Not into Eames chairs looks too much like a cross between a lounge chair and an office chair, idk. Probably depends on the setup.

Bonus point, Poäng means 'point'.
Gonna need more than that, glass top? Wood top? Aesthetics you like? Hate? Light color? Dark color? Any color? Then limit on price and do you want storage?
no glass - more of a fabric type that resembles an ottoman - I saw one at a show room months ago, I have been unable to find it since.
By Daz Go To PostAny recommendations for a coffee table - picture it in a modest sized living room
By batong_doicare Go To PostMeh, that is but plagiarism of an AaltoIts also like $50. Great for us, looks good, and pretty comfortable

Lived too long with pets and carpet.
Never again. Never.
If you can't deal with stepping on a cold floor getting out of bed, get some area rugs.

I'm trying to non-ironically get this lifestyle
Minus all the clutter. But everything online is sleek, modern, whites/blacks/neutrals or the other way is way way too much all at once

Try googling "modern rustic small" or something similar to get something that is closer to your aesthetic without also looking supremely dated and trash.
If you want that just look for craftsman, mission, and if you got a regional place that does imports in Amish made stuff, you can commission some custom made stuff. I actually prefer warm woods over sterile white, black, gray, metallic aesthetic. Keep in mind real good solid wood stuff is not cheap but it does last and it might be a bit big for the space you're occupying. It really only works in larger rooms and homes, apartments not so much.

By Perfect Blue Go To PostHow do y’all feel about carpeted flooring? I must know lol.Refuse to rent a place if it has carpets. If I buy a house and it has carpets, first thing to go.
I’m 100% against them. 😂
also just an honest thing too, some of the mission/craftsman stuff got some edges to them that extend well past where you think they are visually. if you are not a careful person you will constantly bump into the shit. I should provide more visual aids so:

First house I bought was from 1952. Removed carpets. Original wood floors

Rugs are what you really want, carpets are a different thing and usually are cheap to quickly cover bad flooring.
I moved out of my condo (pictured below) and into my first home. I loved (and still do) my condo but I think I grew out of it and needed a bigger project. I wanted a yard and garden and all that Jazz, I wanted no neighbours and a fully detached home. Mostly though, I wanted more natural sun, my condo is facing east while my house faces the west with windows on every side. One thing I wanted to change up from the condo to the house is to ditch the "edgy modern" look with a lot of glass, to more earhy grounded look. I really dig the mid-century home look, it's timeless really.
Some pics from the condo and the house.
This is an Italian indigo leather chair, perfect forner for reading.
Before the chair had arrived, the living room looked like this - I love simple, minimilast and 50's vibes. Note the Barcelona chair, it doesn't really fir the look and feel of my house (ported from the condo) but I think it works. Rug imported from Turkey.
Here is the view of behind the main Sofa (from Article.com) - I have a media unit with a record player and some of my books I read. Birds of Paradise plant + records on the bottom
My condo was the bomb, I loved how airy it felt and everything had purpose but man it lacked natural sunlight
So many good memories here, tons of parties and gatherings
Back to the house, my new dining table (also from Article.com). Rug imported from Iran.
New Kitchen at the new house is 2 tone, grey and white - appliances mostly Miele, range is propane/electric with 4 burners
I love plants, so:
Look at this beauty:
Tulips from the garden in sprin:
View of the terase outside, Sonos systems extends here (BBQ area in the back) - full privacy with tall hedges. BTW in the corner left is my second Birds of Paradise plant, leaving this outside for the summer:
A shot of the record player behind the sofa in the living room, on top of the media unit (I really love this furniture)

By Frustrated_me Go To PostChairs > TV setup all daynot for me man! I end up trashing all my furniture anyway so it's never worth it to go big
One thing that I adapted to very well is not having the kitchen + living room together in the house. My condo is an open concept unit, which is fine and serves its purpose in a condo, where space is tight. However, in a home, I quickly adapted to having my living room be in one wing of the house and the kitchen being on the opposite. It creates well established spaces and defines purpose much better than open concept design. The living room and the kitchen are much better served being seperated.
My favorite space is the living room during sunset, the sun rays hitting, the birds chirping and complete quiteness... Throw in some wine and Amy Winehouse, or some Aretha Franklin and it's golden.
