Coming up on 30 hours. Scouring every corner, taking encounters very slowly when I can and restarting a lot of them a lot of times
Finished last night. I thought it was great overall. I do wish they had fleshed out the groups a little more esp the rattlers. Like what the hell were they? Why did they imprison everyone? At first I thought they were rapist and may have been but there were women amongst them so I dunno.
I think if they do a part 3 they should go with Abby and Lev. And start it right when they drive off on the boat. Show their quest to meet up with fireflies and see where it goes from there. I think I am done with Ellie and I feel like her story should be done.

I love that it doesn't happen here. You can do the same trick during the scar encounter when the brute bursts through the door:

No! As it is: The game starts with us being re-introduced to Joel + Tommy. Then Ellie in Jackson with new gameplay mechanics. We're introduced to Abby who's trying to track someone. She ultimately encounters two of our faves from the previous game and things get ominous once Tommy lets his guard down and reveals too much (ie their names) to Abby. When this happens in the presence of the WLF, they're fucked. And then you're back to Ellie as she rushes to the house in an effort to save Joel and Tommy.
As the player you're ready to go in guns a blazin'. Abby and everyone in that room is gonna get their comeuppance, right? After all, I've been playing this next gen "Part II" of the franchise and I've had 2-hours of practice in learning how to become a killing machine. When I (Ellie) get to that cabin/house, everyone in that room is gonna die swiftly! But that's not the case. Our narrow-minded focus leads to us getting jumped and we're powerless to do anything, and must watch as our father figure is clubbed to death right in front of us.
When Ellie is pinned down helplessly, we (the player) feel it just like she is. We have no agency or control, and based on the character beats to this point we feel betrayed by Abby and all the gameplay moments with her to this point. 'I can't believe I just helped the enemy track down the heroes of the previous game.' If we are then FORCED to control Abby as she kills Joel, all the tension, despair, frustration that we just had as Ellie is gone. It's thematically wrong and would be story breaking to make us do that. Everything that transpires in that moment needs to literally be out of our control. We must continue to see things from Ellie's perspective at the time, not Abby's.
In that moment, there's no sensible reason for introducing the element of making the player swap to Abby - the antagonist, so that I (the player) kill Joel (who's a "good guy"), only to return control to me as Ellie for the next 10 hours.
How can I legitimately play a game where I'm on a quest for retribution against myself (Abby), if I was the one who had control and killed Joel?
If you really want to give us (the player) control in a scene where we kill Joel, entire game narrative must change too. You will need to rework the scene so that Abby shoots his leg and then we control Abby clubbing Joel to death. Not how the game currently presents it. And if you do that, Ellie and Abby being different sides of the same coin will have to be plotted completely different. The 3 days as Ellie, 3 days as Abby framing device must be changed to accommodate a scenario where we (the player) killed a character we know.
Congrats to Lev, the only PoC who makes it to the end of a Last of Us game
Also Jeffrey Wright got the "and" in the credits for a day of work, sweet gig

The blood tech in this game is crazy. Warm blood melts snow, blood goes in between cracks in tiles, soaks through bandages, etc
I was taking my slow ass time with this game trying to go for more stealth but stopped and just going in guns blazing now.

playing it again on survivor as I stream it for a girl--she's digging it so far
Gameplay feels like hard, except slightly less forgiving in every aspect. I didn't do new game plus because it feels like cheating to me.
I want Dead Space: Naughty Dog edition now.

Got the game a few weeks ago only to find out my four year hold had been putting tissue in the disc drive, anyway problem solved and I got to start this weekend.
This game is fucking beautiful, there are several times where I just stop and I'm like nah, this isnt where gaming is. Animations and the sound is incredible. I'm only about 8 hours in so fairly early on in the game but really enjoying it so far.
Will be back when I finish.

Well I finally finished it last night. I'm mostly terrible at the combat in this game even though I very much enjoy it. Taking things slow, mostly stealth and trying to find most of the collectibles I ended up playin about 31 hours to finish the main story on normal. Definitely will go for a New Game+ at some point.
Thought the story telling worked very well. I managed to stay away from spoilers mostly (knew Joel would die though) so I didn't expect the switch at all. And even when it happened I kind of expected it to be over soonish. It even made me play more freely. Because as Ellie I felt more connected to the character and I played with much more care, afraid of being killed. As Abby I just played much more brutal until after a short while you realize Abby is here to stay for a while. Really liked the idea of experiencing the Seatlle days trough both characters. Gameplay wise I think I even like Abby more.
Not quite sure how I feel about the end yet. But considering we get to invest so much time in getting to know Abby and emphatize with her more I think I'm at peace with this solution. Both had a brutal attack on one another and in the end both can carry on to live their life. Was surprised to see Dina left but that's a good decision I'd say. Makes sense for Dina not wanting to be stuck there alone not knowing if Ellie would ever return. It did feel off she didn't even left so much as a note.
If we're going to get more material down the road I'd love to see more from Abby and Lev. Their partnership works really well for the combat and exploring and I think there's an interesting story to tell yet. Mostly with the Fireflies still being out there. How she ended things with the WLF's could definitely be part of the story too. Wouldn't be surprised if Isaac is still alive since we don't explicitly see him dying on screen. It shouldn't be a third game, but just a stand alone adventure in the same universe. Honestly, as opposed to Uncharted with this franchise I would love it if they just keep making more of it. There's so much more of the country left to explore, it's not limited to a small set of characters and area.

Game starts after the first human encounter in Seattle day 1 tbh.
It’s been like 90% cutscenes and scavenging. I’m on Seattle Day 2 so I know I’m probably still pretty early on.
I like the game I’m just surprised you do considering you hate shit like MGS and Yakuza.

So scavenging doesn't count as gameplay these days?
Cutscene to control ratio is way down in this for a ND game, even compared to an Uncharted

Sy is not the type of person interested in collecting empty bottles, scissors and dirty laundry to craft items

Yeah man, scavenging is like the most important part of the game. I do remember early on in Seattle Day 1 that I willingly entered a place with some infected, wasted lots of mats and the rewards were next to none. Or all these empty drawers and closets you open along the way. Fucking hell mate. Sometimes it's a cruel job.
ok good to know I wasnt being paranoid, the game makes you feel COMPELLED to scavenger, like I feel I need to survive (which is obviously the point)
The game is designed in a way that absolutely requires you to investigate every room you pass by. Depending on how high you set the difficulty you'll find more or less loot. I suspect that a lot of the empty drawers and closets I've seen along the way would have been filled if the difficulty setting was lower. Since they simply hand out more mats in that case. I'm also happy that they always tell you when you've cleared a room of enemies as a cue to move around the room safely and loot everything. Whenever Ellie says something like "oof that's all of them" or many variations on that kind of interaction you'll know the area you're in is cleared of enemies.
One thing I hated was finding a card in a car early on in the game, by smashing the windows. From that moment on I was practically unable to walk past a car without smashing all the windows just to be sure. Or whenever you drop in a new area to walk backwards first to look for cards. Most of the time you find nothing, but I just can't skip it either just because you never know.

Same but I saw it happen in a prerelease video so I was smashing car windows from the start 😂. I think I only ever found something twice though.
It's a good thing they made smashing windows satisfying.

one of the very few games if not the only one where scavenging wasn't totally annoying and I actively wanted to do it
I was on hard and had no issues with ammo/arrows. Bottles and bricks are everywhere too
reading one page notes got old fast though lol you won't catch me writing shit during an apocalypse thats for sure, that pen will get better use for stabbing.

Yeah I still ended up missing quite a few things that I intend to fix in a new game + run. It keeps ya busy.
And I personally really liked the storytelling trough the environment. A lot of the time you'll be alone and dialogue can't serve as a way to tell the story. Or the character you're with knows just as much about the place you're at as you. And by reading all the notes you get a general idea of what happened at that location. Also the little throwbacks are wonderful. There's a safe in a building for example. And you won't find any information about it inside the building. Only to find a note across the street in a different building referencing that safe again and thereby telling the story of whoever the people were that lived in that street. Some of these notes feel silly, like who are they writing these notes for? But a lot of the time they make sense and drag me into the story more.

you can make the scavenging even more hands-off in the accessibility options. There's an auto-pickup option in there. Something more games, like pick-up-animation-hell Dragon Age Inquisition, could use.

I'm not someone who stresses over spoilers. I just avoid what I plan on seeing or playing.
But this is fucked up by Collider to intentionally put a plot point for this game directly into their header.
Awful to have that recommended as something to read. 🤬
