I started feeling the length when I got to the hospital as Abby but it pays off in the end. Pacing is such a difficult thing to nail in a game this size, but its all in service of the narrative and I think they get away with it here as opposed to something like Uncharted 4 which felt like a pointless slog in a lot of places.

Having a pop at Jurassic Park 2 is some big dick energy for a sequel that is in development and had people sceptical that it'd live up to its predecessor.
Loving this. kinda miss carefree, curious and talkative Ellie

fucking hell, lads.
it really does pick up.
this is so tense. i love it.
i'm now heading to the hospital with lev.
and that sex scene was… nicely done? i mean, usually, these scenes are godawful in video games, but this looked like a scene in any other movie.

or at the least the chapters I think you'd personally appreciate. My fav act was the one you just finished the collapsed building
I'm fairly near the end (I assume) Just left the aquarium on Abby Day 3 to find Lev
Honestly, think the length of this could have been tightened up slightly, it isn't quite there yet, but very close to wearing thin.

Is there no way to repair an upgraded melee weapon? Got an axe with one hit left, and walking past a bunch of blades and tape that I can't pick up

By JesalR Go To PostI'm done, and I honestly do not know how I feel
By /sy Go To PostDefinitely not. I think the one thing I can certainly say about that game is that I have absolutely no desire to play it again.
By /sy Go To PostOnce the 60fps PS5 patch hits, it'll be at the top of TPS gameplauLet's be honest now, TPS gameplay is dull as fuck on the whole.
Vanquish was good, but really nothing groundbreaking.
Max Payne was good for it's time, but dated as hell now.
Everything below those has been over the shoulder cover shooters since the first Gears game.
By HonestVapes Go To PostLet's be honest now, TPS gameplay is dull as fuck on the whole.I'd say you are selling Vanquish very short. I don't know about groundbreaking but when there's literally nothing like that game or attempting to be that game it's hard to call it anything else.

I've never been a big max payne fan. people online love max payne 3 though.
Gears does Gears really well.
third person shooters are hard, often the "shooter" part is the weakest aspect of these games. Uncharted 4 was a big jump in controls, gun feel and fluidity but the lack of stealth options fail the few encounters in that game. Lost Legacy added in silencers finally which made the encounter and level design seem worth it but still on the whole, I'd rank them as just slightly above average but fall apart on higher difficulties. UC 1-3 are standard popnshot shooters. Nothing special there.
MGSV is one of, if not the best controlling games out there period, gunplay and melee is weak, there's a lot there to play with but the game doesn't incentivise the use of all the systems.
Last of Us II takes the best elements of my favorite TPS games, refines them to all fuck and wraps it in gorgeous presentation and design. It controls fluidly(which will only feel better at 60fps), the aggressive human and dog AI forces movement and use of your entire arsenal, going loud and escaping into stealth is viable and very satisfying loop + very satisfying guns.
By FortuneFaded Go To PostCompleted Survivor+. Now what do I do?Get the platinum trophy?
alright, just finished it.
it was very good, and the gameplay is the best it's ever been as far as naughty dog are concerned.
when i play it again, i'll try to be as smooth as sunhi is with the transitions because i've only been able to pull that off very sparsely. the shoot outs and encounters are a lot of fun. and it's so satisfying to mix up melee combat with taking out enemies from a distance.
story-wise, also very good. this is a really well-written game. and i felt bad both when you're trying to kill ellie and, later on, abby. experiencing both sides is something that paid off, so in that regard, druckmann succeeded, but, like others have said, it has some serious pacing issues.
what happens now is that you're reaching a climax with ellie only for the game to all of a sudden take you out of it and... make you start playing as abby as if this is the first hour of gameplay where its is teaching you all of its mechanics. and this what i really, really dislike about the game: all these walking sections. oh my god. i don't think they'll ever stop doing these, but i despise walking sections, especially when they're this fucking long. just turn it into a nice cut scene? i love watching cut scenes! it works so much better. i don't care about a possible coin being hidden off the path somewhere.
like hixx said, the graphics when ellie says goodbye to dina are unreal. the graphics really shine when it's dark or the weather's rainy/overcast. it looks like cg at times. phenomenal stuff. i'm truly impressed by what naughty dog have pulled off here. the only time when the game looks less than stellar is when when it's sunny during the day. that's when the game merely looks good.
a more streamlined "director's cut" would bump this up to a 9.5, but as it is now, a 9 will have to do.
i award it the mythical bud seal of approval.

Noticed a couple of things when I replayed:
The hole in the fence that Ellie uses to enter the aquarium was when Abby used her buff arms to bend the metal
In the sniper section, Tommy shoots to lure the infected, just like he teaches Ellie to do in an earlier flashback.

The only nice thing I can say about the walknchat sections is that you're able to jog through them. You can go through that first flashback in like 5 minutes. They were absolutely insufferable in prior ND sections because you walked even slower than the normal walk speed. Like bud said, they can be turned into cutscenes. Entirely needless. Amazing that people wish the game had more of these sections.
Another thing the game and future ND games can ditch, are the entirely predictable 'mash square QTEs in cutscenes'. Makes sense when you're grabbed in gameplay but in a cutscene? Stop it, please.
Also, what was the point of the shake controller/flashlight battery mechanic? I did that like 3 times in 35 hours.
Joel's 'space for idiots' book.
Ellie's horse getting spooked before getting blown the fuck up

I still enjoyed the museum the second time. It's such a sweet moment and it's nice to see Ellie with some innocence still
Replaying on Survivor+ and I'm not good at this lol (played on hard the first time). This was a breeze up until Hillcrest. God. Fucking. Damnit. Game telling me after I die "You can change the difficulty by going into settings" OH CAN I? I DIDN'T KNOW THAT. I just sprinted through the very last section after the long street.
Last night I got stuck at the part on day 2 with Ellie where you go up against the Scars the second time. Was actually doing well, made it through without dying but was down to 2 pistol bullets, no health and enough shit to make one molotov. Got to the part where you open a door and the big fucker with the sledgehammer comes at you. I remembered it being just him but NOPE there's some piece of shit shooting arrows at you at the same time, and a guy with a shotgun. Finally figured out I had to get enough distance between me and sledgehammer guy to make a molotov without getting shot by Hawkeye. Was gonna try again for the 20th time then accidentally clicked restart encounter instead of restart checkpoint so now I have to start the whole thing all over THANKS GAME THAT'S SO COOL WHAT A FUN TIME I'M HAVING WITH THIS.
Also for some reason it won't let me craft 3 arrows at a time even though I have the upgrade, seems wrong

Think the arrow crafting is mislabeled
The upgrade says it'll take me from two at a time to three, but when I craft it only makes one

Basically means I never craft normal arrows, balls to using a full tape and blade for one arrow. Rather just upgrade a melee weapon.

Hopefully the multiplayer game they make isn't total dogshit. The mechanics and level design should translate pretty well. Hilcrest is basically a perfect MP map.

Funny, that is exactly the spot where I'm at now.
The stealth aspect is quite MGS5-esque. But the patterns in guard movement don't seem as mechanical. The story so for is eh. It shines in the quite moments and loses me during action and spectacle. The fact the autosave works a bit too good to be honest diminishes the stakes during intense stealth / run & hide sequences. I feel like the game autosaves after each enemy killed if I stay undetected, which is a bit much.
But the game definitely has got its hooks deep into me. I want to progress to see what happens next.
Playing on Hard and I'm definitely resource hogging. Should have gone with an even harder challenge.
Wonder if the MP will be on PS4 or if they'll keep it separate for PS5. I imagine eventually when they do a GOTY edition on PS5 they'll bundle it in.
Bring me it anyway, loved it on PS4 with the lads lol

i agree with this.
gotta play on survivor, longer points between checkpoints/autosaves. I think that might be setting you can tweak if you want to keep everything else at hard difficulty.
By /sy Go To PostYepCool. Will check this out.
EDIT: Ok is Troy Baker just phoning it in? He can't hit the same "Joel" voice not only across two games, but is also massively inconsistnet across different scenes in this game in my opinion.
Finished it a few days ago. Amazing sound design, really impressive tech through out. It's really great mechanically, I appreciated the narrative ambition despite it being mostly clunky, the writing was weak but serviceable. Every aspect of the game is expensive, polished and high quality but the game is less than the sum of its parts in the end.
Just done the chase in the truck with Abby. Wonder if it'll feel not weird using her at some point. Guessed that she was the surgeon's daughter from the moment she said they were looking for someone in Jackson, glad ND didn't drag out her motivation after regaining control of her.
Genuinely cannot guess as to how the story will end here. Ellie could kill Abby, vice versa, both could die, neither may die. They've just about made Abby a sympathetic enough character that you wouldn't feel cheated if she survived. Hard to really disagree with either her or Ellie's actions, even if they're motivated purely by vengeance. Just opposite sides of the same coin innit.
Not a massive fan of how slowly the story moves, and the structure of constantly and painstakingly moving towards some landmark or other on the horizon. Still engrossing as fuck though, the sparse resources and encounter design require constant attention. Two particular highlights are the fight before you get the boat, and the bloater in the arcade
