Have we actually seen both side views of the case? If that right/bottom side has any vents on it, the stand will be necessary to prevent overheating.

Just two weeks ago everyone was inferring how it will look based on the developers kit and that was way off base.
Plus many were already wrong about the SSD side and some have doubled down and are continuing to do so even after third-party developers and game engine developers have claimed the thing was legit, so why not... wait? Wait for it to be in people's hands and teardowns and schematics?

Let's just wait maybeVapes may be as jaded as me on stuff like that with reviewer's and pre-production models of products being not quite the same or shown off in controlled environments different than what typical users will have in order to increase the hype machine. Or just general "new product" bias seeping in.
I typically don't trust hardware reviews until things are done with retail units or using retail BIOS, etc. and also try to not get too excited about pre-release hype for much the same reason.

I will also repeat right here and now what I have always said about the PS5 SSD: I am doubtful its faster speed in comparison to the XSX and mainstream nvme SSDs will result in tangibly different gameplay possibilities.

oh I'm not excited or anything honestly, none of this makes any difference to me, they might as well release a PS4 with a new coat of paint and I'd still buy it. I just want a new console with new games

I guess they already beat whatever that theoretical on my part ROI that would have been my making this such a distinguishing feature, though, so I guess the point is moot. Except to consumers' pocket books.

By HonestVapes Go To PostPlease understand, much like Kibner knows his shit with audio gear and Yurt knows his shit with JRPGs, my area of knowledge is rooted squarely in small form factor PCs, which entails cooling power hungry components in small enclosures.
From the mock ups I've seen of the PS4, I'd estimate that it's in the ballpark of 8-10 litres in overall volume. You don't need to have a case that big to adequately cool high end components inside when you have the advantages of direct die mounting, custom made heatsinks and a fully custom case. With off the shelf PC parts, a 6-7l case is fine with proper airflow, and 5l is doable too
However, when you have a case with obstructed airflow, you need to overspec the cooling solution to overcome that.
If cooling was at the forefront of their design, then it would have been designed from the ground up with a clear airflow path through case with minimal obstruction which just isn't the case. Assuming there's vents at the back there's at least a 90 degree turn in the airflow from the top/front vents to the back vents, and the fans will either be attempting to exhaust or intake air through those relatively obstructed and small vents on the top/front of the case.
So with that said, I stand by my assertion that they've put form over function. Which yeno, isn't necessarily a bad thing. I dislike the look of the PS5 but not because it's bigger than other consoles in comparison.

cerny has specifically mentioned it during the grand unveiling of the specs. why would sony feel the need to address that at the ps5's coming out party?
there's also rutter assuring the guardian that "a great deal of effort” has gone into making sure the ps5 will be less noisy.
and then you have writers mentioning it in their game reviews and, well, pretty much everyone.
it's a thing. the ps4 is loud.
so, then it makes zero sense for sony to set out to make the biggest console we have ever seen simply because because they like the form. if the size wasn't the direct cause of them wanting this thing to be as silent as possible, it'd have been smaller. you can make the exact same "bold," "standout" design in a smaller form factor--and that would've been more impressive, anyway.
why design a big fat console when you can make a smaller one? makes no sense whatsoever.
i just don't see how anyone could think that the cooling system--whatever it will end up being--was "an afterthought."

Sad to see Slaent PC brothers trying to pass themselves as experts when they knows as much about hardware as the dude working a the PcParts Store. Assembling a PC doesn’t really give you any sort of authority on the how and why of the PS5 hardware design.
