The reason I didn't like TLOU is because I didn't enjoy the gameplay. Everything else that TLOU2 excels at (character work, graphics, work building, sound) is absolutely there in TLOU1 and is sensational, but the game feels bad to play.
The player movement feels awfully clunky and heavy, the gunplay is bad, the stealth is bad, the AI is bad, the level design is bad. Gameplay will always always come first and to me that game plays poorly, I even tried to go back to it last month ahead of 2 and felt exactly the same as I did when I bought remastered on release.
It's crazy to me how different my opinions from 1/2 are because 2 is pretty much the same game in terms of gameplay but SO refined I think it feels absolutely fantastic to play, ND finally nailed character movement (it's much better than TLOU in 4 but it feels very weird and floaty still). The gunplay is solid. The 'wide linear' level design is absolutely fantastic. The AI is absolutely sensational, particularly the human encounters are absolutely unbelievable in their intensity. All pinned down by great stealth mechanics that feel fair, when I got spotted, it felt like it was my fault and if I reacted enough I could get back into a stealth state quickly. Just all around brilliant.
By that token, RDR2 is an absolute abomination of a 'game'. Story, characters, visuals....all brilliant, but as a game? Beyond bad.

If you hated TLOU's gameplay, It is absolutely worth giving 2 a fair shot because it is FAR better in every single way.

My brother is playing through TLOU1 for the first time (we’re taking turns when we die) and omg it’s so dated compared to TLOU2 lol, dialogue and cutscenes are still ok to watch but everything else is just so improved in TLOU2

TLOU1 is fucking amazing when playing on Grounded, it's far more reliant on stealth and the level design is perfect for it.
We don't have to argue that everything is more simple. TLOU1 released in 2013 and ND did improve massively in nearly every aspect, but that doesn't change the amazing part 1.
Playing without that shitty listen mode, scouting the infected/human movement and act accordingly. Using the bottles and bricks, because they're absolutely essential and placed so damn well.
