Nothing compared to when he enters Heaven
this level has better ambient than combat music, especially when the chanting kicks in
been playing this game for hours straight, it's fuckin fantastic. much needed stress relief.
After the 1st level I wasnt too keen on the changes from the last game as I kept running out of ammo but now I am midway through the 2nd I am starting to enjoy it more.
My wife bought it for me from Amazon. The game box just contained codes for the Bethesda launcher but then they emailed a preorder bonus as a Steam store code

So I guess I'm close to finishing it. Arrived at theKhan Maykr boss and do believe 2016 is a better game.
Yes the movement options are awesome but at least on Nightmare I'm using it mainly to run away. Talk about ludonarrative dissonance: Mr Rip and Tear is frail as fuck especially at the start of the game. While you do unlock the toolset to survive and do so in style a lot of the most difficult arena designs are set up to run in circles pick one or two enemies off resupply through fodder and rinse and repeat. I actually like the Marauder battles because they are the only ones where you have to stand your ground and fight, but the room has to be absolutely cleared before you can even think of doing it. Because even early enemies like the Arachnatron or the Mancubus will melt you up close.
Furthermore: why even add Beserk, Haste and QuadDamage if you place them only twice in the entirety of the game. And since most arenas introduce the enemies in waves you kinda hold off on using them because you're not sure if you'll need them ... Until you complete the arena without using them at all.
The slayer's gates are the highlights no doubt I just wish some of the other arenas would have been on par most feel rather tedious.
Platforming and story are trash. Especially the delivery is miles away from the dead pan 2016 "idgaf" Doomguy comedy.

By HonestVapes Go To PostI’m assuming 40FPS at 4K is not normal with a 2080Ti?
No, turn off v-sync. Should get near 120fps.
By Laboured Go To PostNo, turn off v-sync. Should get near 120fps.Ta. Figured that out after updating the drivers and playing in the settings. Had myself worried at first.
Edit: so is there anyway to set vsync on without tanking performance?
Tried the different in game options, tried turning it on in the Nvidia CP. End result is the same. I rarely see games that benefit from adaptive sync, but this is def one that would.
Liking this shit a lot. Thought going through Black Mesa and HL:A over the last couple weeks would've dulled my enthusiasm for a FPS games, but nope. Don't think I'm that far, got to my first marauder fight. Didn't instantly hate the marauder.
I remember going into Doom 2016 with no real expectations for it and coming away with the feeling that it had a lot more in common with DMC, MG:R, etc. than other FPS games. This is definitely doubling down on that aspect of Doom 2016. I'm all for it too.
Not a huge fan of the platforming sections thus far, or how the levels are so disjointed compared to the previous game. It's Doom though so none of that shit really matters or gets in the way of core gameplay.

Just use the ballista to wreck him. He is though a weird addition as you kind of have to dedicate large amount of your concentration to him alone unlike any other enemy.
DOOM related Quake: Champions (a free pvp game) update:
NEW ARCADE MODE: RIP AND TEAR
- DOOM Slayer-only FFA Mode
- Spawn 120 HP / 0 AP
- Spawn with Super Shotgun and infinite shells
- Spawn with Berserk ability ready, with an insta-glory-kill punch

Sunhi missed a shot there so all you need is basically three dodges

I didn't find them challenging or all that annoying, honestly. I enjoyed the marauder fights for the most part.
Motherfucker glitched on me part way through a fight tho, wouldn't attack at all beyond summoning the dog so there was no way to damage him. Spent about 5 minutes dicking around before restarting the last checkpoint to redo the whole arena.
Finished the game now tho. Overall, feel pretty underwhelmed by it.
Replaying the levels on the hardest difficulty and enjoying things a lot more now than I was on my first run through. Probably the biggest sin this game committed is spacing all the guns out throughout all the levels, instead of giving you everything early on.
The flow of all the earlier levels/encounters feels so much better with all the gear at your disposable from the off and you can properly focus down the harder enemies with the SSG/balista quick swap combo.

Difficulty-wise, gotta be honest, going from the normal mode to the hardest doesn't feel massively different to me.
Absolutely smashed that first fight with a marauder on the replay. Holy fuck I died to that fucker on normal, now I can rinse through it in a few cycles on nightmare.
There’s no harder mode with remixed encounters, is there? Got three levels left on nightmare and every level has played out just like normal.
Feels like a major missed opportunity if so. I want the absolute fuckery of throwing multiple marauders into the mix with all the other super demons, right from the off.
I know there’s master levels but I’m under the assumption that there’s only a set few of them.

It's weird. The encounters, I think, are possibly the best moment to moment gameplay I've ever experienced in a video game(on ultra violence at least) but I can't play more than one level at a time. I need a break because it gets so intense. It's like playing a high rank competitive match in an online FPS or something.
Or maybe I'm just trying to savor it. The game is definitely different from 2016, and I appreciate that because even when I finished 2016 I had no idea how they could top that while still being a Doom game. So they went and made a character action FPS.
I do hope they make a Quake 1 re imagining after this.

I got those vibes from 2016, they just amplified it with Eternal. The hardest thing for me to personally get my head around is the level design.
I loved how cohesive the level design of 2016 was from start to finish. Any game really that has that kind of cohesion from start to finish is doing things right in my book. With Eternal that went out the window, the levels are overall better though and more varied and yet I like it less because they're just randomly thrown together.
The gameplay though, wew. Can't get enough of it now. I actively enjoy the marauder fights. Best one is on the Taras Nabad level, near the start.
Clear out the trash mods on the bridge, open the big door and the marauder immediately throws an attack out and runs at you.
I really hope we get to play as Hayden in the DLC. Inbetween 2016 and Eternal. I think that'd be awesome, give him some fun gadgets in place of Doomslayer's hyper mobility.
I want to be Evil Optimus Prime.

I never knew a headshot on those makyr drones gave an ammo payout. Made the second to last boss fight so fucking easy compared to the first time I did it. So much more fun too.
Hit the boss with lock on rockets, jump up and punch. Headshot a few drones to restock. Rinse and repeat, absolute piece of piss.

Legit the only thing annoying about them are the little dogs. The game does an amazing job of introducing new monsters and making them seem like bosses and then half an hour later you're dispatching them like fodder despite no firepower upgrades just an upgrade in gitgud.
It's not like Mr X who actively hurts the game he's in.

TIL: They only spawn the dog if you shoot their shield. My mind is fucking blown.

I don't find it all that hard to clear out the arena prior to the Marauder spawning in, leaving only the trash mobs, of which only the one with the laser gun is a pain in the arse for shooting the shield and causing a dog to spawn. It's def something that can be played around and manipulated, freeze grenades for example.
I definitely prioritize when I enter an encounter which isn't something I can say I've had to do for a while. Once you get the super shotty, rocket launcher, and ballista you can pretty much eliminate any particularly troublesome demon the second that you want to. Like I remember Arachnitrons being an issue early, now the rare times that I see them, I just focus fire them immediately. Same with Doom Hunters.

Arachnitrons I just take the cannon off them and kill off whenever. Same for Mancubus. Cyber Manc, I try to blood punch and focus fire, but if there's faster heavy demons about I focus on those first. Like the Whiplash, Pain Elementals,or either Hell/Dread Knights or Barons.
If there's an Archvile on the scene, I'll BFG to clear the room so I can focus on downing it. Fucking hate those cunts.
Cleared the game on nightmare now. That boss fight was probably the most deaths I've had in a level throughout both play throughs. Purely because it's not as easy to keep a good balance of health/ammo when most of the fodder enemies stay on the bottom level and it feels like the floor is constantly on fire. Second phase was a lot easier than the first in that respect.
Oh yeah the minigun with the sentry mod is real good at ending a fight real quick
Which is funny cause I'm also playing doom 3 andthat minigun is trash
Which is funny cause I'm also playing doom 3 andthat minigun is trash
Barely used the minigun. Probably to my own detriment but I managed to keep enough ammo for the SSG/Balista/RL to just rotate between the three, along with grenades for probably 80% of the time. Plasma rifle got more use than the minigun even.
Mainly because of my weapon binds. I rotated between the most comfortable to select over the best weapon for the job.
Scroll up = SSG
Scroll down = Ballista
Q = Rocket Launcher
1 = Shotgun
2 = Heavy Cannon
3 = Plasma Rifle
4 = Minigun
5 = BFG
I don't think I could've gotten through nightmare on default binds. The ease of quick swapping between the SSG/Ballista with the scroll wheel was fucking essential for deleting heavy demons.
