Bells are the currency. You do... whatever strikes your fancy at the time. Things that are available at the beginning are fishing, digging, bug catching, tree shaking, tree cutting, popping balloons, planting, and talking to your neighbors. I may have forgotten a few things.

I found the polygon guide that Linius posted earlier in the thread. Is it worth following, or should I explore shit by myself instead of following it?
