By Kibner Go To PostIt looks like, over the last 20 years, first round picks outside the top 10 tend to have similar production outcomes (as measured by VORP) as vet-minimum contracts. This means that teams should generally not be looking for 'need' outside the top 10 as you can get that same production with a vet-minimum.
Drafting for 'fit' can be fine as long as you define 'fit' as fitting in with the team's system and philosophy.
By DY_nasty Go To Postalways go BPA
never draft miles bridges
By Kibner Go To PostI guess this also kinda gets into what BPA actually means. Are you looking for the player who is more likely toI think a mixture of both is what is needed...
- have the best career, overall?
- have the best career over the next 3-4 years?
- be at least a quality starter over the next 3-4 years?
- be a star or superstar?
You never want to take best fit over best player, Portland sadly is an example of this move twice, MJ was passed on because the had Clyde and didn't think they could work them together.. and Oden to a lesser degree was taken because you can't teach height and I suspect because they had Roy at the time.. and both of those failed horribly.. so if you are in the position to take the almost for best player at that pick you most likely should do so...
But have seen where drafting for fit works when players are very near each other in talent.. like Webber getting traded for Penny. I would argue that Webber was the best talent without a doubt but Penny was not Sam Bowie or Miles Bridges as far as talent level was concerned and it worked out for the Magic..
Basically you should never reach for fit... and if you are reaching then either trade or BPA

James drives to the lane for a contested layup, but it doesn’t fall. He screams, “That’s a foul!” to a nearby official as he scurries back on defense. A foul is called. It’s a reach on the Lakers.
“That’s the same sh– that happened on that end,” James argues.
His voice, which travels well, is his main weapon of choice as the loudest player on the court. He’s calling out the Magic’s sets before they’ve set up, calling out defensive assignments and fraternizing with the officials.
Alex Caruso subs in for James midway through the opening quarter, and 30 seconds later, the Magic bring in a fresh body.
“No. 7 is all drive!” James yells from the bench to his teammates, referring to newly inserted Michael Carter-Williams. “He’s all drive.”
Carter-Williams glances over at James, but doesn’t say anything back. He finishes 0-for-5 from 3-point range.
I don't feel like reading this and SI's downward spiral precludes me from trusting them on the face of things so I don't fully trust the headline here but it is probably all true, anyway, because people are terrible: https://www.si.com/nba/2020/07/29/mavericks-sexual-assault-allegation
I actually find that hard to believe.
Tin foil hat time, but I find it easier to believe they would suppress positive results so they could get the playoffs in.
