cases here jumped from 0 on Thursday to a potential about 100 today, no deaths yet but most infected are old people so it's sadly only a matter of timr
lol fr tho. aite
By /sy Go To PostI was listening to a Planet Money episode on the outbreak market. Pretty interesting stuff. They were pretty close to a SARS vaccine then the virus just disappeared.spooky
I can totally picture him saying fake news to a camera and then freaking out behind closed doors. All these congress people are old. Fucking Matt Geatz out there with a gas mask a week ago and today he's self quarantining and that dude is young as fuck by congressional standards.

This man loony my god
Whelp there is a case in my hospital while I am on vacation so thats great canāt wait to get back to work on Wednesday.
I think it's safe to assume it's pretty much everywhere or getting there, folks just aren't getting tested and many are shrugging it off due to flu season or the onset of spring allergies. Lord knows I've been sneezing and coughing and getting all the side eyes cause trees are in bloom. If the symptoms really are as lowkey as they say for some people it's not like you're gonna go the hospital and depending on the state they won't fucking test you anyway.
By Fenderputty Go To PostThe data between countries regarding death rates seems fairly consistent if there's a high amount of testing going on.Was listening to a podcast today discussing how a totalitarian vs a democratic state can handle these things. Sometimes you just need some order and decisivenessš¤·āāļøš¤·āāļø
Like I get what you're saying, but we SHOULD be handling this better than Italy or China, right? RIGHT?
it helps generally caring about an epidemic and ignoring what it's doing to the market because dead people or even more people under quarantine/in hospitals can't buy shit anyway
The symptoms are not that lowkey and so far seem fairly straight forward...
The fact that hospitals won't test people worried they are coughing or whatever is ridiculous

and the market getting slapped this hard internationally is very bad. real bad.
By blackace Go To PostThe symptoms are not that lowkey and so far seem fairly straight forwardā¦i mean you COULD receive everyone who shows symptoms
The fact that hospitals won't test people worried they are coughing or whatever is ridiculous
but those symptoms aren't blindness, shitting blood, or something so obvious that they're a stark departure from other stuff you see any other time.
You SHOULD receive anyone who comes in with a symptom and a concern. I mean they turning away people with high fevers because they haven't had it long enough and other dumb shit.
You gotta wonder how many infected people they have turned away

Work may have to do contingency planning in the coming weeks. Depends what the feds say since we are technically a public non-profit.
On the education side, my school said they may do remote lectures and also exams somehow. Genuinely wondering HOW on the latter when exam security is always mad strict.

It's a screening but not the one people expect.

Not to throw shade at the VF article, but..
Is Trump the kind of dude dumb enough to think the media is intentionally trying to give him corona virus, while also being dumb enough to not care he just spent several days and AF1 trip with Matt Gaetz (who was directly exposed to corona virus), while also being dumb enough to not think corona virus is a big deal?
Well, yeah, come to think of it.

Other than quarantine everyone with a fever, whatcha gonna do without the ability to test?
Those criteria we agree are stupid are there because of our inability

It's called gut government services and privatize where possible and give my friends lucrative contracts
By reilo Go To PostOr don't give a shit in cases like Hurricane KatrinaWell during Katrina you had a great FEMA leader in Michael Brown
Just like this administration has great leaders in the Secretaries of Education, Housing and Urban Development, Labor, on and on
Well the right especially just loves putting people in who are antithetical to the job they're supposed to be doing. EPA - fuck the environment. Education - fuck that. Labor - unions can fuck off and basic employee protections can EAD. etc
By blackace Go To PostThat's incompetence not inability. j/s š¤·š¾āāļøguys pls
a hurricane is one thing. the thought of north korea giving no fucks about slanging some war crime shit across the border is another.
planning for an earthquake/flood/singular event type of disaster is one of many parts of national relief polices :/ its not about money, its about immediate and effective mobility - and for many options to be actionable, existing plans need to be in place or readily adaptable to fit a set fixture of circumstances.
the fact that corona virus isn't something outrageously fatal is giving the world a hell of a lot to learn from moving forward /couldbeworse

Iām going with, āthereās no money in itā. I get DYās argument, but i find it kinda lacking. We have the biggest armed services in the world supposedly because weāre a big target at the top. Weāre also isolated by an ocean, so terrorism like dirty bombs and biological warfare seem like they should be part of that calculus.

I mean it's not just the US who is handling this piss poorly despite having data that basically has said this would happen if we had a virus like corona... you would think that SARS and ebola would had been enough of a scared to at least pretend to be prepared.

Nah Americans are stupid and use past containment of viruses as a reason not to worry about the next one. All you see is folk saying stuff like "This is nothing just like zika, ebola or sars!" like they're mad someone warned them or that there wasn't a pandemic.

By /sy Go To PostI was listening to a Planet Money episode on the outbreak market. Pretty interesting stuff. They were pretty close to a SARS vaccine then the virus just disappeared.
Let's clarify one thing: SARS (SARS CoV) is a strain of corona virus. Corona virus (COVID19) is also known as SARS-CoV2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2). SARS didn't disappear, they simply found ways to eliminate it and there are drugs and compounds out there that are in use if the disease shows up. And some of these drugs are showing promise to actually being effective on COVID19 due to their similarity with the 2003 SARS.

Money is still incompetent. At least within the capacity to govern.
Ultimately I think Iām pissed because it seems obvious our response to this had been poor on a lot of fucking levels.
Getting these things right takes time.
The Seattle-area nursing home at the epicenter of one of the biggest coronavirus outbreaks in the United States said on Monday it had no kits to test 65 employees showing symptoms of the respiratory illness that has killed at least 13 patients at the long-term care center.
The staff in question, representing more than a third of the Life Care Centerās 180 employees, are out sick with symptoms consistent with coronavirus, and a federal strike team of nurses and doctors is helping to care for 53 patients remaining in the center.
With the facility in the Seattle suburb of Kirkland accounting for more than half of the known U.S. coronavirus deaths, and all its patients tested, it was unclear why Life Care lacked diagnostic kits for staff, even as the University of Washington offered to process test samples for them.
āWe would like more kits to test employees,ā Life Care Center spokesman Tim Killian told reporters, adding he did not know why they had not been forthcoming.
āWeāve been asking the various government agencies that have been supplying us with test kits.ā
