(it's not fun)
I do wonder other than the typical age/immuno compromised issues how many with the most severe responses were/are smokers.
Apparently there are multiple strands now.... One that may cause meningitis.

In the other thread I asked if it was wrong that I didn't go to the bagel shop since it was Chinese owned, and it turns out I was right and wrong not to go there. That bagel shop is in the Wykagyl section of New Rochelle and less than a quarter mile from where the Young Israel temple. That's a shopping area with a lot of foot traffic from people who are now in the hot spot of the transmission in NY. That said, it's gonna spread into NYC if it hasn't already since New Rochelle is so close, and just based off where it is now I'd expect Scarsdale next as well as towns/cities up and down the New Haven metro north line.
Just got back home and have begun my quarantine. Passed through SEA and JFK. Seattle traffic was non existent and the foot traffic was incredibly low.

Is it a different strain? The difference in mortality rate between Italy/Iran and South Korea is eye opening.

By You got 14 bricks right there? Go To PostIs it a different strain? The difference in mortality rate between Italy/Iran and South Korea is eye opening.south korea is testing thousands of people a day which means they detect a lot of mild cases or people not showing any symptoms while other places only test the people that are really sick.
if italy had the testing capabilities that south korea has they would find tens of thousands of more people having it.
By Laboured Go To PostDifference in the age profiles of those that are catching it too.i mean that's probably linked to italy and iran not testing healthy 20 year olds but korea does.

And by handled he means, "we've not tested people and our confirmed cases is underrepresented."
My favorite thing is trumpers saying "this is just a hoax, it's not any worse than a standard flu" and then referencing data that makes it way worse than the standard flu because they're morons who failed math.
We're likely in the 1200-2K infected and growing # based on deaths.

if bloomberg gave everyone a million they could afford math classes.
By Fenderputty Go To PostAnd by handled he means, "we've not tested people and our confirmed cases is underrepresented."That's not what I mean really. Italy was headed towards some mass quarantine type shit before this came into play with how strongly their anti vax movement was. Communities not reporting shit/trusting the government or trying to sprinkle crystals on the virus probably contributed.

Also, if people want to stop the "its >/< the flu" stuff they need to do a better job. On any outlet or article, they're doing nothing but describing severe flu like symptoms. That's not good enough if you're trying to effectively scare people in a certain direction anywhere. I mean shit, we scared people out of not smoking with a flood of commercials featuring nice old ladies speaking out of their necks next to gravestones. Go hard or go home if you're trying to scare people into compliance.
22 death / .02 = 1,100 infections using China's fatally rate.
22 death / .007 = 3,140 infections using SK fatality rate
22 death / .001 = 22K infections if this were just like the actual flu
Nobody know where we are cause we're not testing and putting up fabricated numbers so steady markets. Assuming no more than 22 people have died, our total infections is likely way higher. Only way that isn't possible is if we just got super unlucky and only old sick people are catching this so far.

By Fenderputty Go To Post22 death / .02 = 1,100 infections using China's fatally rate.you can't flat data disaster relief/response like that when there is almost no uniformity between how countries are responding to this internally. some countries are willing to go to certain extremes and have the ability to do so when others can't. for example, sk will round up a church leader responsible for sheltering and not reporting victims. iran is obviously NOT gonna just quickly clean out a religious site.

and yeah testing is just one part of all this. reception to information along with its effective dissemination among individuals, proper controls, care facility capacity/capability (which is NOT uniform anywhere. an american ambulance is fucking voltron compared to the emergency response vehicles elsewhere), luck, etc
its not a simple equation that allows such easy blame. especially not at this point. fatality rate as well just kinda ignores treatment/triage nuances altogether.

The data between countries regarding death rates seems fairly consistent if there's a high amount of testing going on.
Like I get what you're saying, but we SHOULD be handling this better than Italy or China, right? RIGHT?
By Fenderputty Go To PostThe data between countries regarding death rates seems fairly consistent if there's a high amount of testing going on.disaster relief and pandemic control is a billion dollar field man. i'm not gonna diminish it by saying its that simple lol

the numbers need more of a story than such a flat comparison can give. a nursing home is probably going to take the hit harder than a bunch of active, frequent travelers. a cruise ship may provide more favorable conditions than other areas. if what blackace said was accurate, japan idiotically recalled a lot of their people without screening them properly - they could've just been really lucky or unlucky as far as anyone knows.
this picture is a long way from being painted as far as response goes. identifying specific missteps is probably better than x > y at this point and near future
i don't particularly like the gentle approach to this overall but modern problems need modern solutions i guess
