One of the guys in my departments got sick. His doctor told him he thinks it might be a false negative and to quarantine for 10 days. He called the store manager 5 days in saying he feels better. He's coming back Saturday.

Just read an article over at purple gaf about a guy in Oregon knowingly going to work sick and causing it to spread where 7 people died. Whether he was like your coworker who decides to go in or felt he had to because American work culture is the worst, we’re all fucked.

When did he first start feeling symptoms? A 10 day isolation for a Covid infection would start on that day.
What kind of test? Antigen false negatives on symptomatic people are rare but molecular tests are pretty close to impossible.
Someone at my dad's work has been going in for a week despite his wife having confirmed covid. What a dipshit.
Spending my Christmas away from my entire family because my sister got covid (she works retail and didn't wear a mask all year because her boss is a denier and wasn't enforcing it on employees or customers) and infected literally everybody. Except me, I escaped because we haven't been on good terms for a couple years.
Merry Christmas, y'all.

This isn't for people to modify their behaviors but it might make you feel a a bit less anxiety if you are required to be around people who don't have any signs of sickness.
edit: literally couldn't find a twitter article that wasn't politically aligned so I had to just link the news article.

Today was the best Christmas ever, though. I didn't have to go anywhere, didn't have to see anyone, and it was all over. I sent some gift cards over email, got a couple the same way, made one single phone call... fucking hell yeah.
Last year, I still didn't see anyone on Christmas, but that was only because my parents dictated that Christmas would happen in early January when my brother, sister-in-law, and niece came down from parts unknown. So while other folks at least got the bullshit out of the way on 12/25, I had to wait until after New Year's to feel free.
Goddamn, I wish Christmas wasn't a thing.

Oxford vaccine presumably being approved this week, and I saw a paywalled article on the Belfast Telegraph that some GP surgeries have already taken delivery of it. Here's a bit of a long read from Reuters on the screw up of the trials.
From the FT:
From the FT:
Some involved in the process believe that the MHRA could approve a single shot of the AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine in an effort to create some initial immunity among the population. This plan was proposed by Tony Blair, the former UK prime minister, last week.
In an article in the Independent, Mr Blair argued that even the first dose would “provide substantial immunity, with full effectiveness coming with a second dose two to three months later — longer than originally thought”.
If this interval between doses is confirmed by the MHRA this week, it could pave the way to a faster rollout in the knowledge that more doses could be manufactured in time to maintain the vaccination schedule, with no need to hold back part of the initial supply.
Pascal Soriot, chief executive of AstraZeneca, said on Sunday that new data stated their vaccine was as effective as BioNTech/Pfizer’s jabs. “We think we have figured out the winning formula and how to get efficacy that, after two doses, is up there with everybody else,” he told the Sunday Times.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/dec/28/russia-admits-to-world-third-worst-covid-19-death-toll-underreported
Russia said on Monday that its coronavirus death toll was more than three times higher than it had previously reported, making it the country with the third-largest number of fatalities.
Redfield and Azar had swung around to the idea that cutting off European travel might buy time, but Steven Mnuchin, the Treasury Secretary, heatedly insisted that doing so would cripple the U.S. economy and trigger a global depression. The markets would crater. “Forget about ballgames!” he said, pointedly adding, “Forget about campaign rallies!”
Mnuchin demanded data. He felt that the U.S. just had to live with the virus. It wasn’t worth sacrificing the airlines, the cruise ships, the hotels. “This is going to bankrupt everyone,” he said. “Boeing won’t sell a single jet.”Fucking evil cunt
Holy shit, 40 thousand cases yesterday in UK!
The death rate in 1-2 weeks time is gonna be brutal.

Keep in mind that, when the virus started spreading back in April, Italy had the double the amount of cases UK had with far fewer deaths.
It will be ugly here in UK.

By faridmon Go To PostTrust, Despite all that, The handling of the virus and the stupidity of the English will make the situation much worse than anywhere else in Europe. The UK, like New York and Sweden, saw much higher deaths for pretty much one reason - they sent sick COVID patients back to care homes. Now that that stupidity has been handled, death rates are similar to every other nation. Don't be overly worried, and continue to be careful and it's unlikely that anything terrible will happen

Maybe some positive news, if the vaccine is having an effect before the 28 day period is up:
Nursing homes in NI were 50% vaccinated by the 23rd and there had consistently been outbreaks in 100+ nursing homes for all of the pandemic.

Reminds me of the fun times when my whole country was in quarantine for two months. Police hours from 5 PM to 5 AM on workdays, all day on the weekends.
At least I managed to beat KH3 in that time period.
By reilo Go To PostThe point being that you've been downplaying the fuck out of this pandemic and it's outright dumb and/or dangerous. It's true that France saw significantly higher infection rates without seeing a spike in deaths
You legit told a forum member to go catch COVID on purpose.
It's true that the UK is currently vaccinating 200'000 people per week, hitting 800'000 so far with another vaccine due to be approved shortly
It's true that 40% of COVID deaths can be attributed to the ~1.6mil population of 85+ in the UK, a group that will almost all have had a vaccination within a few weeks. It's also true that 75% of fatalities occur in the 75+ age group, which accounts for ~6mil of the UK population and is feasible to be vaccinated in 1-2 months.
It's true that understanding of effective treatments has seen a ~33% reduction in ICU deaths that was initially seen
It's true that regional spikes in deaths can be traced back to care home decisions and as these have not been repeated in the winter, death rates have normalized across regions. The UK, for example, is currently doing slightly better than Spain and Italy, and slightly worse than France, but all are quite close.
It's true that for those under 50, the coronavirus is not merely 'like the flu', it is in fact even less dangerous than the flu, with a lower death rate. It's also true that there remains no studies demonstrating 'long covid' as a real effect and not merely standard post-viral syndrome + hysteria. As such, willingly seeking infection contributes about as many micro-morts as regularly riding a motorcycle.
The pandemic has provoked doomering on an unprecedented scale, and given that anxiety is quite common and most likely heightened at the moment, I don't think that correcting the often exaggerated claims of risk stands as dumb and or dangerous.
