I think it's more that they're scared shitless of the "liberal media" label and they'll bend over backwards not to offend conservatives, despite the fact that conservatives will never ever give them the benefit of the doubt.
Edit: That's not to say the power brokers at the very top of corporate media wouldn't be interested in maintaining the status quo, I just don't think the reporters and editorial staff think in such terms.
