By reilo Go To PostYou can't even get a regular ass COVID test result within 10 days and you want reliable anti-body tests? You're literally asking for too much.Yes, because the FDA hasn't approved them yet (which people are giving them shit for "too much red tape" again.)
An antigen test is not an antibody test and vastly different than the complex PCR tests, an approved reliable one would greatly help the testing situation. It's really not asking too much, especially because it will happen.
How many people from all those Big 12, Big 10 and Pac 12 states are among those 250k bikers in Sturgis, South Dakota this weekend? A town of 7,000 is going to get real interesting I'd say in about 10-12 days.

By reilo Go To PostYou can't even get a regular ass COVID test result within 10 days and you want reliable anti-body tests? You're literally asking for too much.Is this true? We can go and get one for about $60 USD and get told in 24 hours what your result is here.
We have reached 28 days covid-19 free. Border closure has been extended to October 1st.
By Lunatic Go To PostIs this true? We can go and get one for about $60 USD and get told in 24 hours what your result is here.Just depends on where you are. I really only very well about where i live, and 70% of tests are from labs that return results in 1.7 days or less, 19% of labs return results in just over 2 days and one lab (5% of tests) returned results in 3.7 days but there are also some ridiculous outliers. This also lines up from my anecdotal evidence.

I mean, college players have it largely made financially and are old enough to make educated decisions about the risks of playing during a pandemic

I heard on the radio this morning that your average middle of the road college football school will lose 90 million of they donāt play. So think of what an SEC school stands to lose.

So think of what an SEC school stands to lose.middle of the road college teams typically lose money from their programs anyways. football is a hell of a lot harder to pay for than other sports as well... and if some of these schools go belly up when it comes to their sports programs? good.

By Nonja Go To Postwtf? How did college sports get so big in the US?College sports are the only place in America where you will find semi decent rivalries.
Its easy to market the system when many of the top schools are in areas that don't enjoy pro sports, or much of anything really.

By Nonja Go To Postwtf? How did college sports get so big in the US?Indoctrination.
Football somewhere along the line became more important than education. It's all a facade.
most other countries have professional sport teams they can just go see for like $30 a ticket, hell some colleges just have teams in the country's normal pro leagues. plus there's countries that don't really have enough colleges to make a league between them
By reilo Go To PostIndoctrination.being a good sports school did turn some colleges around completely.... but that pretty much completely died in the 90s

Most other countries also don't tie any of their sports to education and have a proper amateur system sponsored either by the city or by the local sports franchise.
In America, sports is huge at the high school level as well. It's why something like Friday Night Lights can even exist as a concept.
Plus, there's the whole racism angle but that's another subject about why NCAA sucks.

By reilo Go To PostIf you see a resume come across your desk with a row that says "Bachelors from FSU", what conclusions do you come to?its a big ass school and monstrous alumni network tho. even alabama is nothing to joke at - they run their entire state and mo I don't think there are any specialized sports schools like that anymore... they've all been poached out or flatout crushed. Rutgers was halfway there and died for its transgressions. UConn tried to step into football money and paid the price. Mid-majors get their staff snatched up before they can build anything that can hold ground.
i'll say that no one was checking for baylor before RG3 though - and that's a common thing (that's not sustained as much these days). Schools that make it to the big time and stay there get huge bumps in enrollment and money to go along with the success. And slide backwards when it leaves.
I mean shit, who was checking for Miami before they won big in the 90s? who thought clemon was anything more than a second chance school until 6 years ago? sports success is dream that not only players buy but schools too
UNC Charlotte bet the farm on football making them a national brand. Curious to see how it plays out

The US doesn't really have any lower level leagues for its big sports, either, does it? I know there's the minors in Baseball, but as far as I'm aware there is no lower level of NFL or NBA. I always thought the college sports system basically functioned the same way that the lower tiers of Football work in the UK. And given that the UK has a fraction of the US's pop and economy, yet still supports 5 tiers of professional football (and 3 tiers of pro rugby union and 2 tiers of pro rugby league) it's no surprise that US college sports can be really huge
By Xpike Go To Postmost cities in america dont have NFL teams anywhere near themYeah as someone who lived in an area that had 0 professional teams to now has everything but the MLB (but has multiple minor league teams) this is a big part of it. Without a real minor league for basketball or football college sports took hold. NFL and NBA encourages it because it is a free developmental league for them. And for the colleges they like it because they are so underfunded it allows them to make money exploiting the athletes for free.

They just run on their own and are pretty shoddily ran in general.
College is our real minor league. The pro āminorā leagues are for all the players that werenāt good enough coming out of college
As schools face the daunting challenge of reopening while the coronavirus continues to spread, at least 97,000 children around the United States tested positive in the last two weeks of July, according to a new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Childrenās Hospital Association. It says that at least 338,000 children had tested positive through July 30, meaning more than a quarter tested positive in just those two weeks.

By reilo Go To PostIf you see a resume come across your desk with a row that says "Bachelors from FSU", what conclusions do you come to?The proper reference to make for that would be something like FGCU or Boise. All these giant state schools that are known for sports also lead the country in some form of academics or research.
Except maybe Arizona and Arizona State...
