Linesman were supposed to give advantage to attackers, but in reality they always did the opposite (fewer people complaining when wrong.)
I think it's a dumb compromise to the rule, but the current VAR system is not trustworthy as it is so more room for them to draw proper lines could at least guarantee better spots.
