I remember being in college back before a lot of you kids were born, and my microeconomics professor told me about a woman he knew who was on her way to getting a PhD in finance and got a 100,000/year offer to teach Finance... and turned it down.
My brain couldn't handle it.

By reilo Go To Post$100k/yr in the finance sector doesn't seem that much?
Wasn't thinking about that. My brain was thinking 40K was a dream, I couldn't fathom turning down 100K.
Same thing happened when I was at UNC-Charlotte, living on campus, and my RA (english major) said he turned down a 48K per year job. Thought he was absolutely insane.
I guess when you grow up lower middle class, and all your friends are getting stuff and you aren't, it hits different.

with a phd in finance i wouldn't even pick up the phone for that much...
By sy Go To PostWhat qualifies as lower middle class because I assumed making 40-50k was that, you gotta adjust for old af with pac-12
By FortuneFaded Go To PostTo teach it, right after graduating? It is.Sure but sounds like she used her PhD to good use and realized that's not enough for her long-term earning potential.
By sy Go To PostWhat qualifies as lower middle class because I assumed making 40-50k was that,
We're talking 80s and 90s, sy. 40K today doesn't go as far today as it did back then.
To put it in perspective, the 48K job offer I heard about was in 97, so that would be 77500 today. And the 100K offer was in 1998, and would be 159K today.

This brightened my spirits immensely
^And finance back then? pfft
By i can get you a toe Go To PostChances are she already was teaching too and had enough of that.Don't know about that but its certainly an earning potential thing. Very few careers should 'start' with teaching.
By DY_nasty Go To PostDon't know about that but its certainly an earning potential thing. Very few careers should 'start' with teaching.Oh for sure, I meant that in terms of academia and getting that far you're rarely just a student that whole time. And if you're a TA you just end up teaching the class for a professor that's busy writing books and trying to get tenure.
By reilo Go To PostI didn't realize Pac's best kept secret was that he was old enough to be Blackace's father
AKA: Fender just got comparatively younger whew!
I'm not in finance, but my major was part of the business school at UNC-Greensboro, so I had a bunch of related classes.
Though I do work at a bank, so I guess I'm technically in the vicinity of it.

By Facism Go To Postyeh time only seems to accelerate as you get older. Disgusting.I always hated it when grown ups said that when I was young. Thinking all things that were still magical at the time would lose their spark and unless you constantly get new experiences in, everything would feel like repetition.
By DY_nasty Go To PostHow many of you guys are teachers?I am. We had homicides the past two years. We still make a difference.
Sick to my stomach with that stuff. I'd rather be further down the line than right there looking unequipped parents in the eyes again. Anyone who can do that without twisting themselves up is solid though.
Even looking back, I think most of the good teachers I had only gave me that extra attention because I didn't come with a headache.
College grated me too. There was so much enthusiasm towards getting us to give back to the community and all I could see was the dropout and transfer rate. Felt like they were selling kids rap and hoop dreams all over again except they were making us come out of pocket for it.

A third of my colleagues bailed at the end of the year. It's just a rough situation. I'm staying because I've been useful, but I won't be able to keep up that level of involvement forever. The worst part is the killers hang around the entrance of the HS because they're not 18 yet so they're awaiting trial and just being nuisances.
got a feeling i'll be unemployed by thanksgiving.
the company's biz is just not picking up since sports/schools are still on hold for the most part. surprisingly my own client flow was relatively unharmed by coronavirus.
not really the worst thing because it'd give me a couple months to full time search (outside of local stuff) as my lease runs out

The American education system sounds like a hellscape especially for minorities.

Crowns are a funny thing. Dentists settle for crowns to avoid pissing people off who might really need an extraction and implant instead from what I've seen.

By Yurtlicious Go To Posthad to buy uv glasses for work since I'm getting awful migrainesNice! I had to do similar for some contract work I did a few years ago. Had to be in an office where they used bright fluorescent lights which didn't flash fast enough for my eyes/brain. Kept getting terrible headaches. Ended up getting the non-polarized version of this particular pair: https://www.theraspecs.com/wrap-theraspecs/

It made me look goofy as hell because I wanted my peripheral vision protected, too, but no more painful headaches for the 45-60 minute drive home!
