By Daz Go To PostThe one great thing about WFH is the ability to get those 10 minute nap recharges.
I just go and interrupt the cats' sleep every once in a while.
10mins? Try 2 hours. Being on audit means I work all random times of night and day. I feel like a zombie at all times.
Woke up 12:30am today lol

By Kibner Go To PostWhen I called the office to see if I could mail or do it online, they told me it had to be filed in person. Maybe they were wrong, though. Wouldn't be the first time. They had to see if you were a minority, duh
By Daz Go To PostThe one great thing about WFH is the ability to get those 10 minute nap recharges. Not gonna lie though, I think I might be ready to go back to the office. WFH is getting kinda old.
By MonadL Go To PostNot gonna lie though, I think I might be ready to go back to the office. WFH is getting kinda old.You say that now until that one day when in traffic and you fucking hate it
Guys if you can WFH please stay home. I enjoy minimal traffic as someone who can’t WFH.
Eventually your kids will be back in school and you’ll be able to go out so you’ll have peace of mind and places to go once you’re tired of your house.

Homes of the future will have to have workspaces in mind.
By Daz Go To PostIn a vacuum where restaurants, bars, gyms and cinemas are shut, it feel old. BUt its the way forward.in what ways will that differ from simply turning a room in your home into a home office?

By /sy Go To Postin what ways will that differ from simply turning a room in your home into a home office?Probably wall and door material to block out sounds, same with windows and maybe even room placement (i.e. away from the road and laundry room).
By /sy Go To Postin what ways will that differ from simply turning a room in your home into a home office?I would say Access points to internet, phone and electronic power access for printers, extra monitors, and computers. - These at current tend to be the reserve of the living room and entertainment rooms./areas.
Soundproofing for outside traffic during Teams calls. etc.
I remember coming home with all my equipment and having to re-wire my entire room.
A lot of working groups and advisory groups have found natural light to be a great stimulant and psychologically beneficial.
So stuff like that, it seems small, but it makes a difference.
Mainly liking WFH still tbh. Hour extra sleep, finish earlier, save a decent chunk of money, can do house tasks during the day, can actually take delivery of stuff during the day (which we can't usually do cus they need to be buzzed into the building) are all gud things imo.
Dig tf out of WFH. Way more productive.
Dread going back into the office because just getting in is going to be a hassle. Work in a giant building with many other companies there and you know they’re gonna do some one person per elevator shite. Commuting itself is fine I can just bike to work.

By /sy Go To Postin what ways will that differ from simply turning a room in your home into a home office?Lots of homes barely have wall outlets as is nor the proper amperage on a particular breaker/circuit to deal with more load in a given space. Especially if that space was built with merely a lamp and alarm clock in mind not multiple computers, printers, copy/fax. Folks gonna be tripping their shit left and right.
Don't lack of outlets and sound proofing already have pretty cheap fixes? Extension cables, outlet strips, those wall pads, etc.
WFH been pretty good, can wake up 5 minutes before my shift, no wasting 2 hours every day going to and from work, no AC on all day, can do chores during the day, can use my lunch for actual shit I want to do, honestly don't know how they're going to convince us that going back to an office building will be for our own good
By /sy Go To PostDon't lack of outlets and sound proofing already have pretty cheap fixes? Extension cables, outlet strips, those wall pads, etc.You really don't want to be running shit on extension cables if you can help it or even a surge protector. Some stuff absolutely requires a wall outlet like a paper shredder or higher end printer. What people should invest in is a UPS but you can't run everything off that either.
It's been fine. I dread having to commute again TBH. Even though I was probably more active overall, I've been able to maintain a consistent exercise schedule by being flexible. It's nice to sleep in, and working out after you get home from a commute just sucks.

Sound insulating a room isn't cheap at all. Especially if you want the room to not look ugly. The door in particular is a problem point. Sound insulating windows ain't cheap, either.
And, yeah, a lot of outlets ain't made with high power devices in mind. Surge protectors are of limited use, too. Much better (and honestly cheaper in the long run) to get the house a ground pole to prevent damage to electronic devices.
UPS's are mandatory, imo, for anyone working from home. Need your PC and all your networking gear (modem, router, and switches) connected to some UPS. And you want to at least get a sin-wave UPS, too, in order to prevent potential compatibility problems. And they ain't exactly cheap, either.
But they also aren't the "always running on battery power" UPS expensive, either. Those are more of a business lab thing, anyway. Partially due to how much noise they make.

Where i can see WFH being an issue is spots prone to tornado warnings. tropical storms and thunderstorms too. Most people don't have the resources to ensure that their electronics don't get fried and basically have to stop whatever they're doing and find appropriate shelter.
By Laboured Go To PostDo you guys get bad power outages or surges or something?See above.
I've dealt with a lot of brownouts and power outages over the years due to storms and poor infrastructure. I've had to try to isolate myself from those issues since I've been WFH for several years now. Even a single blip in power due to someone fucking up when doing maintenance on a power line can cause damage and lost/corrupted work. I don't risk it.
By DY_nasty Go To Postpower goes out at work all the time too ijs save often regardless lolI'm more worried about my power going out in the middle of my computer writing to disk, corrupting data. Or something weird happening when I'm transmitting files to/from a server.

BACK IN MY DAY we ain't have no damn laptops. and if we did, the whole office had to share it - and we had to be smart. couldn't use the printer, the laptop, and the phone at the same time either.
By Kibner Go To PostVery same on constant saving. Ctrl+S was the first hotkey I ever learned. Use it by reflex anytime I finish a "thought" in my work.Learned this in grad school the hard way. Got in a good work flow and lost three hours of work because I forgot to save. Never again.
By Daz Go To PostBe sure to save on a local drive - I learned that lesson the hard way.I save locally and have it backup remotely automatically. And also, since I do software development, do multiple check-ins with my work so I have a revision history to fall back on, just in case I fuck something up in an intermediary process.
FUCK YOU SHAREPOINT!

On a Netflix job we did, we installed a UPS system for the building to supplant power in an outage. They had capacity to keep up limited operations for like 30 min. They had a small data center in there.
Big data center usually do it different. A generator by code has like 10 seconds to take on load for emergency systems. Think like in a hospital. So a UPS can be used to supplant power for that 10 seconds for super critical stuff.
Regarding outlets in residential, I believe if you don’t have a ground wire you can just install GFCI. Unless your electronics needs “clean power”, the GFCI trips on short. So it provides safety and short protection. Make sure to verify outlet amperage and circuit amperage.

I thought he might find the large commercial data center / ups stuff interesting.
The outlet thing was addictive. My brother in laws house is so old he has no ground wire 😬
Thinking back, I don’t think anyone has a dedicated circuit for their electronics in residential
I control s on habit since i had pirated shitty/buggy adobe suite products for years.
