Probably at night and when he's alone.
Personally I wouldn't even bother trying to coax him out, will likely scare him more. Just leave a bowl of food nearby. Gaining trust might take a while at that age, you probably won't be going straight from him recognising that he relies on you for food to letting you pick him up. It took our 11 year old a few weeks to warm up to my Nan when she moved in, now they're inseperable.

In all seriousness my gf & i have had loads of cats & everyone is different. If they're nervous just stay in the room with them whenever you can, leave food out, don't make loud noises & they'll eventually learn to trust you. When your cat comes out from the tv & it's had it's food try playing a few games with it, something as simple as a piece of string will do the trick. If it still seems nervous try a Feliway plugin diffuser, it releases smells that'll chill them out.
