I thought DeSantis or someone said that people who needed to pay those fines were not allowed to have someone else pay them on their behalf?

They dislike it, don’t reveal “can’t”
Bloomberg promised a hell of a lot more than “raising money”
Also lololol even Romney’s like nah we’re seating this judge. Votes will be in the mail when this happens
Romney was never going to sit this one out. they can hate trump as much as they want but a 6-3 SCOTUS is a wet dream no matter who is president.

By Perfect Blue Go To PostFor those of you who aren't following Canadian politics due to all the other fuckery happening right now in the world, we are in the midst of some shit that y'all might find interesting.Well, quite a bit has happened since this update.
Trudeau is proroguing parliament until October in hopes of "resetting" the current minority government's agenda. Rumours are pointing to some massive investments and social reform coming up but no one is actually sure what will be in the government's next throne speech (basically outlining the agenda for the next year or so).
However, there's more to it. Trudeau and his government are in the midst of the WE Charity scandal. The gist of the scandal is that WE Charity, who won the government contract to administer a summer grant program for students during COVID-19, paid thousands in speaking fees to Trudeau's mother and brother. They're also accused of paying exorbitant travel and other expenses for Trudeau's wife during her "unpaid volunteering" time with the charity. The charity is run by two brothers, Mark and Craig Kielburger who are pretty big in terms of global charities. They had a hearing with parliament and a committee investigating the affairs and the brothers came off like a bunch of twats. Wouldn't be surprised if this brings more scrutiny to them and more scandals or dodgy dealings are uncovered.
Now, the main opposition, the Conservatives, are in the midst of a leadership election and can barely find ways to stay in the news. Trudeau's daily COVID-19 briefings that ended a few weeks ago gave him many minutes of free air time while the opposition has been mostly irrelevant and trying to (prematurely) bring back in-person parliamentary sessions. They are accusing Trudeau's government of hypocrisy for being against Harper's proroguing of parliament a decade or so ago, and of attempting to shut down scrutiny of the WE scandal. All pretty legitimate critiques. The opposition needs to do something to counteract Trudeau because his polling continues to go up and is easily in majority government territory. However, no one is going to want to force an early election for many reasons - Trudeau especially - the public would punish the party electorally if they're seen as forcing an election during COVID-19 to grab more power. The other parties can't afford an election in general, particularly the NDP, the main left-wing party in parliament.
The social reform stuff is being seen as an attempt to placate other parties in parliament like the NDP and Bloc Quebecois, who are left-wing on economics, to help keep Trudeau in power. It remains to be seen what they'll actually attempt to do in the next throne speech. Just the other day, Trudeau's beleaguered finance minister Bill Morneau resigned (who was also involved in the WE scandal…) and was mostly a corporate suit out of his depth. His replacement is Chrystia Freeland, who was the minister of Foreign Affairs, the deputy prime minister, and was in charge of Canada's negotiation team for the revised NAFTA agreement, and is widely seen as a possibility to succeed Trudeau as PM. She's also much more on the left compared to Morneau and has an activist streak to her.
First, the WE scandal. The Brothers Kielburger have resigned from the charity lol. WE is also ceasing all of its activities in Canada. What a turn around from a few weeks ago. The charity's credibility has been shot due to claims of political gamesmanship and cronyism and who knows if it will ever come back. Credibility is really the most important currency for a charity and if they don't have it? Good luck with that.
Trudeau himself is waiting and biding his time until September 23rd: the day of the government's new throne speech that will be about one thing and one thing only: the COVID-19 recovery. How the ruling Liberals aim to do that is the mystery. According to BNN Bloomberg there are three pillars to the government's plan: "Health care spending will be the first pillar for the economic recovery... The second will be a pledge to provide financial support to Canadians who are struggling economically due to the pandemic, with a focus on shifting people back into the workforce. Economic recovery and reconstruction efforts are the third pillar. This will include a pledge to help foster green investments, resolve major health issues such as long-term care for seniors and bolster support systems for the most vulnerable, like low-income women and minorities."
All sounds good in theory but let's see what the government actually does. They have received good marks from voters, more or less, for their COVID-19 response. I personally want them to go heavily in on fixing long-term care homes for seniors - something like 80% of Canada's COVID-19 deaths have come from seniors in these long-term care homes and the stories coming out of there are immensely sad, and not at all how a first world country should treat its elderly.
The Liberals will supposedly be able to count on the NDP, the left-wing party I mentioned earlier, to provide them with the necessary votes needed to pass some very costly bills and plans. There has even been talk that the Liberal membership are calling for a vote on making minimum basic income an official party policy. I personally don't see this happening or coming to fruition but stranger things have happened.
The wildcard in all this is the official opposition, the Conservative party, who have just elected their new leader, Erin O'Toole. O'Toole has thus far been given good marks from voters. He's a lot more charismatic than Scheer and Harper before him, is trying to open up the Conservative party tent to a wider swath of Canadians (very pro-immigration including reuniting families, wants to end the ban on blood donations from homosexual men, foreign policy-oriented, and isn't afraid of deficit-spending). O'Toole's ability as a politician is shown that he's been re-elected as the MP for the Durham riding since 2012 - which is part of the Toronto suburbs that Trudeau has built his power base around. People like him and he's said the right things thus far.
O'Toole could seriously give Trudeau a run for his money in the event that the government falls in the next few months or Trudeau himself decides to go nuclear and call an election. I highly doubt the voters actually want an election an anytime soon, but it remains a distinct possibility in the current minority government situation. And apparently, the Conservatives and NDP, have both received a shot of funding the last few months and would not be financially hurting if an election actually did occur.
I'll post tomorrow about what comes out of the throne speech.
