Cruz, cotton and Hawley are fucking insane and super politically driven. They should not be within any fucking distance to a SCOTUS seat ...

By DY_nasty Go To PostI don't see it. A few years ago Dems told us Kavanaugh was gonna legalize rape. When something actually hits the fan they're quiet or complicit.
Meanwhile Kamala has actively ruined plenty of lives with a fraction of the power. Tired of being told to panic.
Tbis said after scotus blew up voting rights and gave us citizens united lol
By Xpike Go To Posttrump will one day just say fuck it and try to declare himself supreme leader and dy will be like "but are the dems really better?"My issue here is the power of the president.
Too many things have to happen for the SC to even become a factor in whatever topic is trending.
By Fenderputty Go To PostTbis said after scotus blew up voting rights and gave us citizens united lolVoting rights getting eroded was and still is an ongoing group effort... You know this
If the SC was absolute in any regard then they'd be the center of attention day after day and not congress or the presidency.
It's hilarious that elected officials from states like Texas, Missouri and Arkansas can have a say in anything on a national level, let alone sit on the Supreme Court.
I can't even listen to Governor Hee-Haw in GA without laughing very, very hard.

Or that the SC could step in and stop it

It is hilarious when a populace is (and I say this knowing the UK suffers the same problem) so poorly educated in basic civics that popular democracy ceases to have a meaning. You're likely to end up with some kind dictatorship with our without elections.

Also agree. I think civics is poorly educated in a lot of western countries, that the difference between rural and city areas is not huge and that it is very likely this way on purpose.
By blackace Go To Postanswer is still yesBecause? If this were the 90s still I'd be with it. Now all I see is people attributing events to the supreme court as if they'll ever be in lockstep with current events again or dictate significant impact.
Whether it's forcing a buyout, moving an embassy, or enforcing unethical standards - I'm kinda gonna need something to stand out a bit. Texas gonna be Texas with or without Cruz. He just happened to win lol... There's fires all over Cali that could really use that patented inmate touch tho.
Why wait for a SC ruling and it's long road of subjective implementation when an executive order and a press conference do the job better?
By Laboured Go To PostAlso agree. People get in their echobox thanks to social media and base all their voting decisions on memes.
Just saying trying to pretend some rural area is vastly more unqualified to have representation in their country is a horrible take at best.

Shit seeing any meaningful police reform will probably need some SC juice. So yes I feel a SC seat is more important than a hypothetical flu that kills Biden

Cruz and Cotton are partisan hacks .... would be amazingly bad. Those are the dudes that stop future liberal legislation too
By Laboured Go To PostAlso agree. I think civics is poorly educated in a lot of western countries, that the difference between rural and city areas is not huge and that it is very likely this way on purpose. It's religious beliefs. That's it.
From my time as a humanitarian aid worker for the Catholic Church, I know that developing countries need faith and community to survive and to trust outsiders.
The difference is, is that a farmer taking a government handout in Iowa is not the same as a farmer in rural Zambia or on the boarder in the DRC. Those folks are guilty of no more than being dealt a bad geographical hand in life. Where as a US farmer has every opportunity to do right, but is so committed to being a cunt, he'll go out of his way to do so because those are his orders.
The GOP were smart enough to weaponize faith the same exact way religious sects were smart enough to weaponize fear.
These people live in far greater numbers outside of our cities.
By GQman2121 Go To PostIt's religious beliefs. That's it.So religious people shouldn't have representation? Just trying to get to the crux of the issue

Everyone deserves representation and is represented. I’m pretty sure you’re aware the GOP more closely aligned themselves with evangelicalism in the late 70’s and early 80’s, though.

It’s more about priorities. Trump ran on some rather populace shit including monopsony power for buying drugs and the base ate that shit up. Taxing the rich is also popular. These just aren’t priorities.
By DY_nasty Go To Postthey vote and get what they want

Do they? Abortions gone? Gays stopped getting married? I’ll give them this, they’ll happily settle for packing judges and chipping away at things
You're not gonna win that one fender when you consider how many women's clinics just plain don't exist anymore, wait times, mandatory ultrasounds. Not to mention how they've successfully divorced reproductive health from women's health so they're paying out of pocket for all kinds of shit.

“Happily settle for chipping away at things” ... they been tossing shit laws at the wall and going to scotus forever
No president or senator has ever delivered
They've done way more to hinder the ability to get abortions (especially if you're poor or in a red state) than democrats have in protecting women and assuring they get access to it.

You know where I'm at. A large amount of (or just enough), do in fact vote against their own damn survival, because of their pastors and ultra racism. This state makes zero sense.
By i can get you a toe Go To PostThey've done way more to hinder the ability to get abortions (especially if you're poor or in a red state) than democrats have in protecting women and assuring they get access to it.
Yeah but that’s part of their tactic. They’re all jerking off over Trumps judges and we got liberal going “ehh who gives a fuck”. A LOT of liberals don’t care. They didn’t in 2016 after Mcconell just fucked us out of a SCOTUS seat. He said it’s his shining achievement.
Tactics whatever. If you've been voting GOP over the last decades you've hindered the ability to procure an abortion way more than the dems have protected said right and assisted in providing access to it. If you've been voting democrat you're left wondering why you see less clinics than the damn 70s, why you see mandatory ultrasounds and fucked timelines, pharmacists refusing to give plan b and not fired, Hyde and a litany of shit like the ACA decoupling basic birth control from healthcare especially for people with cysts. The point for me was you vote religious or rich and you actually do see results. You vote democrat it's like "yeah maybe we'll stymie bullshit from the republicans but its more likely we'll just compromise shit towards rightist goals.
As a recovering former white evangelical, I'm firmly in the camp that they are so blinded by abortion and gay marriage that they haven't even thought beyond that to what their self interests actually are, and no, they're not getting what they want on either. Frankly, the GOP can't afford to give them what they want, or else at least part of the hold could be broken. The GOP is better off with a 5-4 court on abortion perpetually, and that certainly appears to be the plan, as it seems like Roberts may have replaced Kennedy as the new swing 5th on it.

Roberts Roberts cares just enough about precedent.
I'll eat my words if Roberts goes 5-4 the other way. But they've been running on Roe v. Wade for 40+ years, haven't delivered, but they damn sure get to keep putting judges at all levels who actually do deliver on what the the rich donor class wants. Abortion ain't it, it's just the damn carrot for the dipshits, without whom the GOP cannot win.
The Supreme Court matters but more needs to be made about Trump and the Federalist Society have been packing the lower courts since he came into office.
By Xpike Go To Posti think its more that most adults dont really comprehend what theyre voting for or the long term consequences of their votingWe have people on the Eastern Shore of Maryland who are literally watching their homes wash into the bay. Coffins from their graveyards are popping out of the ground because the water levels are rising so fast. These people refuse to believe in climate change and vote as their told on Sundays.
Their neighbors, who run the crabbing industry, need seasonal migrant H2B visa holders to pick crabmeat and are so shocked when there's a lack of visas available because the administration they voted for did exactly what they said they were going to do. They want the wall and to keep Mexicans out. But not their Mexicans!
I can't speak on other parts of the country, and really, I couldn't care less about those people, but the sole red district in Maryland habitually votes against themselves on major issues.

Abortion ain't it, it's just the damn carrot for the dipshits, without whom the GOP cannot win.I think this focus on Roe v Wade is missing the point. They've roadblocked and impeded for decades now. For all the incremental gains talk, this has been effective incremental conservatism when there shouldn't have been any opportunity at all.
You apply that sort of consistent focus on a few singular topics anywhere else in the country and you've got a new immigration policy, public infrastructure reform, ecological protections, accountable police unions, etc. They've attacked what should've been an absolute certainty from every angle - and they've even got the opposing party doing backflips just in case there is a small chance that some of that voting power and money swings their way for a chance. That's a fucking unfathomable dream to me.
Plus, the evangelical that matters isn't the dumbass at the trailer park or at the tailgating party - its the ones that run the megachurches, agricultural networks, and bumfuck-nowhere hospital. They're good at what they do and don't need fake barbershops to get their people on code. They're better at dictating their voting pool than anyone in tech or wall street too.
