Yes, people are idiots, and that's why phone, email, and internet scamming has worked for decades, and (I suppose) mail scamming has probably worked as long as mail has existed. But I just think that the scam would work better on Facebook, demographically speaking, so the fact that it worked relatively well on Twitter is fucking hilarious (and worrying).
Then again, bitcoin itself is a scam, so it's no wonder.

I think and interesting comparable to current times would be the twitter fights of Dinesh and Kevin Kruse. Dinesh is trying to rewrite the realignment of the south during the civil rights era. I would think he woukd more easily be able to push a false narrative if twitter existed in the 50’s

and even then, more people see twitter content through TV, articles, radio, and even word of mouth than the platform itself. you can get half a dozen takes on the same piece of information too. back in the 50s, a newspaper was the only form of solid news that people saw at all. not really a solid comp at all imo
i don't think that the people most effected by social media even realize how they've placed in an entirely different information loop either. and within that, there are tiers to it as well.
