I remember this discussion a couple years back when this dude came up with an algorithm capable of doing what it took millions in a star wars film budget to pull off.
By Perfect Blue Go To PostI’m really jelly of that new Biden proposal regarding green cities (if it ever actually happens..).Nothing to be jelly about. It’s a nice dream sure, but Americans aren’t interested in a car-less society.
biden says that shit every few months to keep well off young white city loft folks feeling good about voting dem.
i also think that people kinda forget how big the US is, and that money between states is a massive hurdle to consider as well. doesn't help that california has become a punching bag either.

I'm definitely not. It's too goddamn hot the majority of the year for walking as the primary means of transportation, and I'll be damned if I'm riding a bus.
I encourage the development of mass transit, certainly, but not for me. I have a hybrid car, and I'd be interested in a fully electric car at some point. That's as far as I can go.
I love how the people of Alabama sitting at 50 in education and 47th in healthcare can't focus on the issues, but a loss to Vandy is where they'll draw the line.

I think NYC could get car ownership down to 25-33% in the short term if things improved.
im sure americans are also not interested in everything being a couple degrees hotter but i guess cars > living conditions

Like, I'd love a city where you could literally go anywhere without going outside even once. Fuck the heat, fuck the sun. I've told people on Twitter pushing for closing down certain prominent Charlotte streets to cars that I'll be on board once they enclose the city in an climate-controlled bubble.
By DY_nasty Go To PostMove the city underground. Everybody wins.
I'm down.

By aka Espi Go To PostNothing to be jelly about. It’s a nice dream sure, but Americans aren’t interested in a car-less society. How come? It’s social conditioning and years of very specific urban planning that made America a car-centric society, who is to say the social conditioning and planning can’t go towards walkable cities in the future. Obviously this won’t happen overnight and not in every city in the country but a few seem to be going towards car-less, like SF and NYC. Urban planners and designers are all unanimous that the car-centric culture of the US and Canada was a huge mistake.

Urban planners and designers are all unanimous that the car-centric culture of the US and Canada was a huge mistake. The car was supposed to be about upward mobility and giving people the privilege of getting out of the city so they can go on roadtrips and do fun things.
But somewhere along the way America -- in the most American way possible -- turned the car into a necessity to make it into and through the city to be able to work and earn a living. It's completely backwards.
The EU and Japan has a "car culture" but their urban planning never went that far to be solely reliant on car as a means of transportation.

i mean would you vote for a man that cant beat Vandy every year?
i wouldnt
especially early 2000s Vandy
By Xpike Go To Postim sure americans are also not interested in everything being a couple degrees hotter but i guess cars > living conditionsMass transit done right would work well in American cities. However, it would not work well in many rural areas, particularly where I have spent several years living. These are places where it is a nearly half-hour drive on low-traffic 55 mph scenic highways to get to "town" where there are large and specialty stores. For majority of people in these places I have lived, it would be a 5-10 mile walk just to get to a corner store to pick up some very basic groceries. And the population density isn't there to support more grocery stores, either.
e: just looked up the place i lived at before moving to Texas: 53 people per square mile XD
The Jesus freak states just do as their pastors say anyway. It's basically carried Biden to this point.

Fuck scooters, too.
I'm sure most riders are fine, but there are more than enough dumbfucks out there trying to get killed on those things. Not paying attention to shit.

By batong_doicare Go To PostI've seen 'almost' car-less SF and its a dystopian future full of electric scooters dumped in the middle of the road.lol yo electric scooters and e-bikes SERIOUSLY need some kind of regulation. It's like the Wild Wild West on the streets when those people ride by.
Nevertheless, the pandemic is accelerating the fact that people in big cities are looking more towards micro-mobility in their cities. Over here in Toronto, I swear all bicycles under $500 are sold out everywhere for months.
Honestly the biggest issue facing NA with expanding transport is that our politics and forward planning begin and end with whatever administration or party is in power. No one cares to look 10, 20, 30+ years in the future because it's not hot and doesn't get votes. Coupled with the fact that the nature of private property and acquiring land is exceedingly expensive.

I had not even noticed I hadn't been seeing them in Charlotte until they recently resurged in the past few weeks. I totally did not miss them. God, too many fuckers on those things want to die.
