In ideal world the parents would be charged with a litany of shit. Also fuck PA for not having laws on the books about securing firearms.
Tired of that "they've been punished enough" nonsense. Either have a secured gun safe/closet or go to prison too. Fuckin in the couch gotta be kidding me.

How can you try a 13 year old as an adult? How does that make any sense?
AOC says sharp rise in NYC crime (400% increase in shootings at the start of the summer) is due to people being hungry and trying to steal bread.
......
Not even lying.

The crime is cause everyone is outside with nothing to do but beef. Most of the shootings are in Brooklyn which has the most active gangs now.
I keep saying this too, but "just stay home" really leans on peoples' mental health hard... Plenty of folks were a mess before all this started but with extra anxiety, no outlets, and too much time to stare into a mirror you're activating the worst in a lot of people all at once.
Not advocating the layout of reopenings by any means, but I wish the mental health and home life factors would've been taken more seriously from the start of all this. Violence, suicides, domestics, just plain bad decision making in general... Gonna take years to unravel all that's gone on this year.

I was just happy to still have a job. I was really having a hard time during covid lockdown but fucking hell if I was broke I would be all kinds of fucked up.

and this was May - in an area that had more than enough resources to identify not just the covid shit, but to address it properly as well. single living people in dc get found dead in their apartments all the damn time from either suicide or being unable to notify healthcare once they passed the point of no return

wp covered this from all angles months ago too.
we're gonna look back and see far more people killed or significantly harmed by symptoms of the shutdown and global recession than the disease itself - and this is not a yes/no either/or type of suggestion either. this stuff, and many other things, simply aren't a part of the ongoing dialogue and they need to be.

We've never seen numbers like this, in such a short period of time," he said. "I mean we've seen a year's worth of suicide attempts in the last four weeks.

Not really the point. It has to be everyone. Fuck even in my OSHA courses we learn safety culture starts at the top!

Maybe? This seems like a hindsight kinda thing and also a thread the needle thing. You know where the sweet spot is?
By Fenderputty Go To PostMaybe? This seems like a hindsight kinda thing and also a thread the needle thing. You know where the sweet spot is?I'm not saying that. I'm saying that the conversation should've broader from the jump. So that maybe when Congress passes something like the emergency funding, they actually consider the possibility that people may not be able to access their mental healthcare providers, find available mental healthcare, or establish the space for opt-in daily/weekly check ins or something similar. It also wasn't a hindsight thing either. Massive unemployment and crime/mental health fukkery combo walks hand in hand. Always. Everyone knows this. Throw isolation on top too? Many chose not to give a fuck.
The only consistent element that typically does that sort of thing after natural disasters, hardships, etc is local churches. But yal shit on those like their only function is to group up high risk individuals and spread infection lol. Those people work for free and cover every state's ass in more ways than one all the time. The obvious answer, like in any natural disaster, is to provide that reliable and consistent group of volunteers with adaptable direction and support necessary to fill gaps where they were expected. Fuck them too though lol
The eviction wave is starting to roll out now too after rent stacking has kicked in, moratoriums are fading out, and small landlords got told to kick rocks back in April.
I'm not even angry. I'm just kinda.... disappointed. Nothing 'surprising' occurred in any of this really.
I guess what I’m saying is, even if we considered things like mental illness etc, the equation is similar and it’s a loss vs loss comparison and what we could handle and deal with. The equation is just better. Unless you get it all right it was always going to be a hindsight issue with regards to balancing economic and pandemic losses. What we did right and wrong.
That being said, our economic responses have been shite and it’s more than just considering isolation in these packages. You bring up evictions, but that’s something that could have been preventable with a UBI with or legislated loan forgiveness during a pandemic. Who thought 2k wasn’t enough for months of rent?????
I guess I think we mostly agree lol

We didn't address it at the start and it was a top of the list concern. Can't even call that hindsight.. After a certain point, negligence because deliberateness. Especially at such a scale.
UBI was never on the table and why would it be when it goes against literally the entire country's history? Stacking rent over months without real reprieve, forgiveness, or regulated deferrals with moratoriums set to end definitively is a long winded way to say 'delayed mass evictions'. Not providing landlords with anything close to the equivalent of the PPP assistance, is essentially coordinating a nationwide property handover. Selective law enforcement practices didn't suddenly stop for all of this either. Its not a loss v loss thing.
Certain public functions simply must occur and certain considerations are always constant. Things that have been national election platforms all of a sudden went out the window like they were never anything more than bleeding heart talking points in the first place. These things were allowed to halt. They were dropped nearly everywhere simultaneously. What else could happen other than the obvious?
Every time I say people can't care about more than a few things at once, this is the kind of thing that I'm referring to. And it'd be one thing if it was people not caring - but even some of you guys here were vehemently against talking about that stuff.

UBI wasn’t likely, even in the face of a pandemic, but that’s why I included legislated loan forgiveness.
Yeah I hate Trump and I want him out so it’s only logical I vote for the guy who wore Trump’s campaign slogan on his head for the last 3.5 years.
