HoA is fine in theory because you don't want someone just piling shit up in their front lawn or attracting pests but some other pricks decided that it was all about the most subjective shit that could affect property values (and folks on power trips). So you got places where people cite lawn gnomes or the color of your window trim.

For real though, I think I've posted it before, but I had a HOA when I owned a townhouse. Of course, in that situation, they were responsible for all external upkeep of the home, and since I was also disinterested in any external customizations, I had no problem. And it's not like they could complain to me about the grass or shrubs that were under their purview.
