By Laboured Go To PostIn England a todger is literally a dick. This makes it so much better.
By diehard Go To Postwait til you find out people here commonly go by the name "Dick".
I'm convinced "dick" wasn't slang for wang until some knob named Dick was a real todger.

anybody actively learning a new language? thinking about starting a new one. it's very satisfying once you get to the point where you can understand people speaking and easily read books or articles but it's a ton of hard work getting there.
helps keep the brain active though. pondering if i should try an asian language but that seems like an near impossible task without living there or going to school for it, at least for me.

Really thinking about French.
By DiPro Go To Postanybody actively learning a new language? thinking about starting a new one. it's very satisfying once you get to the point where you can understand people speaking and easily read books or articles but it's a ton of hard work getting there.I continue to practice Chinese and Spanish, even if I get little chance to use them these days. Mandarin Chinese has quite simple grammar if you wanted an Asian language, and you don't even need to learn to write characters anymore due to phones

isn't it nearly impossible to nail pronunciation in mandarin if you don't practice with a native? i would love to speak it but it seems like a herculean task especially for someone like me who isn't really good at this.
By DiPro Go To Postisn't it nearly impossible to nail pronunciation in mandarin if you don't practice with a native? i would love to speak it but it seems like a herculean task especially for someone like me who isn't really good at this.basically any language is impossible to master if you don't practice with a native. And for simple conversations it won't really matter if your tones are way off, people will still understand "hello, my name is dipro, I am 10 years old and like cheese" or whatever
well i wasn't talking about mastering but from what i've heard is that if your pronounciation is even slightly off you now say "hello, your mother is an ugly cunt and i like milk in bags".
By DiPro Go To Postwell i wasn't talking about mastering but from what i've heard is that if your pronounciation is even slightly off you now say "hello, your mother is an ugly cunt and i like milk in bags".Maybe they'll appreciate you for being real and truthfull.
By DiPro Go To Postwell i wasn't talking about mastering but from what i've heard is that if your pronounciation is even slightly off you now say "hello, your mother is an ugly cunt and i like milk in bags".fairly unlikely unless you're constructing more complicated sentences. 马 meaning horse and 妈 meaning mother are both written ma in pinyin, but in practice no one is going to think you love your horse, and you'll mostly say 妈妈 anyway.
By DiPro Go To Posti do love my horse though. where would you recommend to start?Duolingo is probably fine for Chinese for beginners. Use memrise for memorizing characters. As far as textbooks go, I started with New Practical Chinese Reader, which was fine, though textbooks are difficult to go through if you're not in a class.
Aim to do HSK2 and HSKK1 in 6 months. You don't need to bother with HSK1, that's too easy, and even HSK2 could be passed with a month of dedicated study. I find if you don't have something concrete to work towards then you'll soon atrophy your language skills, unless you're a super gregarious type who goes around to language exchanges and talks with everyone
By DiPro Go To Postdon't do it. french is evil.I can second that.
Don't think about french or german. Horrible to learn.
thank you, i will certainly look into it. i'm still super scared and don't know if i have enough time to dedicate to this.
but it is really the only logical language to learn.

I want to be fluent in Spanish before I die. Not even close at the moment. US should have two official languages

I'm sure someone funnier than I am can come up with a comeback incorporating how there's no official language

By Laboured Go To PostThis isn't that taxing if you think about the main plot of Toy Story 1.
Not that it’s taxing, but that due to the plot of TS1, there assuredly are a bunch of toys running around thinking they’re the son of Christ lol

How many languages do you speak?
By Laboured Go To PostHow many languages do you speak?depends on what you define as speaking
i'm a (swiss-)german/french native
decent at english
good at spanish
conversational italian
conversational swahili
4 i would say.
By DY_nasty Go To Postyal keep letting dipro get away with these flex setups smhnot really a flex if 3 of the 4 languages you speak are mandatory to learn in school and it took a lot of hard work to learn a new one as an adult even though it's supposed to be an "easy" one. i enjoy i but i'm awful at it. i don't think i have enough years left to learn japanese or chinese for example.
I had a mandatory spanish class in middleschool as the last period of the day, we locked the teacher out so many times
